JDM Headlights vs. Morettes
1 Attachment(s)
What do you scooby experts think in regards to the JDM Headlights vs. the Morettes? Is one better for offroad than the other? Is one more durable than the other? Which is more better looking than the other?
Thanks for voting and replying,

JDM Headlights own. I think they are one of the best exterior mods you can get for your car. I love mine.

i represent morrettes, they look a lot more aggressive and totally change the look of my car.
JDM: can you say upgraded bug eyes?:D :D

morettes
I like the morettes when painted cuz it to me makes it a clean agressive look, and gets rid of the bug eyes. But i don't like the new style either, cuz i really like the morette look., i like the seperate lens.

The STi lights are MUCH better looking than the Morettes. It isn't even close, IMHO.
Both can be taken out by a stray, well-placed rock, but there have been many more reports of Morette lenses being broken than STi lenses. The buzz is that Morettes have fragile lenses.
Personally, whatever I got I would StonGuard, as I did with my Prodrive lights.
Both would be about the same offroad.

NOT! Hey pro_ra1, personally I like the appearance on the Morette because it completly get the rex alot meaner, and I did get tons of compliments from it. On the durability issue, mmm, not so sure but the quality of the headlight is quite good and is 200-300$$$ less compare to the JDM ones. I have it on my rex for 6 months now no problems at all, and the lighting is actually better compare to stock,(little whiter on the edge of the beams) Just want to let U know U won't reget havin a Morette projector on your rex....

I actually had both. I had the Morettes first then sold them to get the JDMs. The Morettes I had had fitment issues whereas the JDMs just fit perfectly. One thing I can say is that I got more compliments on the JDMs than of the Morettes...

Here is the stonegard home page:
http://www.stongard.com/sgcontent/default.asp
and the application for the WRX:
2002 Impreza Applications
I have the stonegard full kit minus the hood scoop for some reason. All of it was installed by the dealer, except the headlights. I'm happy with it. The lighting stuff says is is only rated for 60W bulbs though , so be careful. The lighting stuff also has spinderwebs in it now (looks like the lenses are cracked but it is in the gard material). I've seen it in more than one car, so I assume it's not just mine begin installed wrong by me.
I'll see if I can take a picture of it and post.
I'm torn between both. I'd probably cheap out and get morrettes I think.

Okay, the poll stands at over 70% for the JDM look. Yet the only pics on this thread w/ the exception of the one I posted are represented by the Morette Scooby Dudes. Any of you JDM owners want to post your pics as a rebuttle to the Morette group? Thanks again guys.
Oh, if you have Morettes and want to post a pic, please do so!
Still a little undecided,

If there is something that can make the GDA uglier it is the morrette headlight. If there is anything that makes it look really good it is the JDM headlight.

They don't seem to look as bad if they're painted, but I'll take JDM in a heartbeat - the Morettes just aren't for me. :D
| sweeper | 10-18-2002 09:54 PM |
jdm is cleaner looking. morettes just gets rid of the "neon looking" front. quality wise, overall-jdm, but bulbs and lens... same if not the morettes are a bit better. if i have enough doh on the side i'd buy an extra set of jdm so i'd be able to swap'em anytime.
nate, if u want to look like any other wrx sti in the future... go with jdm. but remember those people driving sti's next year would be hating on u more then those who hate morette now.;)

Aren't the STi's next year going to have the revised front end with the all-new headlights?
I don't think there's ever going to be a "US version" of the current JDM light...
Makes havin' 'em seem better and better! Darn, where did I leave that spare $800!?!? :D

JDM vs. EDM
If I do go with the JDM look, it will probably be the ones from Switzerland. Those I believe are the only ones available for LHD. Yeah, I could get the JDM ones for a few hundred less, but if I am going to spend over 500.00 for a part, it better be the right one. The only thing left to think over is what front spoiler goes with the JDM style lights........STi version 1 or 2........ah, that is another thread....

Morettes are UGLY
Maybe it's just me, but I think the Morettes are UGLY. Something about the confluence of misaligned circles staring at you in the face is unsettling. Looks like a wolf spider to me... a very unattractive wolf spider...
The JDM lights are much cleaner looking in my opinion. They do a great job in quelling the most obvious styling flaw in an otherwise amazing vehicle. With the proper modifications (like the STi lip and grill), the car looks like it should have looked from the factory.
I know I'm probably gonna get flamed from the Morette crowd, but that's ok by me. It looks like most people think the JDM's look better anyway...

Morrette RULES!!!
I mean come on, U are spending $$$ to convert your headlight into somethin that stylish and aggresive looking, right? I am not saying that the JDM ones is not nice and all...BUT for less $$$ (like 30-40% less) you can get yourself a nice set of morrette and the appearance of your wrx would totally not look like a BUGED EYE :monkey: stock. Honestly, after seeing the JDM light on the wrx, I do have to admit that is clean looking and alot better than the stock ones, but hey, if you compare the JDM ones to the morette, you will find that the morette have a huge shift in style compare to stock; and the JDM ones are still Bug-eye looking..:monkey: On the fitment issue on the morrette, I have no problem at all with mine, it fits perfectly on my wrx, and I got it from Adam at Z1auto. For less $$$, More stylish headlight, I say go with the Morrette! :)

OMG, I cant believe this thread you cant compare the two, Morrettes are riced out crap IMHO (and look at those tails just as some evidance for my case) I think the OEM lights look 10x better, the JDMs look 100x better. The biggest flaw in the morretts is that you cant add the STi grill, the single nicest style upgrade you can make to your WRX, aside from that it looks like your trying to hide what car you drive, if thats the case you should have gotten something else, bug eyes especially JDM ones rule.
| Mulder | 10-20-2002 12:36 PM |
HID Morettes here. I prefer to avoid the appearance debate, it's all a matter of personal taste. Both the Morettes and JDMs look good in their own way. I wouldn't refer to either as "rice" since both are highly functional lighting upgrades over the stock USDM lights (and of course the JDMs are an OEM part). Projector lights of any variety are a worthwhile upgrade.
I personally went with Morettes because-
- I like the appearance (again, individual taste here)
- Plug-in installation at the time, although I believe there are harnesses available now for the JDMs.
- LHD. The JDMs are RHD and I would not install RHD lights on my car as I live in a highly populated area and the RHD pattern would constantly annoy oncoming drivers. The LHD pattern is also better for proper visibility as it lights up the right side of the road and shoulder area. I know EDM lights with LHD are available but as sold through vendors here they are just waaay too expensive.

Definitely like the JDM's over the Morrettes. When i first got my car, I thot the Morrette's looked nice, but when i looked into it more, it looked funky. If that was the only options I had, I would definitely go JDM.
But I opted to go for the WRC ociari lights instead. I think those look badass!

I've heard Morettes had fitment problems early on from the bodyshop that put mine in (they did other folks' about a year ago), but that they've since been fixed.
The guy at the bodyshop (they decidedly don't like most aftermarket parts) said they were almost in disbelief at how perfectly the ones I had fit, especially after having installed the others about a year ago... so as long as you know you're getting a recently-manufactured set (I got mine from Mastro).

+1 for Morettes.
I have no idea how the Morette taillghts prove that the Morette headlights are bad (judgegavel?). I don't know anyone that has Morette headlights that likes the tails. I don't think anyone likes them.
I have to say thought, I think that the half-painted (body color) Morettes look half-ass.
JDMs are nice, but they don't really change the front end bug eye look. If the bugeyes (JDM or USDM) are so popular, why is Subaru changing the body style after only two years?
