Looked nice and clean. I could see the simular understeer to what I was having in my vids, where you have the wheel almost locked and the car under power and its just not turning.

Click me In-car video of my best run at the SJR event at Atco Raceway a few weeks ago. A double-looping course with FTD at 44.6 s (in an SM2 Miata). My time: 47.0.
Car is my 96 LX (automatic!) with 16" WRX wheels and Hankook 215/45-16 R-S2 tires. I have D2 Racing coilovers and an adjustable Whiteline RSB set to 22 mm. And Perrin end-links all around. Camber Fr: -2.8* Rr: -2.0-ish* and Zero toe all around. Only other mod so far is a CAI. Brakes are stock and terrible, especially with my left-foot braking. Trying to get some EBC RedStuffs to fit now.

I agree with Tom. Setting up a little late (or not at all) for a few of the turns, and then turning late. Reduce understeer by setting up your turns then executing earlier. Carrying less speed into those turns will also help (go slower to go faster). Overall not too bad, but more neg camber in front might help a lot. How much camber in the rear?

Listening to the tires it sounds like you were over driving a little bit. Squeal is good as that is the sound of a street tire at the limit, squal is bad, especially when you hear it chatter.
Tom is right about both slaloms.

These guys are right on the camber.
1) Slow in fast out, look ahead, setup your turn
2) Probably 0.5s per slalom lost on entering late and too fast.
3) You aren't looking enough ahead from what part of you helmet you can see in the video
4) Get more front camber :)

My analysis: Took the first turn after the slalom too fast everytime, should've went wide then late apexed to set up for the little two cone slalom before the big 180
Too fast into the 180 and bad line. Needed to get wider and late apex the 180 cone as well.
Wider on the last turn around and slower to setup for the slalom better.
Any more opinions that I missed?

OK, turned sound off.
Late doesn't describe how late you were into a couple of sections. You didn't START turning until after the cone.
Actually, you did that everywhere. You are getting to the cone and then turning. You should be turning and already setup and commited before you get to the cone.
Probably had 2 seconds per run lost with that.

Slightly OT, what equipment is needed to mount a camera in your car, and how much would it cost?
My buddy is a wedding videographer, he has a $4000 HD camera. I wonder if he'd let me record a few auto-x runs in 720p

thanks for the feedback, yeah I really got to learn to look ahead - I think that will help me sort the line and how much speed is proper for the corner, etc... test n tune on saturday, I plan to have some more video...
corn-picker, well you need a proper mount, especially if you use such a nice camera :)
check out www.chasecam.com to see if any of those solutions would work!

When I get home tonight I will edit my videos from last Sunday and post. I am still amazed at how much I learn from watching the in car video over and over again.
A couple of weeks ago I kept having a (real) hard time with a right jog after the first slalom, you can see where I go to turn in and then have to turn back to the right.
This is only about my 10th AutoX, but I did RallyX all last year. I have learned several things and now I realize why people mod their car to be in a certain class - that is what I am going to start doing now, just exploring my options - I need to sift through the confuzledness that are the class rules and put myself somewhere nicer :p
No Suspension mods (I do have pinks waiting to go on), Turbo back (catless), intercooler hoses, bov (the only thing putting me in SM, I beleive so that is going away), BFG G-Force Sports on stock wheels, SS brake lines, AP Sg2

Not looking ahead is the root of most of your problems. Some of the runs you were late in just like Tom said, some you weren't. Car placement also seems to be an issue as well. All of the proper looking ahead and good braking and such in the world won't help if one is a full car width too far out on certain cones. I didn't listen with sound so I have no idea just how hard you might have been pushing it.

here is my incar from earlier today:
dont bash me too much for my pooooor driving in the rain - well atleast what I show in the vid is bad, the last few rain runs after the two I show in the video I clean it up A LOT.
The last run in the video is from the afternoon session, it was pretty much 100% dry out, damp in a few areas though, but the line was pretty well dried.
I have to mention that, although the last run was the fastest for me, I believe that run its possible my pressures increased and/or my tires (stock off the Evo) just over heated some from running them without a whole lot of cool down, I say this because I got some weird push in the turns 3-4-5, even though I was driving the same as last run OR even a bit more conservative, so anyway you will hear the push there - but I think it could be attributed to my tires pressure/over heated... I just didnt really expect it. But overall I am pretty happy with the run.

Here's mine from today. I was winning the class all day. Until my nemesis knocked a full second off his time on his last run and pipped me by 0.30. Drat! :furious:
Overall I was pleased with 5 of my 8 runs. I tried a few things differently throughout the day with my line, but the video shows not only my best time for the day, but also what I worked out was the best line whilst carrying as much speed as possible. My last run had real potential but I pushed too hard and coned. Brakes are still my major limitation. I hope to rectify that this week.
Please have at me and let me know where I can get more time. Thanks.

Cool!!
This is my 4th lap on course, but my 1st time EVER driving my friend's WRX (my car got a flat on the 3rd run that I plugged later). He has 10/12 coilovers and big swaybars. Almost 4deg neg camber in front and over 2 in the rear. well used azenis 215s. Turn in was fast and the rear end comes out, so you can see me almost turn into the 1st slalom cone and then remove some input, then re-apply. I know I plowed the two tight left handers. You'll see what I mean. What else? Thanks all!!!!

You were driving that thang! And as you said overdriving in a few of the big turns - I'd want tire money after watching the video and hearing the scrub! Slow in, fast out is key. I've just upgraded my brakes this week to help me avoid exactly those situations. Hard to believe you got that much scrub with that much camber. Ouch!
Other than that, it looked like you knew the course pretty well and seemed to take some nice lines, especially in the first half of the course. Some of the lines in the 2nd half looked inconsistent and braking didn't seem to be high on your priority list. Hard to say from a one run video, tho. Especially with a fisheye effect going on.

Given the amount of vibration in that first hard corner after the quick slaloms I'm going to say lower tire pressure first. Azenis shouldnt sound like that. And, fast in quick out. Look at the skid marks of the other cars to help gauge your braking points on long connected points on the course.

This run was good enough for 3rd in STS in Philly today. But really only because the guy who usually wins coned every run. I barely beat him even with his best time +1 cone! I hate 89 Civics :furious:

^ nice driving :) the car looks fun... I have to say, mmmm wide angle lenses are nice - you could use one ;)
I got one for my camcorder and it helps a lot for incar quality.
Only thing I have to say about the driving is at about 17 seconds there is that large left corner "sweeper" that leads you out of the "lot" looked like you scrubbed a bit of speed there by going in a bit hot and oversteering it looked, but thats all I observed.

have a wide angle on it...just zoomed in a bit...like 2x...
the course is a state trooper training ground..so what you observed was the SLICK Concrete Skidpad...There is absolutely NO traction at all out there...so you just had to get the car to rotate...
The car went FTD 1 & 2 by over 2 seconds..and there is some decent drivers in our club..
thanks for the feedback, yeah I really got to learn to look ahead - I think that will help me sort the line and how much speed is proper for the corner, etc... test n tune on saturday, I plan to have some more video...
corn-picker, well you need a proper mount, especially if you use such a nice camera :)
check out www.chasecam.com to see if any of those solutions would work!
Andrew,
2 of the guys I race with in STU used camber bolts infront to get more camber. I know it isn't the best way but we got 2.1 neg out of them and it helped drasticly until they can save up for plates.

^ I just got noltec (street) plates for the front, they are on and aligned... set at -1.3 camber and 5.0 caster...
I plan to swith the plates and get them to the orientation that favors camber, until then I think this will feel pretty good - the caster is nice.
I hope to get it around -3.0 ish

Bill great run today. I could tell when I was corner marshalling that you were one of the few guys left foot braking. Really gets you a launch on corner exit. Those new meats were very sticky too, looked like you wanted to do some 2 wheel in the air driving in that last 90 deg turn. On a side note, my last run was smooth and SMOKING, until I turned in early for the last 90 deg turn and drove off course.
Just for reference for my STU times were in the 54 range with 54 flat being best. Would have broke into 53's on the last but that gives you a reference to how F(*& fast Bill was today.

You may not need that much, get a pyrometer and take front tire temps across the tire right after the run, that will give you a good idea if you need that much neg camber.

Wow. You sure did slip the old clutch on the lauch. Looks pretty good. Maybe overshot that last right hander before those quick slalom towards the end. Good drift control
BTW what is everyone using for STi DCCD settings? I'm half tempted to go with Burkharts setup with full rear and 49psi rear.

You had to late apex that turn, it's off camber and narrower on exit. I worked that corner and he was the fastest guy through there all day. If you turn in any sooner you will dump it off the outside of the turn as I did on my last run tinking you could turn in a little sooner.

The first run of the day for me was my fastest... hrmmm (38.3) of course the camera was zoomed in for it by accident, anyway the 2nd run on the video is decent, I really feel like my steering inputs were particulary sloppy today (well, its always...)

Those last few corners on the 2nd run could have used less brake, more right foot.
Tires sounded good, car didnt seem to push much.
You guys make some confusing courses!

Mine from Saturday at NNJR. Overall I didn't have a great day. Finally on my 6th run I put it all together. Then screwed up after the finish and got a DNF for the run. :furious:
Regardless, it was my best run for the day mechanically, so take a look.

Thanks for the feedback, I dont think I drove too well that day, I know there was a lot of ways to improve it... although my best excuse is it was my first event on my new AD07's so I wasnt used to them... but anyway I still gotta learn to LOOK AHEAD!!!!!!!

hey, here is my latest incar
http://media.putfile.com/andrewincar6-11-06
--- Just wanna mention, this is my first run, I didnt manage to get the camera in for my better runs (well I did for a 33.9 but the seat was up and blocked the view) then my best run I was behind in getting in the car so I didnt have time to set it...
Anyway the first run is very unsure and whatnot - I still gotta get used the the way the car acts with the new alignment (more neg camber up front now = much more front grip than I was used to).
I like the new (slighly new..) view - I think it ought to be zoomed in just a bit more to get less of the cabin and more out of the car.
My fastest run (wish I got it taped... damnit) was a 33.3 thats a bit over a second faster than the taped run, got 1st in STU and 2nd in PAX for the day.

I was thinking that as well, but he did lower the time from that run by over 1 second. Bet a good chunk of that came from the slalom. Either way, for his first time run around that course, that was sweet! :)

Nice run. You really kept the momentum going in some of those tight hairpins/ corners. Was it a 1st gear course or did you shift up to second? What class do you compete in with your impreza? GS? I imagine you're on r-comps?
