I got the new mouldings today. They fit and look perfect. It took about 10 min in the dark with a drop light.
The old mouldings will pop straight off. Pull upwards and they will come loose. Becareful not to loose the clips because they will be needed to resecure the new mouldings. The clips will slid off the old mouldings. Take the clips and slide them back on the attachment points of the roof. You will see how they slide back on once you are there. Keep the clips flush with the outside edge. Sounds confusing now but again you will see what I mean. You will notice that you will be short 1 clip on each side. This is because the roof rails covered one attachment point. I am not worried about the new mouldings falling off but I guess you could order 2 when you order the mouldings. Make sure to space the clips out evenly. I think the one empty spot I chose was the third from the rear. Just use your best judgement. The rails will now be installed from the front to the back. Insert the new moulding and make sure that the moulding is under the front windshield weatherstrip. This is the side with a guide-clip attached to it. Now press down at the spot where the clips were. Becareful not to bend the new mouldings. They will sit flush on the outer edge but leave a gap on the inboard edge. Look at the old mouldings to see what I mean.
Just a side note. The roof rails will rub the paint some and will need to be polished out. It's probably better to polish the roof without the mouldings so you don't get compond on them. I couldn't wait. It's probably also better to do this mod early so to minimze the rubbing of the paint.
I will get a hold a digital camera this weekend and post the final pics.
Enjoy,
Russell
Is that right? Is he saying you can do the roof rail removal mod without removing the headliner? Anyone here actually done it this way?

As I understand it, he had already removed the rails and was driving around with the plugged holes exposed. The TRIM pieces just pop on and off from the top.

You cannot remove the rails themself without removing the head liner.
You can remove the strips, but not easily.
You cannot replace the rails with the rail less strips without removing the headliner nor fill the plugs.
I just did this modification two days ago (Sun 03/13/2005).
It's the best mod out there. Will totally change the look of your wagon, it won't even look like the same car. I'm still adjusting to the change, but love it.

Scoobymods.com has it pretty much down.
No need for pics, it's very straight forward.
If you're nervous... have someone else do it for you.
I think I had it tore apart and the liner out in about 25-30 minutes with two people working.
It's really easy & straight forward.

The only thing that's keeping me from this is that I'm a cheapass and don't want to spend $100+ on two strips of plastic. That and the fact that I'll be SOL next time snowboarding season comes around, so I'll either have to remount it or buy another rack. Which makes the project get more expensive every time I think about it.

Question: Is the roof panel the same on the 2006 as the 2002? I want to remove the racks on a 2006 and need part numbers for the plastic strips that cover the groove where the racks sit. I have P/Ns for parts that fit a 2002.

Did this mod a couple days ago, only took a couple hours. Really easy, if you just follow the directions. Everything comes apart without hardly any drama. I have a 2004 and used the 2006 part with no issues. I would be willing to bet that 2002's fit exactly the same. Make sure you get some silicone to seal up the holes...I don't have much faith in those expansion plugs that they recommend.

YES! Silicone FTW! Took me about 2 hours, the hardest part is removing the trim from the b and c pillars and snapping it back together without overlapping/snapping anything.

Here's a picture of my wagon sans-roof rails. I traded them with a Saab guy for his trim pieces straight up.
I had my Yakima rack still from my old Impreza, so I just bought new Q-clips so I can still put the rack on the car for my kayak/skis/bike, etc. Then take it off when I don't need it (90% of the time)

I paid $700 for it about 4-4 1/2 years ago. Looks factory on the inside and I have NEVER had a leak. If I had to struggle to find one complaint, it would be that you get a slight bit of rattle (I'm talking very faint, barely audible) in sub 40degree weather. It's power and about the twice the size of sunroofs that come factory in the WRX limited package. I love it!

unless you are talking about he sunroof, which in that case you are more lost... since the thread is about the roof rails AND was started nearly TEN years ago... much newer discussions about removing roof rails.

Part #'s are correct for '02-07 models. Be sure to get the EXACT part #'s listed here ending in 000 & 010... there are different Sedan & wagon smooth modlings & the sedan's are 6" longer & cannot be cut... ask me how I know... I have sedan modlings in my garage because my local subbie dealer chose to "look up" the parts instead of use the part # I gave them. then refused to exchange them because they were a special order item.
correct Part #'s:

If some of the pics, especially on pages 1-3 don't work its because the thread is 10 years old & the links are dead. pics on pages 4-5 should work.
