The Ultimate Shift Knobs

Time to restart this thread
Ive been working with my grandfather over the past few months, learning how to use a machining lathe from the 1950's. He lived a lifetime as a tool and die worker and machinist. He's been teaching me the various skills, and now I apprentice for him on my spare time. Lately I've been making some shift knobs on my own for friends and myself, trying to design the Ultimate Perfect shift knob!
To start out, I managed to source some pieces of aluminum rod, alloys 2011, and 6012-I (thanks RallySquirrel) which I have been working with. Lately, I picked up severl dozen feet of 6061-T651 Aluminum.
Clint & Tony from TurnInConcepts (being the awesome guys they are) are now working with me as my official and ONLY distributor of these.
Note: I am not selling these on my own. I am not a vendor. This is only a showcase for my pride in my work. TiC is the only source for them because they are a registered NASIOC vendor (and the best one, in my opinion)

STi 6-speed Shift Knobs
Fifth:STi 6-speed Piston Style
I just completed the first aluminum STi 6-speed shift knob which will screw directly onto the shift lever in place of the stock piece. It has a recess in the underside which is wide and deep enough to allow the reverse lockout ring to slide up into it (same dimensions as stock). It is internally threaded 1" deep with the STi's 12x1.25 tap.
Dimensions:
Height: 2.0"
Diameter: 1.5" on top, 1.2" on bottom
Weight: Approx same as stock, will take gram measurement tomorrow.
I test-drove it on my WRX for a couple minutes and it feels just right. Not balky, not too light, good size, easy to grip, good weight. I can make a different design, but I felt like doing this for the 1st ever Piston knob for the STi

cool
i think the old lathe in my shop is about the same age. LOL
you might want to put something on the knob to keep it from oxidizing.

thanks for the comments,
i was thinking of doing a black anodized finish, but itll cost around $100 for a single part. so maybe not.

Looks similar to my one of a kind knob I made a year ago (I've since made one other for a friend). The lathe at my shop is a tad newer though. 1970ish. Wish we had a CNC lathe. I start mass producing them.

all i bought was the bit which has the 12x1.25 thread pattern so it screws right onto the shifter column on the 04 WRX.
i dont really know if ill make anymore, cause the aluminum was just leftover from other stuff.

As far anodizing, don't bother unless you want to pay for a mil-spec level of anodizing. the black will turn a funny brown in the sunlight in about two months, and be mother hot.
clear will actually disappear in about a year, although anodized to the WRCBlue would be cool, I dont remember how long that would last, just that it would be in-freaking-credible for price.
stick to the Mothers aluminum polish.

Man if you left your car in the sun for just an hour in Phoenix and tried to grab your knob you would feel the lovley sensation of an unholly hellfire that would recreate the scene from Home Alone when that guy burns his hand on front door knob!!
Then you would be jumping around like such
Not that ive ever done that or anything :D You learn real quick where all the chrome pieces are inside of your car.

Maybe it would be cool if you dipped it in like a rubber dip... I forget what it is called... Would probably add some grip, and give it a different look.... Maybe I'm just stupid but I think that would look cool. I'm gonna go buy a ghetto knob and dip it.

I gotta stick to ebay :(

I have got to say, you are very talented. I would like to have a custom shift knob made when you are ready to start making them. I will be able to provide you with a complete mechanical detail drawing and a 3d rendered view of the completed shift knob. I would be willing to pay you a decent amount of money for the shift knob. What I am going after would be very simple and nowhere near as complicated as the designs you have come up with so far. Let me know when your shop is opened.
BTW, saw your shift knob on ebay and almost bid on it, but i figured i would get around to asking about a custom job instead of having 2 piston knobs.
