anyone have a pic of this mod with 06 tails?
I don't think '06 tails can do this, I had those things before and wanted to do this mod, so not being able to do it only made me want to swap lights even more.

The lights from spots 2 and 5 don't really fit very well in each other's spots (the turn signal and middle tail). I shoved them in as best as I could b/c I had to get the car back together to get to work on time...
Will these lock in place like the others or will they just kinda sit there not quite in the whole way???

I did this version, but I'm not sure if it's 100% correct:
looking at the drivers taillight from the rear of the car, that the outside light is #1, the middle #2, and the round lens inner one is #3.
swap them so now left to right they are #'s 3, 1, 2.
Remove the bulb from socket 1.
I was able to do it on my '05 without any cutting, just removing the harness. It's a very close fit though.
So doing this version made the round part come on when the headlights are turned on and the outer part light up when braking.
The round part doesn't get brighter when braking, just stays the same.
Does the authentic JDM version have the round part get brighter when the brakes are on or does it just stay the same?

I just picked up a set of v8 JDM tails and they only have 4 bulbs. The middle bottom is just a sealed blank. I'm so confused...

you know, I never noticed how my rear lights lit up until my girl told me last weekend that the brake light was out. I actually like how it lights up the circle and the side.

I havent read every line of this thread, but I see some people saying the plugs wont fit if you just move them around. I just moved the plugs around and everything works perfectly, did you guys take the actuall harnes (where the car plugs into the tail light) out of its little slot? If you do that theres enough slack to put everything where it needs to be.

so this is not possible at all with 06 tail lights? I dont want to have to cut wires, should i even bother trying?
| Handsdown | 06-27-2007 02:39 AM |
it's not possible without cutting wires and it's not even a good idea, the 06 circle lights are not like the brake lights and they distribute light wrong for brake/tail use.
if you really want it, just buy some 05 lights and swap the lights and harnesses.

So when I have the taillights on just number 3 is lit up, when im braking number 1 and 3 are lit up, spot number 2 is my turn signals and I have both 4 and 5 for my reverse lights, giving me twice the amount of light going in more directions for backing up, I have tinted windows and when I used to be backing up at night I had to roll the windows down to be able to see the reverse lights, now I can leave the windows up and see everything behind me very clear!
i did it this way as well. took a little more work but it is 100% worth it ;)

I just swapped places with the circle light and the one next to it. Once I did that I then clipped the electrical contact on the bulb on the outter light so that only the circle light is lit when the parking lights/tail lights are on and when I hit the brakes the other two light up.

Do you mean moisture on the inside of the lens? If that is the case, and the lens is sealed up correctly, use a hair dryer on the outside of the taillight lens and heat it up until the moisture goes away.

Ever since doing this I have had an inconsistent problem where the the brake light only on one side seems to not always work. In my case it is the drivers side, the running light (now the circle) is fine but the outside bulb that illuminates when you hit the brakes does not always work?
I didn't lengthen the wires and the wires are definitely "strained" but if it works once why wouldn't it continue to work?
ok i did it tonight, took less than 5 minutes, as my trunk liner was already loose lol.
it is very easy without any cutting + extending wires, or swapping harnesses or removing taillights.
move the plugs like this:
say when you start out, looking at the drivers taillight from the rear of the car, that the outside light is #1, the middle #2, and the round lens inner one is #3.
swap them so now left to right they are #'s 3, 1, 2
and remove the bulb from socket 1.
everything will fit, and without stretching things!
great mod, should be a sticky!!
Went out last night and tried this myself. Everything worked for me but it was definately a 15-25 minute job for me. I did have to stretch the wires out quite a bit to make it all fit and everything back there isnt as pretty as it was before I got into it.
The hardest part for me was getting the bulb harnesses to fit in the rearranged spot (inner circle light especially). Looks great and was fairly easy.
Here is my take on this mod.
I swapped.
2 and 3, 1 stays on the outside.
Tan-White-Tan
1-3-2
2 in the circle
I wanted the center to continue to function as a break light.
The circle only lights up with the headlights/driving lights.
I tried swapping the bulb in 1 to a single filament bulb, but the 7440 bulbs wont fit in a 7443 slot.
I tried breaking the wires to make it into a single filament bulb, but that didnt work, they just stopped lighting up completely.
So here is the solution, go buy a pack of 7440 single filament bulbs. Near the end where the wires are bent over, are two ramp shaped tabs, one in each side, show in my awesome photo below, take a dremel tool and slightly grind down the tabs. Then your 7440 will fit in a 7443 (TAN) connector.
Results are shown below. In my opinion its a bad idea to not use the center section, it lights up the brightest.
To the left is the straight on, the right is turned to the side/profile, sorry i know it sucks.

USDM - Lights ON - BRAKING

As you can see, USDM and JDM are pretty much the same when it comes to what is lit and what is not. The exception is that on the JDM (lights off -brakes applied) only the inner most light is lit, as opposed to the USDM where both the inner and outter most lights are lit. The other difference, cosmetic only, is that the inner most light space is more amber colored on the JDM car.
I do not believe it possible to set up the '02-'03 USDM tails to work like the JDM tails when braking and the lights are off without some rewiring of a harnes or two. In regards to swapping the existing bulb holders into different configurations ; The bulb harness in the middle slot is configured differently than the Outter and Inner harnesses (which appear to be the same) so swaping is again limited, unless you want to rewire the harness.
Just more info, mainly because I was interested in what the JDM v. USDM differences was on my '02.

Sweet, the best mod Ive done to my car. BUT, why did you add wire? I read some peeps add wire and some don't. I for one didn't, there was plenty of wire there already!!!

Just cause the way the wire was hooked up in the light, just some extra mostly in case i need or want to hook anything else up. Like leds or something to come on with the taillights

I have a question. I just got my 05 tails today and tried setting up this mod. Everything went fine and the inside circles light up when the lights are turned on, but on one side the brake light is already lit, then lights up more as the brake is depressed. I looked and they are the exact same bulb so couldnt be dual filament? and all the wires are the same as the other side that only lights up when brake is depressed, the way it is suppose to be.. Any help here?

that's really easy to do. i just did it this weekend. simply extend the rear fog wire and splice it into one of the brake light wires (white/black). then cut the parking light wire (red) for that bulb housing (or crimp on quick disconnects like i did - this allows you to change lighting patterns easily in the future, without having to solder again). if you look at the wiring it's really simple and very easy to follow.
here's a comparison of my setup (left) vs the stock setup (right). i rather like having the inner (circle) and middle bulbs lit up for parking lights, but, as mentioned above, have the middles wired with quick disconnects so i can unplug them at will and have them look just like in that image.

I just bought an 07 sti that the previous owner swapped 2005 tail lights on it. I did the mod when I had a 05 wrx with zero problems but now on my 07 the number 2 light won't come out of the socket. It loosens when I twist it but it won't pull out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. Is there anyway to get it out without breaking it? It's making me want to bang my head against the wall :furious:
