How to paint your Subaru badge, both the stars and the background! part 4

howielong 06-21-2010 12:38 AM

Gunmetal on DGM

Might redo it in DGM if I have any left after painting my trunk.

so good!
lavid2002 06-29-2010 02:56 AM

When I get my motor back in the car this is def. my next mod. The red stars on the silver back is HOWT:banana:
brianglawson 09-18-2010 05:57 PM

would an 04 Sti grill badge need to be pryed off? When I'm looking on the back, it looks like it has the Flat Screw looking thing. Would I unscrew it and it come of, or pry it? or both? would needle nose pliers work to get the flat screw out?
kenliu84 09-18-2010 06:02 PM

this mod is added to my long list of mods, thanks to everyone's awesome customizations. I plan on doing either metallic silver stars with gloss black or vice versa to go with the colors on my car
Jessekrs123 09-19-2010 07:21 PM

I am doing this on my day off on my green 93 legacy sedan. Make the background green and the stars gold to match my rims. Can't wait to see the result.
scoobysnacks420 09-19-2010 07:46 PM
For those who arent good with a paintbrush (like myself) I found it easier to use a straw and dip it in paint plugging the top of the straw with your finger, and then dripping it into a star and then tilt the badge allowing gravity to fill the stars with the paint, its fairly easy to know when to stop tilting because the paint moves kind of slow, but overall it took me about five minutes to fill in everything using this method, and then I painted the back of the badge with plastic spray paint. sorry if someone has already found this method I dunno how I came up with it...
good info, reposting:rolleyes:

This thread's been dead for a bit....
Anyone do this on a 2011 yet?

Does anyone know if the 2011 OEM badge is the same size as the 08-10 or the 05-07??

Edit on 12/5: The 2011 badges are WAY bigger than the 08-10 badges....08-10 were about 4" wide--just measured the 2011 at 5".
ryanx 11-30-2010 05:12 PM

i started doing this last night and so far it has been a disaster :(
nothing was working to take the blue paint off so i ended up wet sanding it and now its all dull and the chrome is seriously a bitch and a half
i feel like once i get all the chrome off and get it painted it will look like crap because it will be all scratched from the sandpaper and picking off the chrome
oh yeah and when i put my grill back on a couple of the clips snapped off
and when i started using the nail polish remover to take of the paint some of it got on the front and now its super hazy :(

No worries man. Front of my badge looked crappy too.
You can sand front, with fine sandpaper, until it's smooth, and than polish it using PlastiX. It will look as new.

Do not use Goo Gone to take paint off. It cracked my badge. Little bit, but noticeable if you look up close. Nail polish may be to harsh too.

I think when youre done removing paint, you could polish inside too, at least as much as you can get to. The rest should be hard to notice.
ryanx 12-01-2010 04:47 AM

thanks for the tip about polishing the front
i found that bleach kicks the **** out of the chrome
i put the badge in a small tub of bleach and the chrome literally disappeared in less than 3 minutes the only chrome left was the stuff still covered by the blue paint so i still had to scratch that off with a needle
still struggling on getting the blue paint off the outer circle(the one surrounding the chrome ring
this is a lot harder than i expected it to be but it will be worth it when its white with black stars :)
PUSHPLAY 01-10-2011 10:11 PM

can anyone tell me how to remove the rear badge on a 2011 2.5i 5dr?
spencemoonwrx 01-12-2011 04:00 PM

Is this possible to do with the trunk badge as well?
Uverjump 01-12-2011 04:10 PM

Yes it is.
jimmydshea 01-12-2011 04:20 PM

So doing this.
ryandsouza 01-12-2011 04:26 PM

How do you get the badge off on an 08+ Impreza sedan?
Teh Police 01-12-2011 09:10 PM

Does anyone in here have any spare badges? Maybe someone that upgraded to the "i" badge? I dont want an i badge because I drive a legacy and not an impreza. I tried mine but it was chipped so it cracked more and fogged up real bad. Ill be doing a couple carbon fiber badges and will make one for cheap to whoever helps me out :)

pm me if you can help.
KWIL 01-22-2011 04:56 PM

oooh oooh...am I the first 2011!?!? :p

Thought I'd also add what everything looks like when it's apart since there weren't pics to help me when I started:

The front badge is attached with 3m sticky tape. I wedged a flat head screw driver between the badge and the crome trim, heated everything with a hair drier, and pried it off. This is what it looks like underneath with crome trim and badge removed:

This is what the removed badge looks like, the only thing that held these peices together was a solid 3m tape backing:

I reapplied new tape and stuck my newly painted badge & trim back on.
After reading thread instructions, the sanding is the best way to go for anyone doing this--stay away from all of the solvents they do damage the badge.
I sanded with 320, then 600, then further restored with a paste-based polish.
donidonuts 02-27-2011 01:08 PM

but it must be too tough to sand out the chrome. if leaving the chrome, sanding does seem like the best way. might try the bleach like someone mentioned but i wouldnt be surprised if the plastic cracked with that too. must be a safer way! i hate chrome..
MO_rallywanna_b 02-27-2011 02:04 PM

I recently did this to my front badge on my 06 WRX and the easiest way I found to get all the paint off(if your re-painting the whole badge) is to use carb cleaner.

Gotta be careful with how long you keep it on there though, because it will cause the plastic to get slightly cloudy. So if you just keep rinsing it off from time to time while your trying to get the paint off, it goes fairly quick and easy. I'll post a pic here before too long.

^awesome!! good job
Builtforboost 03-25-2011 10:30 AM

I left a little chrome in the corners for accents.

I've de-chromed plastic emblems in bleach before and it really doesn't do anything to the base material. It just oxidizes the chrome into a black powder that flakes off. Chemistry is fun! :)
lino129 03-27-2011 11:24 PM

wow all of these look really nice! i cant wait to start modding my subbie!
Jovver 03-28-2011 09:06 PM

Has anyone painted just the stars/ ring and left the background the stock dark blue?
Daddy_Digital 03-29-2011 07:39 PM

great write up and i like how everyones emblems came out.
drewvdw 04-26-2011 05:04 PM

Bump for O.C.D.
RaleighRider 05-29-2011 07:35 PM

I just started this tonight. Not going well so far. I managed to get most of the paint off but I can't get it off from the sides of the stars. Goof Off also made the badge splotchy and cloudy. I'll try more later in the week to see if I can salvage it.
EvileyeZ88 05-29-2011 08:36 PM

its done.... the goof off destroys the badge plastic, you may be able to sand and buff it out. Bleach will get the chrome off.

Im wondering if a light paint thinner may be the answer to the paint removal woes.
ikandico 05-29-2011 08:49 PM

turned out nice. I like the red and black theme of your car
djinn 05-29-2011 09:19 PM

I used mineral spirits and goo gone to clean the badge.
jstepp5220 06-04-2011 11:58 PM

I can't decide what to do, pink background and black stars, black background and pink stars, or white background and pink stars. On a 06 white STI. Opinions?
rayc12 06-05-2011 11:29 AM

Can you do this mod on a 2011 WRX? How do I get the badges off?
EvileyeZ88 06-05-2011 02:08 PM

I would assume so, maybe a hair dryer and some very light prying?

Has anyone done this, but left the stock background? I just want to change the color of the stars.
islandstylez 06-05-2011 03:54 PM

Yes, you can do this mod on an '11 wrx/sti, as I have it done on my '11 wrx. To be honest, it didn't come out as well as I had hoped because he goo gone was cracking the plastic and I spent hours getting the silver out lol. However, it does look awesome from a distance haha :)
gmac612 06-05-2011 04:59 PM

wow, that looks awesome, im gonna have to try this out
mercfan33 06-06-2011 12:32 PM

awesome post very handy
TheChosen1 06-07-2011 01:55 PM

took mine out from my '11 WRX, sand already the blue part, took about 20 minutes. can't seem to decide what to do with the stars since its going to be pretty hard to take the chrome of without damaging the emblem? open to suggestions:diaf:
Teh Police 06-07-2011 07:07 PM

If anyone has any emblems they messed up, I might be able to buy them off you. Pm me.

Here are a couple of mine.

^ seems like you got this down to a science... what is your best method to take off the paint and chrome? without removing it. i was thinking brake cleaner.

im on a mission to remove all chrome from my car so this is perfect!!!
EvileyeZ88 06-09-2011 10:41 PM

Bleach takes all the chrome off
ryan d 06-09-2011 10:44 PM

use it in moderation? or does it not hurt the plastic?
EvileyeZ88 06-09-2011 10:46 PM

im pretty sure its plastic safe, but I wouldn't dunk it in a cup and leave it there
ryan d 06-09-2011 10:48 PM

haha got it. thanks. how long did the whole process take you. id like to get it done before i gotta go to work tomorrow
EvileyeZ88 06-09-2011 11:25 PM

Maybe an hour or so to completely clean it out (tooth picks and tooth brushes work wonders) You also have to factor in paint drying time you don't want to be putting on a badge with wet runny paint
ryan d 06-09-2011 11:33 PM

ok im gonna have to try this out tomorrow. I havnt checked out my badges up close yet but hopefully ill be able to do front and rear
Twrex2002 06-10-2011 11:31 AM

i tried this today.. i ended up breaking my plastic piece... i am very sad, now i need to find a replacement....
ryan d 06-10-2011 11:37 AM

anybody try this out on a 2010? the emblems will not budge off the car!
rockyraccoon 06-10-2011 12:31 PM
anybody try this out on a 2010? the emblems will not budge off the car!
Bleach should be fine for the plastic. What do you think the bleach bottle is made out of? ;)

removing the badge is different on the 2010 hatch. i dont know how to post pics otherwise i could show you what my problem is. i did remove the trunk vinyls but still couldnt get to it.

My 06 trunk badge. I am waiting on my front one to come in to finish that one. As soon as they are done I will post pics

My last badge got jacked. Here's a new one:

My first time digging out the chrome stars, it will also be my last. Way too much work. Much easier to just sand the solid back and recolor.
