This will be a close rally. Since it hasn't been run in 5 years alot of the top dogs like Gronholm and Loeb haven't run it and will be using new pace notes.

Some of the younger guys like Sordo and Carlssan did the rally last year so they will have the advantage.

And we've seen what happens to Loeb when he is running new notes.

Go SWRT!

"Worst WRC thread title... EVER!"
OBShahn 03-26-2007 04:40 PM

Duval and Munchis are withdrawn.

The Companc's have been called to Miami due to the injurry of a loved one at the IRL race. Doctor's requested family so the Munchis drivers are out.

Duval sounds like they are saying they didn't feel comfortable with the lack of testing they had done. Sounds more like, First Motorsport, took on sponsors without taking and making sure the check cleared before putting them on the car and they are struggling for cash again.

And my thread title was much better and more humerous. (PS props to WM for helping rallies out in his own special way in the US!)

Interesting.

The official final entry list, http://www.rallydeportugal.pt/prog/documento.php?documento_id=34&fazer=abrir&MIT=3645
shows no fiesta cup cars or americans.

Infact, Johnston isn't listed in the official Fiest Sporting Cup event preview either.
XenoWolf 03-28-2007 05:23 PM

Ah, Johnston (Very different from Matt Johnson, easily confused on paper)! Wow did they ever butcher his name.

God, the Rally Portugal website is so agonizingly slow! Could you have, perhaps, given us a link? It looks like it's from some kind of press release rather than an official entry list, which means it's precision may have been comprimised.

Johnston was planning on running the Fiesta Sporting Trophy last season but had to back out due to money issues. He's not even registered for the championship this year. The championship has no event this weekend, yadda yadda. It looks like it's just some effed up press release information, but I'd like a link to verify for myself.

Slick33 03-29-2007 11:49 AM
As is the routine, this morning the teams were busy conducting shakedown runs ahead of the first special stage of Rally Portugal that takes place later on today. The 5.10 kilometre shakedown stage saw most competitors completing between two and four runs before heading off to the Algarve Stadium to prepare for the start of the rally proper.

In partly sunny and cloudy conditions the shakedown was compromised by the incident which saw five spectators injured when Armindo Araujo left the road. Fortunately, the injuries whilst undoubtedly very painful, were not life threatening.

Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson led the way for Subaru as they look to build on their solid pace displayed last time out in Mexico with the new WRC2007. Solberg set the pace on his third run through with a best time of 3:06.0 while on the same run Atkinson was just six-tenths adrift in the sister machine.

Rally Norway winner Mikko Hirvonen was third fastest in his BP Ford Focus ahead of Mexico winner Sebastien Loeb in the Citroen C4 who whilst happy with the initial pace, admitted that the shakedown is not often truly representative of things to come.

Daniel Carlsson was an encouraging fifth fastest in his OMV Kronos Citroen ahead of Marcus Gronholm in the second works Ford entry. Dani Sordo was next up in the second Citroen ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala in the leading Stobart Ford entry. Toni Gardemeister and Manfred Stohl rounded out the top ten.

This year's been more intereesting than last year so far.

Portugal isn't on the 2008 season. Nor is Ireland or Norge.
I'm really going to regret not going to Ireland, I guess, though the Tarmac Championship would probably be just as much fun to watch.

News !
Subaru's Chris Atkinson has retired from the second leg of the Rally de Portugal after he went off the road in SS10, the final test of the morning, the 20.89 kilometre-run through Almodovar 1.

The incident occurred just 700 metres from the start, when the Aussie missed a pace-note while negotiating a complex sequence of sixth gear corners and drove off the stage at high speed.

Atkinson and co-driver Glenn Macneall were uninjured in the incident but when their car eventually cane to rest it was too badly damaged for them to continue and the pair retired from the leg. It is not yet known if they will be able to re-start on Sunday under the SupeRally format.

Mitsubishi privateer, Toni Gardemeister has been excluded from the Rally de Portugal, the fifth round in the 2007 FIA World Rally Championship.

Gardemeister had finished leg 1 in tenth place overall, however after the stewards received a report from the FIA technical delegate stating that the Finn had arrived at time control 4A without a left rear tyre, they had no option but to disqualify him.

Under the rules, article 3.6 of the FIA WRC Sporting Regulations, it stipulates that on a road section that is a public road a competition car may only be driven on four wheels and tyres'.
