I wasn't too impressed with the Evo's Recaros. Whatever you do, don't try the VW R32's seats, they will ruin just about everything else for you.
Another good OEM option is Euro WRX seats, they have the same shape but are much more narrow.
The R32 seats are awsome. I absolutely love them but they would look rediculous with the embroidered R32 emblem in the middle.

LOL! I guess that's true too. But man.. Driving my dad's 1997 Chevrolet Lumina Sedan is scary, and uncomfortable. The seats have no lateral support at all, talk about foam benches. Also, the steering compared to the WRX is so loose, I have a hard time keeping the car straight on the road. hahah..

STI/WRX seats should have came with bolster and lumbar adjustments. Heck, my 95 probe GT came them and I loved having that adjustment. It's kinda ****ty when you put down over $30k for a new STI and it doesn't have such things as that when I paid $3k for a 95PGT lol.

| theicewall | 12-07-2005 02:58 PM |
I have no idea what any of you are complaining about. The seats are fine and they hold you in place. Are there some better ones on the market? Sure there are... there are also better brake pads, downpipes, mufflers on the market as well. The car is a street car, and the seats hold you in place just fine. If you race your car on a track or at AutoX, get a harness. They arent that expensive, and if you get a snap-on style harness you can take it out very easily when you dont want to use it. Stop whinning... personally I dont think the Evo seats look any more supportive and I didnt feel very much of a difference when I sat in them. Might they give a little more lateral support, possibly. They sure are thinner in terms of cushion thickness though, which could make them less comfortable to sit in for a long duration.. If anyone is soooooo terribly unhappy with their seats I will gladly take them off your hands and possibly even pick them up at no cost to you... ;)
| srascal36 | 12-07-2005 03:32 PM |
Nobodys whining man but or seats definitly do lack the support and comfort that the evo has. If you sat in an evo and didnt notice a difference youre on crack man. Obviously theres better aftermarket stuff out there, but for a 30,000 dollar peformance car, you'd expect a little more support from the factory...
| JDM 3SGTE | 12-07-2005 04:24 PM |
the R32 seats are horrid. my good friend has one and it is one of the most bulky, overly padded, intrusive seats i have ever sat in. its supportive, but it feels like youre sitting in a molded marshmellow thats slowly sucking you in. my friend's MR seats on the other hand... perfection.

I don't know how big you are but the stock STi seats are huge for me, and for most smaller guys. Its a well known fact that the JDM or Euro seats for cars are always smaller and better bolstered than our USDM offerings. All manufacturers think us "fat americans" wont fit in thier small aggressive seats, so they make then bigger. Which is why some poeple just get older version JDM seats. One recent example is the RS-4; the eruo seats are possibly the sexiest stock seats ever to come in a car......in europe. Here we get another fat-man run of the mill seat.
I have first hand experiene in a real "driving" situation that the stock seats are horrible. When going up to the Dragon this past October i was tired before anyone else because i was literally holding myself up with the steering wheel the whole time, the bolsters didnt even begin to hold me. My hands and forearms were exhausted.

Exactly that. In a $34,000 sports sedan, we should have gotten much better seats. We got good brakes. We got a great tranny. We got a great engine. We got a ton of good stuff. We DID NOT get good seats. If cheaper cars can include better seats (Evo, R32 etc.) whay can't the STi have 'em?
By the way, I've driven an EVO MR quite a bit and the seats are worlds apart from ours. You spend 100% of your motions driving instead of 20% trying to stay in the seat.
What would it add to the price? $500?? Should've made it happen.

That's just silly. Ridiculous, as a matter of fact. But without getting into a matter of dollars and sents, I would like you to consider a few things:
1. Subaru would be buying these seats direct from the manufacturer and in large quantities. They'd never pay anywhere close to the price you'd pay buying them individually. simple economy of scale.
2. Dealerships are about the worst place to buy parts most of the time. They gouge the hell out of you. Recaro Speeds, which are what come stock in an Evo go for $650-1K each from any online retailer depending on upholstery material, color, etc. If your friend told you they were $3K each, he's either A) lying B) talking to an idiot at the dealership C) mistaken D) getting raped by the dealership. Since I don't know your friend, I won't presume he's a liar. But that still leave three very reasonable explanations.
3. Subaru already shells out a certain price to put seats in the car. There's probably a premium to get the blue centers and the red embroidery. Now, the cost INCREASE certainly couldn't be more than a few hundred dollars, and i'd go so far as to say that the increase would be slight if they did away with things like embroidery and fancy pants colors. And aren't the OEM STi seats manufactered by momo? You know what momo means in Italian? "We're overcharging you for this because we're Italian and we can."
Personally, I'd much rather see the STi come with solid colored seats that actually did their job than pretty blue with embroidery on a POS bench. Sure, it's pretty. But does it need to be? I mean, you put your bum on it.

I agree with what you said about the cost of the seats would be cheaper when sold in bulk or the company has a direct contract with subaru. The 3k per seat is a direct qoute he got from a Mitsu dealer. he didnt believe it either until he called for himself. But I cannot be 100% sure since I havent called a dealer myself. I thought the wrx seats bolstered fine for my body but I did get one hell of a deal on my sparco monzas and couldnt pass them up. I actually gave a friend of mine my 04 seats cuz his 03 seats were trashed. i dunno if I would have paid full price for aftermarket seats but like I said I got a hell of a deal.

The STi seat is designed by Recaro, it's on their North America website.
http://www.recaro-nao.com/INDEX_FRAMES.HTML
Just click on the link "products" (upper left hand corner)which gets you to "car seats" right below it. Then click on "OEM" a little below that, and finally click the link on the middle/right-hand side of the page to see the list.
Hard to believe, but true.

ok guys please stop pm'ing me asking me to sell my sti seats. i don't have replacements yet and won't have them until next year. when i put them up for sale it'll be in the SCIC section, i will NOT ship them.
the seats really are about the most disappointing thing on the sti from my point of view. it sucks that the all the jspec sti's get the better seats and america gets shafted with big fat movie theater seats. at this point i'm going to try out some aftermarket seats in the near future.

USDM seats designed for like 6' 1'' American's with bigish bumbs.... anytime I have fun driving, I'm sliding around in the seat. I think harnesses are a good/cheap solution to most of the prob., rather then spending big bills on new seats imo... but if you do buy seats, the s203 seats are

I think it's just that the seats suck. I like the seats in my 02. My friend's STI? The seats SUCK. I'm not a small guy (5'7", 250), the seats just don't have enough bolster, period.
I loved his V7s when he had them though.

I fit the seat fine (I'm only 6' 0", but my butt is big 'nuf), but there is no bolster to speak of, and the lumbar support is heinous. Too much, too little, can't figure out why, but it hurts.
I'd be ordering the Recaro Sports for my STI right this moment if I had a plan for how to deal with the airbag sensors. :furious:
