I have got to say, you are very talented. I would like to have a custom shift knob made when you are ready to start making them. I will be able to provide you with a complete mechanical detail drawing and a 3d rendered view of the completed shift knob. I would be willing to pay you a decent amount of money for the shift knob. What I am going after would be very simple and nowhere near as complicated as the designs you have come up with so far. Let me know when your shop is opened.
BTW, saw your shift knob on ebay and almost bid on it, but i figured i would get around to asking about a custom job instead of having 2 piston knobs.
Nice job WRXdriftR.
As a Journeyman machinist of over 21 years and the GM of a machine shop may I offer a bit of advice for the "plastic" knobs. Use a Keensert of Helicoil (or other screw thread insert)for the threads. I'm sure your Grandad knows what these are, if not , just google them. Your threads will NOT be strong enough without them. I personally would go with the Keensert (heavy duty, locking). They cost about $5.00ea and you have to put a different thread in that the one for the shifter. So if the shifter is say an M10 thread you would probably (depending on the Keensert) drill and tap for an M12 or M15 thread. The internal thread of the insert will match the shifter.
You might also look to Castle metals for your material. They are "nationwide" and have good prices.

Thanks for the advice, didnt think about that before. I am familiar with Helicoils, so i will look into it if I decide to go along with the poly-plastic materials

I would go with keensert or timesert over a helicoil in a plastic part that sees as much action as a shifter does...just my preferance (I build custom motorcycles...used to own a shop but it got to be a job so I sold it and went back to work in a test lab).

nice lookin stuff man. Ive been following this thread since its inception. I was thinking of something you could make that i seem to be unable to find. a while back, someone was selling shift knob adapters. Theese adapters threaded onto the shifter & had the tab on the bottom to hold the boot in place. The idea was once u installed this adapter, you could then use any aftermarket shift knob like the 3 setscrew type. Im sure others here know what im referring to. hopefully someone will have pics of the previously availible adapter to aid in your design. I can draw a concept, but hopefully you understand what i mean.

This piece would slide inside the aftermarket shift knob? It would have to be narrow enough to in order for the allen set screws to hold onto it?
Is that wooden knob going to be on a WRX? I think it would be more appropriate on a Jag or Mercedes, but it has very good craftsmenship

this problem is inherent with anything metal in cold weather though.

Sorry for the sorta derail, just a quick question...figured itd be better to ask in here since its about knobs than to make an entirely new thread :)
I love the look of the sti red stitching knob, but it only has the 6spd, and not sure if it'd even fit at all(don't really have an sti to compare to readily at hand). Has anyone done a modification of the red stitching sti knob for a wrx at all? So it'd fit/wouldn't be rice having an omg 6spd shifter in a 5spd car.

It will fit, they have the same threading 12x1.25. It will just not have a lip to hold up the shift boot. And it wont really add another gear, so make sure someone else driving doesnt try shifting to 6th and hits reverse at 60mph ...

*edit* probably a stupid question but how hard is it to take the shift pattern "gems" off shifters, is it pretty much just like debadging?

That is titanium. Its not burned either. You pass an electric current through the metal to get the blue/purple/yellow colors to appear on the titanium surface.
I make these from aluminum so it wont work. Besides, titanium is like 300-400 dollars for a foot long rod

It definitely can NOT reproduce every mechanical part of itself.
Im sure a good machinist can lathe himself some new hubs and tail stocks, but definitely is not going to be making himself a whole new lathe anytime soon.
