Check your owners manual for the weight restrictions though. There is a limit.
thorrad 02-05-2007 07:09 PM

Anyone know what the towing capacity is for the STI? I am thinking of doing the same thing with mine...

Before you all blow a gasket over my rediculous use of a sportscar I just want to have the option to haul some stuff from time to time. I am not trying to make it a wagon with kick....

T

BTW I love that mod.

It seems like just about every Subaru has a 1000 lb capacity, 2000 with trailer brakes. But towing with sedans is "not recommended".

+1 for Factory Hitch
I too put the Factory Hitch on my 04 STi for towing a tire trailer and some extras to the autoX AND so I could put a bike rack on it when needed. It bolts right on and comes with the lighting hardware. It's a great mod. She can pull the snot out of my lil built up Harbor Freight built trailer.

Hey can you put a hitch for a trailor on a 02 RS? Does it have enough power stock?
That is disgusting..and its not even an opinion its FACT. if you can afford an sti you can afford a winter beater to drive to and from the mountain....
winter beater??

i don't consider a 30k$ car some crazy elite exotic. let alone one with awd. what's the point? iirc the sti is rated for 2k# towing.

No, not an axel, it connects the front and rear set of axels, so they don't spread under load (not sprung on a frame like a truck)

And no, it's not an auto.... it was a little tough gettin it moveing, out in the field, but once the clutch locked up, no problems... and yea, that WAS a lot of weight... i prolly wouldn't do that again... but i wanted to see if she would pull it and it did, no problem.

I've towed trucks before, well over 5mi at a pop... a GMC Jimmy to be exact, had to tow it to the dealership (4 different times) no problems....

etrailer sells 3 hitches for the WRX. Only the Curt is supposed to fit. Is that the one that you bought? Do you have a stock muffler? Exactly what did you have to do to get it to fit? I test fitted the Drawtite and the Curt yesterday. Since both required bending the rear lip of the spare tire well in the floorpan and the Curt required cutting the bumper cover (things I didn't do yet), I had to guess about muffler clearance. It looks like the Curt might be OK, but the Drawtite would certainly need longer hangers (how many need to be replaced, I wonder, just the 3 around the muffler?) if that would even work. The Curt side plates are toed in (shipping damage?) so that would have to be fixed to use it at all. Neither will allow the use of the diffuser, but it won't work with the hitch in the way, anyway. (if it ever did work)
15secWRX 03-25-2007 06:22 PM

i bought the e-trailer brand hitch
i have the stock exhaust
the lip for the spare had to be bent a little
no cutting required

Sorry if its been posted before i didnt read through the full thread.
we have XL hangers that we produced years ago for the wagon guys that installed hitches. it will lower the exhaust 0.75" from stock.

Did you have to remove the diffuser? If I can find a hitch that allows
the rear diffuser to remain unmodified, then I'm in. I need a good
way to haul my bikes :p
251 03-25-2007 07:22 PM

FWIW, here is my '07 Outback Sport with a Draw-Tite reciever. Not modifications necessary, no rubbing, no cutting, no exhaust problems. The hitch was about $95 from one of the online shops.

are you talking about the xtra long hangers you sell already? or are the ones you are talking about a different length? the reason i ask is b/c i got the xtra long hangers but after installing them i felt they lower the exhaust too much

X-VWGLX 03-25-2007 08:58 PM

Year model??
Just for clarity, which year model WRX are you talking about.
I had a 2002 witha a Drawtite Class I hitch- no bending or drilling required.
I hauled a homemade Tiretail and bike rack. So quick and easy to use. The bike rack attached in 10 seconds, and then the bike was out of the wind (better ags milage).
The 2005 STI has no underpans, etc. Has anyone attached a trailer to an 05?
How was the clearance/fit/installation? Any cutting or bending? Thanks

X-VWGLX, I have a 2006 STI with stock exhaust.

15secWRX, you are confusing me. It's hard to tell from your picture, but does your hitch crossbar have one piece or 2 welded together? A one piece is a Drawtite or Hidden Hitch. A 2 piece is a Curt. I don't think etrailer makes their own hitches. From my test fit yesterday, the advantage of the Curt seems to be that you can use stock exhaust hangers (maybe), you don't have to bend as much of the spare tire well lip and the finish is more durable. (my 3 Drawtites rusted REALLY fast) I hear the Hidden Hitch also has a more durable finish. The advantage of the Drawtite seems to be that you don't have to notch the bumper cover. Neither seems to have the hole for the exhaust hanger in the right spot and neither will allow the use of the rear diffuser. They both could have hidden better and had none of the issues above if the companies had spent a little time on the details. I'm not impressed.
15secWRX 03-25-2007 09:42 PM

Its a drawtite
X-VWGLX 03-26-2007 04:10 PM

exhaust hanger
just a thought...
it looks like the bolt for the exhaust hanger on the Curt instructions show the hanger is bolted to the hitch (NOT a welded hanger)
would it be possible to just drill your own hole and relocate the hieght of that hanger so that you dont need to buy cartboy exhaust hangers?
scrawshaw 03-26-2007 04:50 PM

Nice thought X-VWGLX, but the hole in the side plate is as low on the side plate as it can go already. I'm thinking that I might just order a set of XL and regular Kartboy hangers. (they are only $8-9 each and I think my car only has 4; probably only 3 that need to be replaced, since 1 is so far forward, I doubt it matters) That way if I have a hard time getting one or more of the stock ones off, I can just cut them off, lube up the mount and slide a new one on. This will allow me to try my old Drawtite from my 2005 WRX Wagon again (no bumper cover cutting with the Drawtite, unlike the Curt) after sanding and repainting it and if there still is something I don't like about it, just use the new Curt instead. I probably won't need the XL hangers with the Curt, but with my plan, I will have the set of regular Kartboys ready for that situation.

Not an STI, but thought I'd share, since I offered support before.

The Curt requires bumper cutting?

Scroll down to the pics of the blue car.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1101053&highlight=curt+hitch

I am planning on getting this hitch, but if you say you need to trim the bumper, then I don't want it. I don't see any sort of trimming on the bumper of that car. The notch in the bumper above the hitch is already there from the factory on mine.
SubNiSmO 03-30-2007 11:08 PM

i think it's cool, great job :)
bruin 03-31-2007 10:45 AM

I had the same setup on my 05 STI before I sold the car. I bought an 06 STI and now I have a roof rack. I much prefer the hitch because when not in use I can just take it off and store it. With the roof rack it is always there and makes too much noise when driving on the highway even with the fairing. I use the rack year round with skis in the winter and bikes in the warmer weather, I didn't buy the hitch because of the rear diffuser but I think I will go ahead and do that and sell the roof rack. So to all the naysayers out there.Too each his own. Don't hate.

I just put the Curt on my car last night. I did not cut the bumper, but I can see how someone might want to. the hitch just leans against the lowest point of the rear bumper cover, near the tailpipe, so the cover gets presses down just enough to make the "line" look a little uneven. I probably will cut it just to improve esthetics. (sorry cant post pics)
The Curt is better quality than the Hiddenhitch I had on my 2002 WRX. the powedercoat/paint is thicker and glossier. Fit is perfect. Installed in 25 min.
This is the only and best way to carry sporting accessories (bikes, boards, track tires).
