Wow, 17 cars finished, 18 didn't. That's quite a bit of attrition probably due to the slick clay roads and the rain. Car 614 Wiktroczyk / McAllister ended up on their side, dumped power steering fluid on the turbo, and this was the result (they were both out of the car and just fine, thankfully).

Stage 7 was wicked! I saw car 774 roll no more than 15 yards directly in front of me! It was very intense to say the least! At least no one was hurt. :disco:
| dch | 06-06-2004 05:38 PM |
Rolling the car is preferrable (usually) to hitting something, as there's more chance to dissipate energy in a roll thereby causing less stress on the occupants. The results may look worse with all the sheet metal damage as opposed to taking say a stump in the right-front corner, but that sudden deceleration is what gives you the stiff neck or possibly worse. Plus it's quite a ride! Strange things go through your mind as you finally give in and admit to yourself that you're not going to be able to keep the car on its wheels no matter what you do. Standing in the woods for two hours afterwards is actually the worst part of the whole ordeal. Well, maybe second worst when compared with writing the check to the body shop. :D

See Petes pictures of Brad Hawkins car for a good comparision. I'd rather have the roll for both body damage and occupant safety.

Thirds on that. Having rolled three times (the third being STPR this weekend), I can say that even our wicked bad 60+ mph 4x cartwheel/roll wasn't as bad as a 10 mph nose-dive into a ditch, which left me with more bruises and soreness.
The rolls, in general, were very similar to many amusement park rides...As far as damage, a slow roll is pretty easy on the car, though a bad roll can total a car by basically spreading out the impact to every side of the car.

Doug actually for some reason a fire started in the rear of the car as well as the engine compartment. Fire System failed! 4 extinguishers later no luck. THat car was well built as well, it is the car that PEter Workum used to own, Pectel, Premier fuel cell, all the right pieces including a blow off valve that I had lent them for the event! I have a feeling that I will not be getting it back.

9iron, got any shots of that? We found someone who has a video of it and I'm sure it will be posted later. Otis and Peter were fine, and as you saw they got going again really quickly. Unfortunately the cage was damaged enough that it wasn't safe to continue.
I was talking to Peter about it and he agrees that the rolls are better than the head on collisions. After 2 rolls, one far worse than this one, and 1 head-on impact I can say that he was visibly more shaken by the head-on. Otis, well, he's not affected by anything... ever!
Does anyone have any pictures or vids of our car?
Thanks,
Alex

Front and rear at the same time? Hmmm... That's a little odd. You could probably have your BOV back Jeff, but it might be just a little crispy and/or look like a small blob of aluminum. :)
Cheers,

The SRT's have always been quick. The Chrysler 2.4 is a fairly stout engine. G5 champs the past what? 2 years? As OT would say, they are teh fastAr...
Having Choiniere behind the wheel doesn't hurt either (this was his first 2WD event in quite a while, IIRC.)
