Lowering My Stock Seat part 2

MattDell 06-30-2005 11:29 AM

So after two months, no one's come up with anything? :(
Keshav 06-30-2005 08:39 PM

I'm in the "JDM seat in GC" boat and this crink in my neck is only getting worse.
nate.the.great 08-01-2005 04:03 PM

I hear the V7 seat is quite low.

I created a Seat FAQ here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=816110

Corbeau FX1 Pro + Bracket Review here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=816117

good info NATE
thanks
nate.the.great 08-10-2005 12:11 PM

No problem. My corbeau saga is ending. I asked them for a replacement if they could send me a proper product, and a refund if the poor products I received were indicative of their overall quality. They chose to give me a refund. I will just have to cover the cost of shipping the seat back.

Its also making this cracking sound every time I make a hard turn.
hauvis 08-18-2005 06:32 PM
I replaced my STi seats with aftermarket sport seats. Its about the only way to get any lower. I will go look at my drivers seat, since its in my basement, and I will confirm this. HKS Kanjai make a bracket, but they will not guarantee (speeling) if they fit the USDM seats. Kind of a risky purchase in my eyes.
I just picked up a 03 wrx driver seat for my 05 STI. The 03 seats are more of a bucket style and also sit a good 2 inches lower than 05 STI seats!!! I know my bro has an 03 rex! STI seats look cool but they just plain suck. Why would you make a race car with crappy side bolsters and high center of gravity?

BTW im 6-3 215lb
hauvis 08-18-2005 06:47 PM
this cars only fault to me is the height of the seat. with a helmet i hit the ceiling. i have heard of a guy 6' 6" that had a bracket custom made to lower the seat a couple of inches. that is what i am setting out to do, anybody know anybody that has done this or can do this??????
i like the stock seats and the airbag....so i desire to keep the stock seats
thanks
Im not sure if that air bag is even a good idea for bigger people. In my 05 sti the air bag would basically be hitting me in my shoulder or arm not protecting my head at all. Without proper testing we'll never know just a thought I had.

My thoughts exactly. I have always been scared of side air bags.
jr4jc 09-09-2005 10:44 AM

ok i bit the bullet and bought the corbeau TRS wide seat w the lumbar support and put it in last night. well i should say i put in three bolts in last night. i will have to take it out and file one hole out which really is a pain after getting it all the way in there.
ALSO for those of us that are tall i bought this from the factory and they said they could 'shave it', they shave 1/2" off the bottom of the seat cushion also the head rest does not go over my head it hits about 3/4 the way to the top of my head, but is comfortable.
ALSO with the wide seat the seat belt female part is way down hard to get a hold of, and is tight to the console, i will try to change that to a longer female part when i take the seat out to file the hole bigger,
the HOLE problem- unless i am mistaken the problem is going to be common to all who put this seat bracket in an sti, and maybe wrx's too. the rear inside hole does not go far enough to the back of the car, so if any wanted they may want to file that prior to putting it in the car. it is the lowest spot in the slot and needs filed a little towards the rear of the car.
i just drove around the block but it is a totally different feel in the car, i am sitting in it not on it, the lumbar support is simple but feels pretty good. material feels a little cheaper than the stock seat but comfortable.
will try to attach pics, if not able too, it lowers me a good 2-3" enough for a better feel and i can put the helmet on and not bump the roof which was my ultimate goal, now i can drive with a helmet without slouching down in an odd position!!!
jr4jc 09-09-2005 10:46 AM

pics
before can barely get 2 fingers above my head, after i can't get my thumb but do get all 4 fingers with just a little bit more space, 2.5-3" i think

Im 6 2 1/2" 215lbs with an 05 STI. My Bro has a 03 wrx and ever since I got my 05 STI I noticed how much lower and better fitting his seats were when compared to my STI seats. When I have a helmet on in my STI if I sit up super sraight I can easily pin my head to the roof, not a good feeling. So last week I finally bit the bullet and picked up an 03 WRX seat for my STI.

The 03 WRX seat is more of a "bucket" which lowers you significantly. I now fit much better in my STI. I can also see through my STI wing much better now.

Do you know if the difference is in the seat rails or in the seat itself?
hauvis 09-09-2005 03:14 PM
Do you know if the difference is in the seat rails or in the seat itself?
I'd say it was the seat not the rails. Your tail bone ends up going lower in the seat.
jr4jc 09-15-2005 06:49 PM

update on the trs corbeau seat, did not have to take it out to get that 4th bolt to thread, i have a bigger than me freind that is a mechanic, i got in the seat facing backwards and kneed the inside corner down and back and he pushed hard but finally got the bolt threaded and the seat is in, i am amazed what a couple of inches does to your perspective when driving, i am loving it, and have to get used to it, can't wait to see what the track will be like---driving without having to scoot down in the seat so the helmet doesn't hit the roof. ;)
PLUS i no longer have a huge blind spot due to the rear view mirror, i can see under it.
there is a little flex in the seat when you hit the gas, but not bad, and again i got the wide seat and it barely fits in but does, i would HIGHLY reccomend getting a longer female seat belt receiver before you take the old seat out. that is driving me nuts, probably will pull the seat out to change it!!!
for the money i am loving this seat, got the lumbar support that looks chincy but works great, is very comfortable and supportive!!!
DILLIGAF Racing 09-15-2005 09:01 PM

you'll get used to the seat belt. I have the same seat in the same color STi, and I got used to it.
jr4jc 09-20-2005 11:12 AM

dilligaf - did you get the wide seat or the regular trs corbeau seat.
this wide is a perfect fit for me, and i had it shaved an extra 1/2" which is not noticeable, it is very comfortable, now can i complain that it is to low and harder to get in and out of----naaa i won't go there i am LOVING it!!!!! i need the ab's excercise.
DILLIGAF Racing 09-20-2005 03:53 PM

yeah, I have the wide version. I never thought of shaving it, but mine got screwed up on the one side bolster. I talked with Corbeau, they were all ready to replace it, until they gave me to the Customer Rep. from Hell, and he was not too keen on the idea. So I will never buy Corbeau again. I'm a big guy, and I think this is a perfect seat. Better bolstering than the stock seat, and I sit lower/further from the wheel. I do have problems getting out of the car now (my B-pillar trim can confirm this).
nate.the.great 09-20-2005 04:36 PM

lol, roger that. i'm in the "never buy from Corbeau again" camp as well. there are quite a few members who were not pleased with their service.
Tada 09-21-2005 02:34 AM

Haha... I'm 5'8" on a good day... I bet i'm the only one in here that uses the handle on the side of the seat to make it a little bit taller
jr4jc 09-21-2005 10:59 AM

what handle on the side of the seat, you mean the stock seat goes up and down??!!
eltrouble 09-21-2005 05:41 PM
what handle on the side of the seat, you mean the stock seat goes up and down??!!
of course it does, i don't understand why people don't know this.
of course it does, i don't understand why people don't know this.
even with the handle on an STi, its not enough
JackClark 09-21-2005 07:21 PM

I'm 6'7", 240lbs, and with my stock STi seat in its lowest position and with a mad lean, my hair still grazes the ceiling of my car. Oh, what I wouldn't give to drop my stock seats, even if it's just the driver's seat, an inch or two.

If you build it, I will buy.
Lip Skid 09-22-2005 09:18 AM

I just replaced my '02 WRX seats with '04 STi seats. I pulled a bolt head through the left slider and a spring broke in the seat back.

There is a huge difference. I now sit on the seat instead of in it. Hard cornering now has me using my elbows and knees to keep me in position. With the WRX seats, I couldn't see any of the hood. With the STi seats, I can see a good two inches of hood. The steering wheel is now too low and I'm sitting too high. It feels like I'm driving my Mom's Forester XT (aka tractor style).

I looked to see if it was possible use the WRX bracket on the STi seat. I compared the seat brackets and there isn't that much difference in height. Maybe a half inch. The brackets are different and not interchangeable.

On the WRX drivers seat, the left-side, rear bracket, has a hole in it which slides over a stud on the seat base and is held in-place with a nut.

On the STi seat, the same left-side, rear bracket, has a nut welded on the bracket and a huge bolt (with a torx-like socket-head) screws through the seat base into the bracket.

To me, it doesn't seem possible to use the WRX bracket on the STi seat. If you were to get it to work, the height difference would be minimal.

Like another post'er said, I believe the height difference is in the actual seat and not the bracket.

for bugeye seats. ;)
jr4jc 09-23-2005 12:29 PM

i love the 2005 sti seats look and feel [although at my size i was sitting ON the bolsters] but gave up on lowering them and bought the TRS corbeau seat, in the wide format with the lumbar support, and am very pleased, it sits VERY low compared to stock. it is a little cheaper made and a little cheaper price than most, if an when it wears out i will probably go with a sparco or recaro, but i am thrilled to sit IN a seat and see under the rearview mirror, and not hit my helmet on the ceiling. it was a little awkard to get in, material is very comfortable to sit on. my biggest complaints are as stated earlier,
with the wide seat i would opt for a longer female seat reciever, and the last bolt was a bugger to get lined up and in. i did not need to file but some have said that they did ahve to. and i hate to say it but lower like it is it is a little harder to get in and out of the car, but hey i need the abs workout anyway.
EssTeeEye06 11-05-2005 03:46 PM

Anybody else tried 03 WRX seats in the STi like Hauvis? What were your results? And does the 03 airbag work in the 06 STi?
Shavenyak 11-05-2005 03:57 PM

I've been uncomfortable for a while (I'm 6'8" and 260lbs), so I think I'm going to go with either the Cobra Suzuka GT or Sparco Evo XL to give me more head room (but still fit my butt). As you can see, I'm a little stuffed:

Portly 11-05-2005 04:41 PM
Wow I'm not the only giant on this site. 6'9" here.
6'10" - Got yah beat. About 215 lbs, too, so I'm anything but Portly....

I've got a set of V6 seats in my "GC" wagon now. With a friend's help, we modded the metal seat base w/o chopping up anything else. Got me down where I needed to be, though it's at most an inch lower than before. Doubt I could wear a helmet comfortably.

Next part of the project is figuring out how to raise the height of the seatback in relation to the seat base. For those of you who've sat in V6 seats, you know that they are exTREMELY supportive, which can be a problem if the support is in places that are designed for very short people...

If I want the seat any lower, it looks pretty simple to just cut off the rear mounting tabs on the bottom of the rails and weld them on "higher", thus pushing the seat lower.

jr4jc 11-17-2005 08:56 AM

scobby ru let us know if you get either of those seats and what you think. i thought hard about the evo's and kind of wish i had gotten them, but htere were none around to sit in and feel the seat and the height change and sparco told me it would not change the height much, but i think they were giving me a pat answer so as not to be in trouble with airbags/height change/safety type stuff
DILLIGAF Racing 11-17-2005 09:00 AM

yes they were. Aftermarket seats will make a huge difference in your seating position.
fourdegrees 07-16-2006 08:38 PM

Bringing this back from the dead. Anyone else have pictures of WRX seats in STi? I'm considering going with 2002 / 2003 seats in mine. I'm definately not enjoying the driving position offered by the STi seats.

i guess im the only one that tried stretching the seat bottom springs to drop the bottom cushion? I used channel-lock pliers and slightly pulled, pryed, and stretched the 3? springs underneath the seat and gained about 0.5" of headroom.
I also added foam bolsters on the sides by your ribs. You can slightly see the bulges in the pic above

regardless of the thread title, i answered the question you posted. there is no good way to lower the stock seat. the only way is to get an aftermarket seat.
jr4jc 07-28-2006 10:20 PM

i got corbeaus trs seats and they fell apart, they did honor the warranttee but i had to pay shipping, i decided to go with a fixed back racing seat intead and swap the stock out from time to time, they sent me a wide fixed back racing seat--forza 2 it fits in the same brackets as the trs as long as i don't want to put it in the car, anyway sent that seat back and got a full refund and then bought a roll bar from auto power and scroth quick fit harness, with the harness i do not hit my helmet on the ceilng and my back is not in an aweful position. i still would love to lower this stock seat an 1 or 2.
GTScoob 07-31-2006 12:29 AM

I switched my 02 seats for 04 WRX seats and got the same result, it seems a little higher but its liveable.
fourdegrees 08-11-2006 05:01 PM

Well, I bit the bullet and replaced my seats with those from an 02 WRX. I sit much lower now, and find the bolstering to be much more supportive, but yet more comfortable due to softer foam used. Unfortunately, the drivers seat has a weird "hole" near my tailbone, where there doesnt seem to be enough cushioning. Anyone experience that at all?
wrx-boy 03-13-2007 05:39 PM

Back from the dead!! Anyone come up with anything yet to lower the stock us seats? I've been trying to get in touch with Myles from RaceComp to no avail. yet.

I'm in the need to lower boat and am doing a ton of research too. HKS Kansai seem to be the best option but need modification to work.
kgb 11-05-2007 01:57 PM

There must something out there for GC owners with newer STi seats like me.... I knew of at least one car with a lowered bracket and a set 04 WRX seats
jr4jc 11-05-2007 08:06 PM

i got sparco evo xl and evo 2 plus
i love the head room, the evo 2 plus was too narrow
the XL is perfect but if my inseam was longer than 32" i'd be in trouble, it hits the b pillar.
VERY comfortable seat.
PS_REX 11-05-2007 11:53 PM

This is one of the very FEW reasons I'm glad for my 5'8" stature....still looking for reason #2.
kgb 11-06-2007 01:26 AM

Nothing from RCE? or anybody for that matter?
PaulWalkerJr 11-06-2007 05:18 PM

I found these rails for the Evo but I dont see a WRX application listed on the site. You might want to try giving them a call and see if they have something for a Suby!

Dforce 11-06-2007 11:38 PM

something something about it not working with the usdm seats.
sperry7 11-06-2007 11:42 PM

Definitely does not work with the US seats. Those are bottom mount brackets and the stock seats do not have bottom mount holes. They are on the side. If you have EVO recaro's or other Recaro seat yes they would work.
Darryn 11-07-2007 01:20 AM

Nevermind, I got more info, and the idea I had doesn't work, seems HKS may be the only option
Big-Sexy907 10-13-2008 04:12 PM

Back from the dead... I wanna lower my STi driver seat.
GTScoob 10-14-2008 12:34 AM

Well I've heard that swapping WRX seats into older GC cars raises the seat height and that the WRX padding can be swapped onto GC rails for use in an older car. I'm going to try to do this to some older GC rails and my 02 WRX front seat. It's been something I've been planning for months but havent gotten around to it yet, when its done I'll post up here.

kgb 04-05-2009 09:48 PM

Dead thread bump - I wonder if the rails are different between 02 and 04. Mine are JDM Ver8 so they are equivalent to 04, and I didn't want the Ver7 because it's too tight on the shoulder. I have sat in a Ver7 in a GC before but I already forgot if they are lower than Ver8 in a GC
civic_82 04-05-2009 10:06 PM

i wanna go lower :)
04slprwgn 06-03-2009 11:16 AM

ok i have been looking into this also....

i have heard that the rails from the older impreza's like 01 and older will swap onto the newer seats and will sit lower... have not had a chance to verify but i have heard this...

my second venture was i talked to wedge engineering... the sales guy there said they didnt have anythign but if you take your sliders off and give them the measurments they ask for on their website he could see if our stock seats will match up to an aftermarket rail and they would drill them for it... i live in georgia and if itt would work it was only gonna cost 250 shipped so its not a bad thing to look into
