You definitely won't need a visa, and I think you can get away without a passport. Just bring a birth certificate or something more official then your drivers license. Except for the last time I've been to Mexico, thats all I've taken.
But, the hotels in Leon have been sold out for some months now. So, unless you've already got a hotel room, it might be time to start thinking about next year.

I know with trips to Baja all you need is a CA drivers license but was not sure for Leon...I guess NAFTA is good for something. I hope the same people that "booby-trap" Baja races "for excitement" don't make it to Leon. My friends brother died in one of those "traps". As far as rooms go, the area is very industrial and has many smaller towns around with rooms available...maybe not 5 star but OK.

having raced in Baja in a class 7 truck...I know those "booby traps" oh so well....if something like that happens...I would expect FIA to pull out for sure...Less suspension travel and more power to weight ratio will definately make for a dangerous trip if some idiot trys it...and knowing Mexican Police.... nothing will happen...Let hope they don't blow it...

What do they do to "booby trap" the stage?
| Scooby South | 03-09-2004 01:50 PM |
they...usually setup some type of jump or pothole ...trying to get a thrill...With that said...you can see if they prerun the stage and nothing is in the notes...then have a booby trap setup somewhere in the stage...how dangerous it could be if they don't know about it....Cruising along...and Bam...Takes tolls on Suspension componants...for sure...blown struts...Bent arms...you get the picture..

My friends brother died in a hole big enough for the front end of the car. It had been covered to look like road. :(
| skuttledude | 03-10-2004 09:18 AM |
When they run the Baja events, its always a booytrap mission. Telephone poles, huge holes, throwing rocks etc...I sure hope it will be different at this event. Could get really ugly. fingers crossed.

Since this is a "new" rally for all the drivers (no one has won this rally "X" times before) We should see a really great rally...Is it going to be broadcast anywhere?
| Foxy | 03-10-2004 12:20 PM |
I saw a show about the booby-traps. It also looked like that a lot of the locals would swarm the crash and steal all of the body parts, etc, that break off of the Baja trucks and sell em for $$. Hopefully, no booby-traps!
I am excited; I just got cable two days ago - this will be the first chance I ever get to see WRC on Speed, and not have to wait for Pou to release a video :)

They better steal quick, because there's another car coming in 2minutes! They must be ex-pit crews to work that fast. :p I wouldn't mind finding a cheap black market WRC spec ej20 for sale though :D
Maybe this is the one rally where 1st place road position is definitely not desired

isnt that why they have marshal/000/00/0 cars go through first? to make sure the stage is clear?
so sad that rally radio isnt on the air as it should have started already :(
i dunno if i should watch the splits or wait till speed shows it

Here's hoping that Mexico can put on a great rally and encourage more in the future!
First, my pics
1. Sainz
2. Solberg
3. Martin
So far it sounds like the racers are loving it. The team owners will probably start complaining after the rally about having to travel to another venue. It's a shame they can't see an increase in interest and backing for new races (which cost a ton to put on) as a sign of success.
p.s. What a LOUSY time to loose rally radio! For once I didn't have to get up at 2 am to hear it!
World Rally Champion Petter Solberg gave the new Subaru WRC2004 its best possible debut by setting the fastest stage time on the first stage of the inaugural Rally Mexico.
The Norwegian was 8.7 seconds quicker than 2002 champion Marcus Gronholm, who was second in his Peugeot 307 after SS1, just over two seconds clear of third-placed Ford Focus driver Markko Martin.
But after two of the first day's four stages, it was WRC points leader Sebastien Loeb who closed the gap to Mexican leader Solberg.
The young Frenchman, who has won both the Monte Carlo and the Swedish rallies so far this season, was fourth after one stage and 14.1 seconds behind Solberg, but fastest time on SS2 bumped him up to second, 7.1 seconds behind Solberg.
The Citroen star was encountering more loose gravel on the roads than anyone else thanks to being the first runner on to the stages, but still managed to outpace WRC returnee Harri Rovanpera in the second Peugeot on SS1. The Finn was clearly not finding much advantage from having won the event before, or his ninth place on the road.
Loeb's sterling performance pushed Gronholm and Martin back to third and fourth. Citroen driver Carlos Sainz was fifth after two stages, having leapfrogged Rovanpera. Ford's Francois Duval and Subaru's Mikko Hirvonen were seventh and eighth while Mitsubishi man Gilles Panizzi looks like he's got a tough Mexican event ahead, being 56.5 seconds off the pace in ninth.
Panizzi's team-mate Gigi Galli was 10th after SS1 but Finnish Hyundai Accent driver Jussi Valimaki took the place after stage two.
It is possible that Petter will get a larger penalty. If Loeb wins another rally, this season is going to lack the drama of the past few years. I just hope that his Citroen has some serious engine problem.

they've had the Mexico Rally plenty of times with no booby traps...the rally happens every year, with lots of international drivers, teams, etc... this is just the first year that WRC is going there. hopefully it will be like all the previous years. i think on the rally stages the organizers have much more control than out in the desert...

what happened?
edit: answered my own stupid question
"We were waiting to start the car to go into time control," Solberg explained. "The car didnt start and, unfortunately, it was uphill there, it was difficult to push and, because of a stupid rule to not have a start battery any more in Parc Ferme, its destroying a lot. First of all we pushed it to the yellow flag, and then afterwards I understand you're allowed to have help. But not so many people helped us, so we were standing for a while before anyone pushed us. I dont know whats going to happen, but our team is looking into it."

As of SS9 if Petter had not had the penalty he would be leading by 1min 39secs. It seems the new 04' has the pace to be competetive with the french teams on gravel.
And interesting point of note Marcus was complaining the 307's 4 speed gearbox is hurting his performance

It's too bad that there aren't enough stages for Petter to make up all the time because he is kicking arse. Is there any doubt who should get the inmarsat award. Proof how good Petter really is. Possibly, one of the best 1 day performance by a driver EVAR!
Oh yeah, can you say 6 for 6!

Wow. Slightly faster than an old man on bald tires. Rah rah Petter.
Sorry, Carlos gets the drive of the day award given the tire situation. That was unbelievable.
