You'll need some sewing skills to do that to an '06...since the coloured fabric wraps down onto the handle section. The bugeye in that thread is easier...all one piece, no sewing.

If you do this on the front seat's the bolsters will only last a short time . Any high traffic spot's will not hold up . I know this because I already did it to my old seat's with the same product .
| BlowDro | 09-19-2006 09:38 AM |
i have not done my front seats yet and probably will not do it.
as for the back seats holding up, high traffic areas did not hold up they way i wanted. i cannot tell if this was beacuse i did a crappy, fast job the first time or if this stuff will not work. the back seat will be out of my car for about a week now so i can get a lot of good coats on. same thing will happen with the door cards.

sorry to say its no going to work, the dye will never stick to the material especially in high traffic areas. I tried this stuff back in the 90's and ended up having to replace all the items i dyed.

i dont know if thats competly true. it has stuck to the door cars in the front very well, the backs did not see as much dye so they will be re-done. the only part of the backs that is fading is the part were the seat blet rubs rest on the seat. other than that they are still great.

Unless it is coated in something that will repel the dye, I cannot see any reason it would not be permanent unless you used a low quality dye.

im sure the factory dying process is a lot more intensive than what you can produce with a spray can; who's application is for the most part superficial only.

I just became a certified Carpet tech. and maybe I can shed some insight on this matter.
Carpet is different but not by much, its all fabric. If someone can get me the actual specs of the interior, what its made of, then we could probably come up with something that would work very well.
As of right now I can tell you its possible to dye just about any fabric premently. A lot depends on what type of fabric concerning the results you guys have had, for example wool dyes super easily as opposed to nylon. What I suggest you all do is:
Find out the type of fabric
Buy the correct dye (you know acid dye or etc.)
Clean the interior well (I'm not sure if subaru or manufactors apply protectors on to there interiors, most likely they do though, if so it might help to get that stuff off to help it dye easier)
Next apply the Dye
Let the Dye Cure
Now what will help with this discoloration thing is a protector (if it was dyed correctly then you shouldn't need it but if not this will help tons)
You might also be able to use some sort of Dye Lock but that is pushing it
Finally cleaning, fabric in general will have wear and tear and will fade over time but not as quickly as you think, especially if you put a protector on
Sorry I was bored and wanted to see how much I know off the top of my head on this subject.... -puts on flame suit-

ok to maybe save you some time and effort befor you continue look for VHT fabirc dye, its the only one that has worked for me, also dupli color is by far the worst so try to find some vht :)
| Jewrx3 | 09-20-2006 04:04 PM |
How much did it cost? and where did you get the stuff from? I definately want to do this to my 02 WRX, im kind of a newbie and didnt look at the pics too close, but will this dye work ont he carbon fiber like accents (on the seat where you sit etc?) and what type of dye would be best, i would definately dig the all black interior as opposed to the blue and black that is in there now.

So now I suppose we'll all be waiting on someone to try this product out.
I'd say if BlowDro's seats keep going the direction it sounds like they're going, then he'll have more incentive than anyone else to try it out.

Hey you guys think this stuff might work on seatbelts? Love to have blue seatbelts...kinda like how the 911s could come with yellow or red seat belts that match the car.
| BlowDro | 09-21-2006 04:33 PM |
the higher powered stuff might work but definatly not the duplicolor
| dyslexicwrx | 09-21-2006 04:42 PM |
Man that came out great.
| Samirr76 | 09-21-2006 05:16 PM |
Subaru upholsteries are all pre-treated from the factory with stain repellant, like Scotch-Guard. I would imagine this could caus ea problem with dye properly sticking.
At the factory, the seats are dyed BEFORE they apply the stain repellant.

| hellraiser | 09-23-2006 04:21 PM |
my 05 front seats are fading especially on the bottom lip near the door where rain has come in...maybe this would fix that. Where did you get it?

UPDATE: 11-9-06
well i have tried 2 products over the last couple months and they all seam to have the same problem. the black fades in high traffic areas and even a greasy hand will smudge the coloring and looks terrible. i regret doing this in the first place:mad:   so anyone who is thinking about doing this DO NOT.
just curious to see if anyone else has tried and what their results were like.

That really sucks. So now I guess your only option is to bite the bullet and bring the fabric to an interior shop and have it professionally dyed huh?
