I swapped my wrx trunk for an STi trunk w the STi wing on it, will my wrx tension rods support it or will i have to get new tension rods?

Finally got my bars in and did the swap.
Feels weird to have a trunk that just pops instead of catapaulting. Wish I had done it before I flung my newly wingless lid into my kayak.....and before I locked my keys in my trunk after disabling the trunk pull lever.

Another bump
Im planning on putting sound deadning material to the trunk. The tension bars dont hold the weight of the trunk with STI wing as it used to when it was new.
Anyone ever increase tension by bending the bars? I think I might have to.

Excellent thread. This really helped. I was able to swap two sets of bars in under 15 minutes.

dont know if its ever been brought up, but isnt there a way to remove the stock way to open the trunk and switch it to operate on gas hinges...like 95% of cars these days. It would just make sense...although it may be difficult to line the hinges up perfectly so the trunk closes like its supposed to
| blakkboxer | 09-25-2011 03:49 PM |
you'd have to drill a hole into the trunk for the hinge
| arco | 09-26-2011 02:58 AM |
I've been playing with this a little. Hopefully I'll be able to figure this out. My trunk tension rods weren't swapped after my third trunk swap. I got lazy. I had the STi rods in there on a wingless trunk and so eventually my mounts for the rods snapped off. Now I have to hold up my trunk by hand. :(
| mrchyes | 10-11-2011 10:50 AM |
gas things dont operate on hinges...just gotta connect them and line it up correctly...

So i took my carbon trunk off and put my sti trunk back on, damn this thread came in handy. I had no idea how those things went back on. Props for this thread.

Old thread, New bump! Reading this thread and learning the mechanics made swapping the tension rods a breeze! Thank you for posting such a well communicated, step by step process!!!

It's good to see a fresh write up on this topic. My 96 Legacy sedan had a broken torsion spring. And that made the lid quite heavy for the family to use.
I had picked up the stronger GT lid torsion springs at the junkyard. And spent some time wrestling them into the car. It worked great - kind of nice the stronger springs opened the trunk lid fully when unlatched instead of simply unlatching and opening slightly.
Unfortunately the junkyard spring broken a couple of months later. I bought new ones on-line and the installation went a lot better.
So good on you for the detailed photos and explanation - best online I've seen so far!

Hey guys! is there any physical appearance between the three torsion rods?
I've have seen few different colors on the web. mines black on psm wrx:confused:. the reason why I asked cause I upgrade to sti wing and never realized I have to changed the torsion rods. the trunk still pop open but have to open like lifting weights.

Hmmm, wonder if any schmuck like me has removed the torsion rods strictly for the weight savings? Wonder how much they weigh. 2-4 lbs is my guess.

Any one think this is my problem, I would like to know before I remove them.

+1 to OP for the post. Used it today for my '15 trunk swap. Getting tension bars out was easy, getting them in was quite a bit harder. Thanks again for the help with the write up.
