Loeb: Marcus was untouchable

February 5th 2006, 12:45 GMT

Reigning World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb admitted that he could not compete with Marcus Gronholm on the Swedish Rally.

Loeb chased Gronholm throughout the event and had a glimmer of hope when hydraulic problems hit the leading Ford on the final morning. But the glitch was quickly rectified and Gronholm proceeded to extend his advantage from 14 seconds to 30.9 seconds over the final loop, leaving Loeb to accept second place.

"Marcus was really untouchable here," Loeb admitted. "We lost time on the first day with the penalty and since then it has been really difficult to come back.

"I tried hard, I tried everything, I tried some strange tyre choices like long studs in the front and short studs in the rear, but it was impossible.

"He was really fast and he drove a great rally, and I couldn't do anything.

"It's a good second place. I would prefer to be first for sure, but to finish second behind Marcus is not too bad."

Gronholm's second victory in a row gives him a four point lead over Loeb in the championship.

Well, I just got back. It was a good rally (not for Subaru obviously) but fun to watch nonetheless. A bit cold, though...It was nice seeing so many Subarus out there, they outnumbered any other car make this time. And it was the first time I've seen a 06-style front end...which looked good on the WRC cars, so-so on the regular ones.

The factory Subaru WRC cars were easy to hear coming...they were scraping on every low spot and jump with a very distinctive sound.

I was hoping Petter would have a good stage at the Hagfors sprint last night, but he promptly crashed into something about 30m from the start...then crept around letting the next guy pass him about half-way through. It was laughable how bad the rally went for him.

I also got to push an actual WRC car out of the snow-bank at a hairpin in the Likenas stage. I snaped some pictures of it (a Skoda I think) sliding wide into the berm...then ran out to help. It was really high-centered as it took people pushing people who were pushing the car to get it out. Anyways, I'll post some pics once I get them developed.

Todd,

Glad you are having fun out there! We are having global warming out here. All the Winter ice races have been canceled do to lack of ice! :(

If Petter Solberg didn't have bad luck he wouldn't have any luck at all. UnBFL!

ProDrive better get its s**t together quick if they want a chance at this year's Championship! :furious:
Clegg 02-06-2006 12:51 AM

Well after watching the Eurosport feed for day 3 I have come to a couple conclusions:

1. This year may be one of the best Rally years in recent history. I have never found myself sitting on the edge of my seat like this watching rally since at least 2001.

2. Mitsu has that car sorted quite well, Its a shame they dont have someone like Tommi running for them... or the fact that Mistu is technically not even in the championship this year. Maybe these last 2 rally's will get them to think about the decision a bit.

3. Subaru... ***, like monkeys f'n a football. 20 minutes behind? Then disqualified???? I wouldnt be surprised if this keeps up that Peter walks at the end of the season. Either that or Subaru dont re-sign him. Its hard to tell where Peter is screwing up the car, and where the car just is letting him down.

4. Ford... WOW. New car, and the car is unfreaking real (subaru may want to take some pointers on how to release a new car... one that works maybe?). I am saying this being a rally fan not a focus owner hehe. Back in 2003 if I heard Marcus won a rally I would be thinking the same thing I was last year about Loeb winning another rally - "Ohh.. wow thats a shocker" But this year it is nice to see Loeb need to fight.

It was very refreshing seeing the raw emotion of Carlson, the "actors" in this sport in the last 5 years have gotten duller and duller... We need people that really are emotional and pushed to the edge like Galli and Carlson were in this rally... No more of the dull as marbles Loeb going "uhhhh it was good".

Meh, I'm used to it. The French are usually very understated.

As far as Mitsubishi goes, are they registered to contend for the manufactuers championship? If so, I believe they could pull it off.

JP: Solberg does the same thing, I always laugh when they have an onboard because his mouth is usually gaping.

leaknoil 02-06-2006 06:04 AM

now that it isn't on regularly scheduled US broadcast I think its time to drop the worry about spoilers and such. Is everyone supposed to not talk about it till everyone returns email saying they downloaded the eurosport footage now ? Or do we just have to wait till the mods do ?

Maybe this is why rally will never take off in the US anyway. Most of the world seems happy to follow a WRC event day by day. Seems here in the US we want it all in 1 hour or not at all.

I agree with you on all points, but #1 in particular! Taking the factory away from Loeb made him human again (robots don't forget to secure the hood pins!) and the Focus is so good that Marcus is finally on equal footing. Some of the privateers that are now in the top 8 are way more interesting to follow than some of the factory guys were. How cool was the fight between Gali and Carlson?!

Without WRC on Speed I was forced to get bittorrent, and thank god I did! The coverage is so much better, and I can watch it the night of the rally. I'm a happy camper this year...

It's not about what WE want, it's about what advertisers think we want, and what they think that's worth. Apparently there is more of a market for lawnmower racing...

Suzuki to announce WRC plans

By Tim Redmayne February 6th 2006, 14:49 GMT

Suzuki will confirm their World Rally Championship plans later this month at the Geneva Motorshow.

The Japanese manufacturer has long been expected to step up to the full World Championship after success in the Junior World Rally championship in recent years.

An announcement is scheduled for 2pm on February 28.

"Nothing has been officially announced yet," Suzuki's David Farquhar told autosport.com. "All the speculation will be put to bed however with this announcement."

One model that could fit a Suzuki plan is their hatchback car, the SX4. Should Suzuki announce their participation in the WRC at the Geneva motorshow, it would stem the current tide of manufacturers quitting the WRC.

Mitsubishi, Skoda and Peugeot have pulled out before this season, but if Suzuki stepped up it would bring the total manufacturers competing in 2007 up to four, with Subaru, Ford and Citroen. Hyundai have also been linked with a WRC campaign in the future.

If Suzuki do enter the 2007, it would give them eight rallies to become used to the category before the new WRC becomes a winter series, with the 2007/08 season kicking off in late Summer 2007.

Anyway, I thought it was a great rally. I really like the Eurosport coverage, and the fact that it's available the same day is great too. If Subaru can just get their isht together and give Gron and Seb some competition it will be a great whole year.
Clegg 02-06-2006 02:18 PM

I actually dont even expect subaru to step up - subaru doesnt have a track record of being able to turn things around... either they start off good and hold that or they have a ****ty season. I hope for the few outings they are on that Mitsu shakes stuff up.
ozymandius 02-06-2006 05:37 PM
I hope for the few outings they are on that Mitsu shakes stuff up.
I thought Mitsu pulled out as a manufacturer this year? The two Mitsu's that were battling it out in Rally Sweden were privately run.
Clegg 02-06-2006 05:40 PM

Yep, they are but they are contesting a number of events this year, not all of them though.
DumbUglyDragon 02-07-2006 02:46 AM

You guys read the driver quotes on swrt.com ? The team is testing new and different set ups on the car every day, no wonder why they are so inconsistant through each race. Hopefully they will have everything sorted out by the time Mexico starts :(

Dr. WOT 02-07-2006 12:38 PM

Great battle btw Gali and Carlsson, shame it had to be decided by a mechanical failure. I hope there these guys have rides throughout the rest of the season.

Good to see Marcus off to such a strong start, this sets a great stage for the season as Sebastian must now play catch up. Although an 8 point deficite in rally is not the much.

Very sorry to see Petter have so many problems, they need to get some points or this season will be over before it begins.

Rally Sweeden is such a highlight of the year, there is just nothing like it.
CirrusWRX 02-07-2006 06:48 PM

This is just random speculation, but do you think Subaru might have felt like this year would be a "rebuilding" year for them? New rules, mfgr's dropping out, drivers looking for rides, etc?

Obviously, we've seen that the events have been tremendously exciting without last years works' teams, but maybe Subaru was betting it wouldn't be and decided to take this year for R&D since "it wasn't an important year" given that Pug and Cit are coming back nexy year...

I dunno, just my random thoughts. I mean, I can't understand why they weren't testing the 06 car at the end of the season last year like Ford when it was obvious Petter wasn't going to win the DC and Subaru was nowhere in the running for MC.
WagonMonster 02-07-2006 06:50 PM

Peugeot isn't coming back
Clegg 02-07-2006 08:05 PM

Atleast not next year. They have left before and come back a few years later, anything is possible.
Slick33 02-08-2006 02:20 AM

I think I remember Subaru and Petter specifically talking about their chances being pretty good this year near the end of the 05 season...it sounded like they spent a lot of time during the off-season testing. It does look like they could've used a little more time testing, unfortunately...I hope Subaru/Prodrive can get their stuff together and get in the game. Until then, go Marcus!
WRXedUSA 02-09-2006 06:21 AM

Just got back to civilization.

It was very cold at the rally -17c on Saturday morning. Good snow and ice.

What a disaster for Subaru. I was on the first stage (Fredricksburg 1+2) and Solberg was off 19sec on Groholm. Then the driveshaft, then everything else. ****s.

On the other note, Carlsson and Galli did a WONDERFUL job for Mitsubishi. There was deep sentiment on why Carlsson could not get sponsor Olsbergs to back his ride when they in turned backed Rdstrom and his Subaru and beat him by 3 places and got a podium.

What heartbreak for Ekstrm too. He drove a fine rally and simply misjudged one corner and bam! he was out.

The new SpecC GroupN Subaru's are mean machines. I will post pics soon.

Highlights?

1. Nice guy from scoobynet let me into the WRC trailer at the service park. He showed and described to me how 20 million$ in computer equipmnet keeps track of the cars and the wrc.com site updated and the Fia satisfied.

2. Vrgasen. My freind conned a stage marshall into beliving that I was from the Omaha World Herald and I was doing some media reporting on WRC, but could not get a media card. He threw us all yellow 'saftey' vests and we got to help line the cars up at the start line of the stage. It was hilarious!!!

Needless to say, I'm going to take full advantage of the vest next year!
Dr. WOT 02-09-2006 08:49 AM

Did you go snowboarding again this year? I was living vicariously through your adventures last year.
WRXedUSA 02-09-2006 12:37 PM

Yeah, I went up north and went snomobiling. It was a tough 7 days, 300km on the scooter, and 9 hours of driving in a car.

It was fun. I just got back from the shopping mall buying gifts for home. The blondes, OMG.
