^^ Good top 3, I'm ready for Marcus to make it 2 and a row. Never bet against the Scandinavians in the Sweedish Rally. I'll be on the lookout for the vids and crank up the FTP asap. I think we got the bugs worked out after the Monte, so it should be all good.
It looks from that pic that they have good snow coverage this year. It was a little depressing to see it turn into a mud and gravel event last year.

Solberg needs to go with his gut on this one, and not over-think anything.
Sometimes doing the simple thing of just relaxing and having fun makes you the fastest person out there.
Oh, and he needs to get the right tyres, because apparently he has really bad luck with tyre selection.

All I can say is I hope those files keep coming. Its the only way i can get my WRC fix.
My top 5?
1. Gronholm - I think the new focus is the car to beat this year
2. Loeb
3. Solberg
4. Stohl -what was i thinking? he wont make the top 5
5. Hirvonen
RAZOR EDIT:
Carlsson will start too. Don't see him in my top 5 though... He'll be in a "Mitsubishi Lancer WRC"

Yes, this is his home event. Don't know what car he is going to drive (I think he drove a 307 last sweden??)...but if he is a privateer I don't expect him to be in the top 5 either.

I think the stars aligned against Solberg last year when he said he was going to win ten rallies. Monte Carlo hasn't shown me that's changed.
So my CLUE guess is Solberg losing a right front wheel to a rock on the first day.
I wonder if I could sell "Anyone but Loeb" bumper stickers to Europeans the way folks bought "Anyone but Gordon" stickers around here.

Except that Loeb isn't a Grade A Jackass like Gordon.
He's just an unbeatable driver.
Do I want to see others win? yes! but I don't hate Loeb just because he's good.

I can't deny Loeb is a great driver, I just prefer my rally heros to have some specatular crashes now an then. Which is why I still like McRae and after watching some footage from the 90s Sainz.

Petter dropped another 1:54 on Stage 2....sigh, something has to be wrong with the car.
| datageek | 02-03-2006 09:29 AM |
Not such a good event for Subaru... They fixed the driveshaft problem on Petter's car only to have the gearbox now fail. It sounds like Petter managed to get the car back into service, so they should be able to fix that. Meanwhile, Chris went off the road and broke the power steering.
The 06 Impreza seems to be the most problematic car yet. They get a new car for Mexivco (Monte and Sweden are paired events) so maybe that one will manage to get through the first day.

Yes, but it lacks emotion and drama, which is a lot of what makes sports compelling to watch. "Anyone but Gordon" was as much a reaction to the fact he seemed to alway win as much as his attitude. It's the same thing with Schumaker; no one's going to deny he's fantastic, but if all he ever does is win F1's not going to be very compelling. Which is why I'm not so critical of last year's changes.

Petter Solberg excluded from Rally Sweden
Subaru World Rally Team driver Petter Solberg has been excluded from Rally Sweden after Stewards received a report from the Clerk of the Course that he was not able to start the penultimate stage of Leg 3 at the given time within the maximum 20 seconds.
Even though Solberg and co-driver Mills got out of the car to push it over the starting line for about 100 metres into the stage where the car started and continued, the Stewards considered it a violation to Art. 19.4 of the 2006 FIA General Prescriptions.
If you take the SWRT photos, then add (or subtract, I forget which) one number from the filename, you'll end up with the high-res version.
Petter Solberg disqualified from Sweden
By Tim Redmayne February 5th 2006, 16:55 GMT
Petter Solberg's disastrous Swedish Rally has taken yet another turn for the worse, with the Norwegian being disqualified from the event.
Solberg, who won the event last year, was thrown out after he was judged not to have taken the start of SS18 within the maximum allowed 20 seconds.
Solberg dropped eight minutes in SS18 after the engine stalled at the start and a problem with the starter motor meant he had trouble getting going again.
Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills got out of the car to push the car into the stage and get the car into a place where they could work on it and continue, but stewards judged that it was still a contravene of the rules.
Solberg was only 19th at the end after an incredible catalogue of disasters in the event.
The Norwegian's rear driveshaft failed during the opening stage, forcing him to drive the first two stages in two-wheel drive, losing him nearly three minutes.
Then, on a road section, the car got stuck in neutral and Solberg and Mills had to get out and work under the car to manually wedge the transmission into first gear.
By the time they had got the car back to service he was thirteen minutes late, meaning a further 2 minutes and 10 seconds of time penalties.
A new gearbox was fitted only for it to suffer an intermittent problem a day later, when Solberg chose to drive SS11 in just fourth gear.
In SS13 he lost two and a half minutes after he hit a steel post concealed in a snow bank and damaged the front-right steering arm.
This morning he spun in SS16 and stalled his engine before the eight-minute delay at the start of SS18, which led to his exclusion.
"I can't remember anything like this," Solberg said. "I think I did one or maybe two stages without any problems.
"The car stopped on the start-line because of the clutch system, and an alternator wire went off, so I couldn't start the car again."
