He was having breakfast this morning with Phil, Mikko, and Jarmo as we walked in for breakfast. Oh, sooooo cool.

I was able to get Petter, Mikko, Phil, and Jarmo to sign my sun visor this morning. I was hoping for a drivers hat, but Petter did not have any to spare :( I will try again tonight.
We got some awesome pictures, but they are on 35mm so it will take me a couple days to get them hosted.

I'm not talking about that. The last few stages, Solberg just flew right by Hirvonen...was he just that much faster? Or were team orders in place for Hirvonen to slow down?
| pegdrgr | 03-14-2004 04:43 PM |
He was just faster. Petter was on a mission. I figured if it cme down to it team orders would determine it, but I do not believe Mikko slowed at all for Petter.
Maybe I will have the chance to ask! Ahhh that would be soooo cool.

Great Pics Peg! Yes, Petter is the nicest driver out there. The worst is perhaps Markko. He's pissed even on a good day.
Ok, just watched the coverage, and now it's time for WRX'd observations:
1. Did you see Sevinge Loeb in the Rally Magazine preview show? She's hawt!
2. Bob Varsha?
3. Sheep in NZ, Horses in Argentina, Alg in Sweden, and Cows in Mexico! It's a wild kingdom out there!
4. You say Peugeot has p/s probs?
5. If you didnt get the hint, Marcus marcus needs 2 more gears
6. What's with the tire rule? Thats goofy. That was a safety issue.
7. My next toast is to Marc Marti's thumb.
8. You saying that Sebastian couldnt find a drain plug in that landfill on the side of the road?
9. Petter was THE star of the rally.
10. Me likes indoor parc ferme
11. In case you didnt notice, Subaru wants you to buy a WRX. Enuf w/ the commercials already!
12. Mitsu has much work to do.
13. No PWRC blurb?
14. Why the heck is Mikko obsessed with the Cortina? Cute car, but... Ok, whatever.
15. Nice tricycle Harri!
16. I hope the spectators enjoyed the event as much as Nicky did.
17. No gravel crews make for a grouchy Phil.
18. We need Skoda back already.
19. ImprezaWRC04 looks strong.
20. If Francios keeps his tongue out like that, he's about to eat it!
21. I'd like to do this event next year. What's your take guys?

*** kind of battery does SWRT using to cause Solberg car not to fire?
| Chromer | 03-15-2004 01:26 PM |
Could have been he threw an alternator belt and it wasn't charging...
Or just a bum terminal connector or a bad ground wire...
Lots of things might have caused that.

What kind of tools can they carry on the rally cars? I'm surprised that Sebastian Loeb doesn't have any quick patch putty/sealant/duct tape on-hand given that the cars are always leaking stuff left and right.

couldnt he have push started it?
| Craig W | 03-15-2004 10:03 PM |
The car was on an incline. They couldn't push the car at all so they couldn't have push started it. They only needed to move the car about five yards to get it where they would have been allowed to get help.
| brentlz | 03-15-2004 10:08 PM |
Um, push start it uphill? Maybe drop it in reverse and bump start it down the hill? With the amount of electronics in modern cars, I'd doubt it could even operate without a functional battery... The 5-minute penalty does suck big time, but on the bright side it could have been an exclusion!
And yes, Petter is a majorly nice guy! Had the pleasure of chatting with him at Rim a couple years back...a fan for life!

Here is a little eye candy for you. I finally was able to get the film developed from this weekend.
Does anyone have the show available for download? If not I would be willing to buy a copy of it on DVD or VHS. Since we had guest house sitting for me I could not record the show while I was in Mexico.

I almost had a head on with Carlos, I hope that didn't show.
Sorry had to make you wait for the story. As we were heading down the hill from stage 8 Carlos was going up for stage 10. Well at one corner that looked like this (.( [the dot is a telephone pole], me and a VW took the outside to let Carlos have inside, a crazy cab drive tried to pass us by using the inside corner. Well Carlos turns the car to the outside and hits the brakes, the VW goes in to the ditch and I come to slam on the brakes. Needless to say both me a Carlos came with in about a foot of a head on. IT YET WORSE. So with that panic over I throw it in reverse and then stall(car is at about a 35 degree angle). Carlos is screaming and waving his hands. I get it started and we slowly pass each other.
Yes I took the STi, I was the 45th most photographed car in Mexico this week. Every time I turned around people were taking pictures with the car, on the rally stage it was even worse than in town. As we would come down from rally stage the local waved and cheered like we where rally stars. The car was amazing(ran a mix of 3 gals of 104 with 13 gals of 93) it took every bump and hit, never got unsettled and Iam speechless about the car on the Stages(ran some after the last safety car)
Only problem was a 6 inch hole the the stock tire about 120 kl before Leon. Finding tires was not fun, but I did find them. That story got around the pits, even one of the crew member from Portigal (sp) with a Group N car just came up a asked about the tire issue. I had never seen the guy before or visited the team so how he knew ??, he was not the only person, local were asking also.
Talked to Nicky Grist for about 30 minutes, got Petter's Autograph, part off Allisters McCrae's smashed, rolled and flipped car.
Photos up soon, also a video that will be in Off Topic as Street racing is not allowed. Teaser is my STi vs famous rally driver in a works car( he started the race).

I think I am in the street racing video you took.
You were chasing WRC subie on Blvd. Adolfo Lopez.
I was in a white (now covered in mud) rental Sentra.
You pass me from my left side after a red signal.
My rental hit a huge pot hole too.
Mine was worse.... I hit it under the engine and busted open the oilpan on the rental car. It just happened outside the hotel in the Leon city and I managed to get back to hotel with pouring oil on the road.
Hertz sent me Chevy Suburban as a replacement car. lol.

^ Pace notes were ALL wrong. They made one really big mistake and ended up at a Taco Bell! ;)
(the cars drive from stage to stage, and service, depending on where it's located. Many times, it requires traversing on the public roads to get there. This is pretty ordinary, albeit really funny to see every time I see a pic of a rally car driving on the highway. You should see what happens when the cops get involved- last year in Great Britain, IIRC, a couple boys were arressted for some alleged "high speed testing" from one stage to the next. Likewise, the cars have to try and limp to service - this means, on occasion, with major leaks, body panels/doors falling off the car, or in the case of this rally, without left a front wheel or axel!

those rally cars were blasting on the streets. if that was in US, "going to jail" speed for sure.
one of the peugeot had to drive back to service on a regular street with 3 wheels, I wish I saw that one.

Teaser is my STi vs famous rally driver in a works car( he started the race).
shoracer, I think that is the coolest post I have ever read...
you actually RACED a WRC driver?!!! I won't say any more, but that is the coolest ever.
and you got Petter's autograph and talked to Nicky Grist?!!
You sir are now a legend in my book! :D

You should have been there driving in Mexico was crazy, they have speed limits, but no one follows them and if you do the other drivers give you crap. The cops were also told to leave the WRC drivers alone, along with visitors from other countries.
Hey go go go at least you weren't the SEAT that got a hole in the oil pan about a 3rd of the way up the road to the stages on day 2. And, I know you can back me up about the speed the WRC cars where doing on the street along with the crazy Mexican drivers. Driving that way was fun. Oh, and if any one had entered a Taxi driver in the race he would have won and still not needed a co-driver.

LOL this sounds stupid but... Don't they get a warning that they will be driving in the street? LOL I can't see a cop pulling over the Subaru WRC beacuse he was going faster then the speed limit KNOWING you have a WRC rally in town And knowing your never see a car like that on the street.. and that dirty.
| shoracer | 03-17-2004 02:22 AM |
Hey even took the guns and clubs away from most of the Policia for the week so they could not be any horror stories. I even drove around with a cop with lights on(they never turn them off) behind me as I did double the speed limit and he didn't care, he even passed me.

What were they doing on the street?

The transits are done on public roads. One of the coolest things about actually spectating a rally is that you're driving along, and the next thing you know Colin McRae is swerving into your lane! When we were in England for Rally GB last year we just about hit the three works Pugs in a roundabout, we were so shocked to see them right in front of us. (Okay, the lack of sleep probably also had something to do with it -- we'd only had about two hours at that point!)
Shoracer, it's weird that you should mention nearly running head-on into Carlos Sainz... We saw someone nearly hit him head-on while in Wales. He must have some kind of curse.
Someone asked about the 307's four-speed gearbox... They decided that it's got enough low-end torque that they didn't need more gears. Fewer gears means less shifting which should (theoretically) lead to more speed since less time is lost changing gears. They have a five-speed gearbox homologated, but I don't think they've used it yet. (Though I think if they dont' switch over to it, Marcus is going to rip the transmission out and start beaning some people over the head!! :D )

You should see him dance!
Seriously, this was as good as any spring break I have ever been on. A few memories:
-Four of us flying through Mexican dirt roads in an STI on brand new non-DOT rated Pirelli street tires (shoracer scared Chris a few times who is a seasoned SCCA Driver)
-Bar(s). IN a MALL!
-Pushing a local van up the same dirt road hills so we could get by
-A bevy of beautiful local babies
-$0.50 Coronas at gas stations, they should have sent a poet, it was that glorious
-And finally, I quote "ATTENTION, There is a fiesta de <name omitted> in the el streeto, VAMINOS! What? You have never had a fiesta in el streeto? Well, we need to find a good street and it will be AWSOME."
Make your reservations for next year TODAY!

And, I was in control of the car at all time, only Chris got scared.
Now watch people try to do what I could do on the road behind me was fun.
The tires are at least z rated.
van with burn up torque converter.
coke that gave you good burp at the same gas station.
Chris the quote maker, boy I wish I could post them El Chriso.
(oops curse word) why am I married.

Can I be a legend too?
I got to go to the post rally party and got completely drunk with Nicky, Petter, Mikko, Marcus (he left early) Marcus's co-driver Timo Rautiainen, Herve Pannizzi, Sebastion Loeb plus many of the mechanics. Amazing band, great dancing, free beer! I stumbled out at 5am and Petter,Mikko and Timo were still there. I was holding Nicky up for a while (actually, it may have been the other way around) and I got to grab Timo's ass (don't ask, I have no idea why, but he told me to do it)
Great fun!
If you missed my post, my photos from the rally are up on www.subaru.net under Corona Rally Mexico/ Morgan Segal Photography

You would "think" the Police would know about the WRC, but I have video of the Police pulling over the first car in at the SCCA Pro-Rally "Rim of the World", because of too many lights on the car...they had not been told about the rally (and the 100 cars running around the area). The crowd (waiting for the car to come in) surrounded the police and the rally team and as I walked up with the video camera going, I told the officer to call for backup;)

Hertz sent me Chevy Suburban as a replacement car. lol.
Dude!!! You went? Badass... I am down for next year! Hit me up at that time.
