Peru Pro Roll-Call part 2

10th Warrior 06-07-2006 01:11 PM
Yep, near half the cost of upgrading to the Quaife to keep the crappy stock unit.
ESP is good for you :)

I replaced a rear halfshaft on my RS last night, and there are definitely no external clips or pins. Just pop the old one out and slide the new one in.
XeviousR 06-07-2006 01:36 PM

Phil, can you remove the rear diff without touching the suspension, or do the half shafts prevent it? I'm just preparing to replace my STi's half shaft, and after doing mugwumps' last night, I'm thinking dropping the rear diff might be easier than tearing a corner down completely.
jcroy66 06-07-2006 01:41 PM

Didn't have to touch the suspension for the rear diff. Just had to remove the axleback exhaust.
bbimpreza 06-07-2006 01:42 PM

We were able to get the diff out without touching the suspension in Peru. They took off the exhaust, disconnected the driveshaft and pulled out the bolts holding the diff.
XeviousR 06-07-2006 03:26 PM

Cool thanks. Thats the way I'll do it.

Awesome..now the question is, should the few BSP cars carry around spare axles, lol, or $400 to buy them off the guy that brought spare.. ;)
PhilC 06-07-2006 04:06 PM

Those studs that go into the diff cover at the back are a real bear to pull the first time. If I hadn't pulled those out a couple months back to put in the differential bushings there is no way we could have done that as quickly as we did. Those studs just suck since the only took you can get on them is an open ended wrench.

If I went through the trouble of carring around spare axles (you'd need one for each side), and there was still the possibility that I may break one of mine, I'd want more than $400 to part with it...

What would make sense is to partner with someone who would be at the same events and each buy an axle for opposite sides. I'm going to be at DC and Topeka (Pro Finale and Championship). Anyone want to team up? Of course there is the chance that both people would break the same side at the same weekend, which would blow.
SloRice 06-08-2006 12:01 AM

why wouldn't they be interchangeable....and don't say "because they have different part numbers" :p

cough hint..hint.. .from all my reading it's the passenger rear that likes to do twisty snapping action...hmmm...might be worth picking up from the dealer and holding on to the receipt in case I don't use it just for DC and Nats  (Joel - your idea is good as well, let me think about it ;) )

Phil - any pictures of what bolts you are talking about?

J

Anyone have any good ideas how to raise money to go to nats? Some of us spend to much money (ie me :D ) and have little left to take a huge expensive trip like nats.. I may ask my sponsors, I would love the experience.

Camping is allowed on site this year. They will have showers and bathrooms. :)

There goes the hotel expenses, which was one of the bigger costs if you didn't room with a few other people. Just need beer money now!!!

If KC's wife doesn't come out this year, then I just may camp out and make a week out of it. :D

I'm sure someone will post the exact reason, but I think it's because they are different lengths.

Karen
equal length axles are cool, but live ones, not so cool

Camping does nothing to alleviate the baby doll's budget :p

But I don't think that's the norm, but it does prove a point, lol.

For one, get a good co-driver. Someone that can split gas money, hotel expenses, tires, etc. I'm sure you'll have no shortage of people willing to drive your car. Finding someone who can pay the bills (or has a tow vehicle if needed) is harder
crystalhelix 06-08-2006 01:41 PM

send you email...thread getting off topic, lol

camping is no fun if there is no wind break nearby. i camped for nats '04 and got absolutely zero sleep every night due to the 20mph wind that beat my tent to death.

crystalhelix 06-08-2006 02:40 PM

thanks for the tip nate...
SloRice 06-08-2006 03:11 PM

FWIW, I broke the passenger side axle last summer, then the drivers side a couple months ago. :p

I don't think they are different lengths....the diff sits right in the middle of the car.
crystalhelix 06-08-2006 04:02 PM

turbo pwn3s me..

I'd be happy to stand outside your tent and break wind if you'd like, but I don't think it will be any less noisy.
