i hate my STi seats

these seats are made for fat people. im an average size guy and i move all over the place in these. how much do these sell for? i'm thinking about selling them and getting evo recaro seats instead. i know it wouldn't match the interior but these seats are seriously suck.

my wrx seats are just fine for street. i actually like them, and im a slim fellow. i guess i need to go sit in some "real" sets, huh?

| DZnutz | 12-04-2005 07:11 PM |
i just picked up a brand new set of sti ver8 seats... im 6' and 180lbs and theyre a perfectly snug fit. i assume the JDM seats are slimmer?

boo-freakin-hoo...be happy you can even afford an sti...things could be alot worse.
(if you don't like 'em do something about it. i got a set of sparco torino's and i couldn't be happier. i'm tall, so the lower seating position was freakin' perfect for me.)

| ScoobyNubieToo! | 12-04-2005 09:09 PM |
I always felt the WRX seats were too narrow and I'm only 6'2" 200lbs.

Get harnesses!
| pdxsilverwrx | 12-04-2005 10:04 PM |
I swapped STI seats into my WRX and Love them. I do have a Sparco harness bar and two 4 point harness sets though. Well and I am a 5'10" 275 pound personal trainer so that probably helps.
| TheLegacy | 12-04-2005 10:29 PM |
I have STI seats in my rex... I was going to put in Bride Brix IIs (oh yeah, i was willing to pay the dough for em)... but I didn't want to disable the SRS (being an EMT and seeing what I see would do taht) and racing seats are very comfortable on long trips. My legacy had seats taht were replica Sparco Torinos, wow they were snug but long trips were not fun
| antny | 12-04-2005 11:43 PM |
I first put in a full STi seat swap fronts and rears at first didnt really like how the driver seat compared to my stock seats. It felt like it was a bit higher than the wrx seats. Than I came across some Sparco monzas from a guy goin back to stock in his STi and I couldnt say I have sat in a better seat. I have a sparco 3 point harness so I dont move at all when hitting the road or twisties.
| nkkilla | 12-05-2005 01:25 AM |
just put on some weight and you'll be fine.. ;)
| olappa | 12-05-2005 02:01 AM |
Another thumbs down for STi seats.
Technically they're good seats.....they are just designed for plus-sized people.
It would be very convenient if seat size were a Subaru option upon vehicle purchase.

no, i am SO kidding! unfortunately... this is how i get my kicks. i once glove slapped an ex-army-ranger-turned-fbi-swat guy out of the blue. needless to say, i was running out of the building screaming like half a second later
anyways, i figured i'd contribute to this thread a little and say that i'm 5'11 160 and the sti seats are definitely wider than they need to be, but my previous car was a sedan with a bench front seat, so anything is a world better than that.
oh yeah, and i remember this jack-in-the-box commercial where this yolked guy called up jack and the convo was like:
guy- how tall are you
jack- 6'8... without the hat
guy- oh... well... how much do you bench?

well, start eating man you got a ways to go. You could try DIYS foam inserts in between the seat cover and seat. glue them on and yer all set. kind of like making a race helmet fit with foam pads. foam rubber bolstering.

I dunno but even a Pontiac Grand Am has better seats then my 04' WRX. Shucks, it really sucks that an aftermarket seat costs so much. People like me with no money just have to live with the movement.
I have a CG-Lock and I think having a seat that holds me better would still make a worlds more difference.

I wasn't a big fan of the stock STi seats myself. I think the WRX has better bolstering (on the '04's, anyway). I got a good deal on the JDM Recaros and it's still one of my favorite mods. I'm not a tiny guy (6'2" - 200lbs) but was really surprised at how much work went into keeping myself held in place with the stock seats....once I swapped the seats out it was a night and day difference.....
| caterpill | 12-05-2005 12:11 PM |
I dunno. I'm short n' fat. 5' 9" 200lbs, and the seats don't hold me much.
Maybe the people who are saying that the seat holds well haven't really sat in anything better?
*shrug*
Get harnesses!
+1 for harness. When on the street I use the regular belt with a blue chest pad and its perfectly fine. I'm 5'5 140lbs. You can get a CG lock for the street but its a pain if you want to look behind you when you reverse. On the track or autoX i have a snap on harness that I clip into the eyehooks that are always in place. I leave the back portion of the harness bolted to the rear seat mounts and I just tuck it into the crack between the cusions as much as possible when not in use. It takes me 2 minutes to casually go from seatblet to harness and most of that time is just making sure its not twisted.

haha. guys im being flooded with pm's and requests to sell my sti seats now. i had no idea they were in such high demand. i may or may not sell the seats depending on whether i'll go with aftermarket seats or harnesses or both. if i do decide to sell them, i'll post them up on the SCIC section because i will not ship these.
harnesses seem like a pain to put on though, and i don't think it would cure my problem. plus i live in socal where cops give the evil eye to any visible modification.

Arent the 02-03 seats more tightly bolstered around the kidney area? Buy 02-03 seats and take them apart. Use the foam from them on the STi seats to bolster them more. You can have an upholsterer (i cant spell so i dont know if that is right, use hooked on phonix to figure it out) do it if you like for a great finished product. Other thing you can do is buy seat foam. Motorcycle guys do this all the time, and you can get it from a company like corbin, etc, along with a special glue epoxy stuff and sealer stuff. Shape it the way you want and coat it with the stuff which you will also use to bond the new foam to the existing foam. Let dry and reinstall the STi seat covers.Should help bring the bolstering in a bit tighter to your kidney area.

p.s. i know the interior's dirty...i took these right after a road trip. It's super clean now, though...

EVO seats are like heaven to me, i wish i could afford a nice set of recaros, because unless youve sat in nice racing seats, you probably wont know how perfect they feel.
| theicewall | 12-05-2005 08:25 PM |
Is that kosher, putting evo seats in a subaru? Granted they are nice seats, but the subaru police might ask you why your car has remnants of the dark side. perhaps the 'force' wasnt strong enough in you! j/k

i'm 6'2 210lbs. my damn knee gets sore from bracing it on the door so much  and honestly it's not the most comfy seat either. i've sat in alot of seats, sparco evo's kick ass, but not great for daily driver. the stock evo seats are perfect, as are jdm type-r's (dc2 and dc-5), plus assorted sparco and recaro's(no brides yet :o ) i'll prob get the type-r seat since i got a good connection for em :D

I guess EVO seats in a Suby is kind of against the law, haha, but they are so nice. Im 6'2, 185, and my rex seats are def kinda loose around the leg, and torso. Im just waiting for my friend to decide he wants new seats in his evo, and i will go to the dark side, hopefully cheap too.

yeah they're pretty elastic. how big of a pad? i think you'd run into problems with anything more than an inch thick.
and to get good supportive foam, you're looking at some hard to find and relatively pricey materials.

| theicewall | 12-06-2005 08:44 AM |
Like I said before, go to a motorcycle seat website like CORBIN and you can find the material and supplies that you need. Add 1.25" to each bolster by the kidney and 1.5" in the area where it meets the back portion of the seat. Seal it with the sealer that you buy from them and recover your seat. Done!

Another good OEM option is Euro WRX seats, they have the same shape but are much more narrow.

I think I paid about $800 for my Evo 8 seats. not each, but total. and that included shipping. Another $100 in various hardware to mount them in the car, and bam! Amazingly comfy seats that hold really well for about $900. And, the best part: now when my roommate and I play Gran Turismo 4, we've got real car seats to sit in (my old RS buckets).

I traded my 02 WRX for an 05 STi. One of the first things I noticed was the seat wasn't as comfortable. Parts of the seat (around the outer thigh area) are barely padded metal that digs in over time. I'm not fat and I certainly didn't gain a whole lot of weight between driving the old and new cars.
