How to paint your Subaru badge, both the stars and the background! part 10

VTenge 07-23-2014 08:37 AM
cool, what grit sand paper did you use?
I used 600 but i would recommend 1000+, 600 was the highest in stock at my home depot.
Karb0n 07-23-2014 10:44 AM
From what ive seen of the 15 badge it looks the same with the checkered pattern and is most likely the same paint / material. Try it out and let us know!
Yea looks the same to me,I wasn't sure if it was mounted the same! I'm going to attempt to do the front and back badges soon. Ill post them when finished :D
SeanRS203 07-25-2014 09:58 AM

Don't know if someone has already asked this. But is it possible to just remove the chrome stars and leave the paint?
Wrbboost 07-25-2014 03:11 PM

I'm sure you could but it would be difficult cause the chrome is the worst part
SeanRS203 07-25-2014 04:00 PM

I want to remove the stars then put an LED light behind it so the stars will light up. If i do it I'll try to put pics up!
Wrbboost 07-25-2014 04:06 PM

yea I would just sand an outline around the stars and do a LED light cause it's gonna be hard to distribute the light evenly behind just the stars
SirRichieLee 07-25-2014 04:23 PM

I'm sure he could set it up how they do letters that are lit up on custom motorcycles
TheMackDaddy 07-25-2014 05:59 PM

Very helpful, just finished doing it to my own!

Yea the even distribution is the hard part. Idk I have replace a rear diff I found out today so this will have to go on the back burner for now sadly :/
Wrbboost 07-25-2014 11:30 PM

ummm what does that have anything to do with this thread? maybe I missed something?^
MrP206 07-26-2014 05:43 AM

He's just saying that getting that light distributed evenly is hard and he's putting the project of the badge on the back burner for now because he had to replace the rear diff.....

Tried it this weekend and it was a total failure, the Goo Gone was WAY to strong and damaged the front plastic to a point where even Sanding + PlastX could not bring it back. This, added to the fact that the chrome part was pratically impossible to remove completely, resulted in me having to make a vinyl :(
scharffs422 07-30-2014 09:40 AM

i was trying to take the rear emblem off my 15 wrx and i broke the chrome ring. do i need to order a whole new badge for way too much money or can i just order the chrome piece from somewhere?

EDIT: also does anyone know if an older model years's badges will fit the 15?
ajl6989 08-02-2014 08:02 PM

Use nail polish only, and let it soak soak soak. Now it's more of pita to repaint this than you would think. If you mess up just a little on masking the star sucks and then you gotta repeat again. :furious: Ive already had to redo it twice.

IT IS SO NOT WORTH IT TO REPAINT YOUR BADGE
Wrbboost 08-11-2014 06:29 PM

so basically you just filled up a cup or something with nail polish remover and let it sit?. did it completely take the chrome and paint off?
supremekizzle 08-11-2014 08:14 PM

I went to a sign company and just had them print me a custom graphic on vinyl that I made on the computer. Glued it right on top of the existing one. Easy peasy. And cheap too
..
Wrbboost 08-11-2014 08:20 PM

why would you glue vinyl?

Even though I said it's not worth it above. I did finish my project, it took about 4.5 hours in total to remove all the paint and repaint it. I Recommend commercial grade acetone to remove the paint. Good luck with goo gone, mineral spirits, or any other non harsh chemicals, I ended up scraping all the paint with a painters raiser till I used acetone.

But I managed to do it with the colorado colors.

so here it is

Bam! Exactly what I was thinking. And on the same car as mine too! Looks really good B4veley! How'd you distribute the light evenly?
zsturtevant 09-13-2014 10:16 AM

That looks great! I think I might try that this weekend!

Ok, so after a few hours with the heat gun and alot of peeling on that ****ty grey goo they use I've got both badges off the car, separated, and ready for sanding.

The rear badge was a real PITA because once you remove it from the car you have to separate the actual emblem from the chrome casing. Perhaps mine just had more fight in it than most,d but it took a good hour to do that part alone.

One of the more recent detailed how-to posts was for a 13 Impreza which looked to be a hatch from the images. I am working on a 2013 WRX sedan and the rear badge is definitely different than the one shown in that post. Hadn't seen anyone try it out with a GR sedan yet so I'll post a few updates along the way.

Agreed. They look like fun to make too
BoostinChick 05-12-2015 11:18 PM

I don't want to get smacked for promoting a non-vendor, so PM me if you want details. I have had these on for over 2-years now and they are quality badges.

Don't get me wrong I tried the DIY and it looked great, but on mine you could definitely see the imperfections where I missed paint in the lines. Decided to go replacement badge route instead.
evince 07-28-2015 11:45 AM

I tried my hand at the LED mod. It was tough, but I would suggest it to be tried.

Damn that LED mod is bad!!!
filterz 08-09-2015 07:53 AM

I tried all sorts of chemicals to remove the paint on my '15 badge. Not much luck. Since I wanted to keep the chrome stars, I decided to use some 250 grit sandpaper to remove the background paint. Took 3 minutes. Then I used one of those headlight restoration kits and polished it up. That took another 20, but it came out perfect.

The stars are recessed into the plastic.
