Repainting 06 Impreza Trunk Emblem part 2

sperry7 08-03-2006 05:00 PM

The chrome plastic backplate is glued (very strongly) to the actual emblem. You must separate them by pushing from behind like it's been said a few times.

That looks great BlowDro!

BlowDro,

Could you post a pic of the whole back end of the car. I have been thinking of doing this for a while. and so far it looks sweet on your car!

Awesome you did it! Looks good.

I just picked up some black paint at Walmart and gonna give this one more try. If it doesn't come out the way I like this time then I'll just order a new one and keep it stock
surfer.tech 08-04-2006 01:54 AM

yess.. blowdry more pics.
BlowDro 08-04-2006 10:08 AM

i will be painting my key hole later today when i get more paint. fyi, the paint i used is duplicolor automotive touch up in a spray can. the colors called artic white, IT IS NOT AN EXACT MATCH, its more of an off white color. duplicolor does make an oem color from 1998 called glacier white.

^^^ Looks good BlowDro! Kinda looks like it's a clear and chrome badge over your OEM paint...which is sweet :D
surfer.tech 08-04-2006 02:27 PM

blowdry.. have you tried subaru touch up paint? wouldnt that be more of a match? looks good man
BlowDro 08-04-2006 03:08 PM

yes that would be a better match, but i do not think it comes in a spray can. from years of experiance building scale models, you will not get as smooth of finish with brushed on paint.
antidote11 08-04-2006 04:52 PM

Yoo Shin, how's that wingless trunk rockin' ?

I dig the badge by the way. I ordered a "i" badge that I am going to use for the trunk lid. I am going to go around the emblem with a white stabilo pencil and then pull it off. Put some double sided tape on the "i" badge and use the pencil markings so it's nice and centered. :D
wrx88 08-10-2006 03:48 PM

I haven't removed my badges yet, but i was considering using a vinyl sticker instead of paint. Is this possible/practical?
sperry7 08-10-2006 03:52 PM

I have no idea... might not look really flush. I think it won't look as good as paint but who knows? Let us know how it goes if you try it.
wrx88 08-10-2006 04:11 PM

I don't know what the back of the inside of the emblem looks like (the part that is painted). Is it flush or do the chrome stars protrude a little bit?
06BlackSTIwith550WHP 08-10-2006 10:37 PM

Problem
I don't know what the back of the inside of the emblem looks like (the part that is painted). Is it flush or do the chrome stars protrude a little bit?
I took my Emblem off the trunk of my 06 STI and I ruined it. After I realized I ruined it and could not fix it I called up my local dealer and bought a new one. I took the old one and cut it in half with a Bandsaw once I had it in half I poped the piece that is the stars and the blue backround out and the stars and the blue are one piece of plasctic that can NOT be separated and painted. I will post pictures of the Emblem cut in half soon. I think that Subaru made it so it's almost impossible to debadge the 06 between those 2 big holes in the trunk and the redesigned emblem.
wrx88 08-10-2006 11:56 PM

YIKES! I'm going to go with a black paint.

How exactly did you mess it up? It's pretty hard to (unless you're me :D ). Just can't man handle it. If you do the pencil size drill hole and do it very slowly to just get through the back plastic plate then you're good to go to just pry it apart. I made the mistake of using small bit and ended up puncturing into the inner surface. I've got it painted black right now and it looks pretty good for being redone 3x

Dude...you need to SAND the blue paint off the back of the clear badge, which leaves the stars intact! Then you paint the back a new colour! If you read this thread you will see EXACTLY how to drill into the back of the metal badge, seperate the stars/blue piece from the metal backing piece, and then sand the blue paint off, and repaint.
wrx88 08-11-2006 05:00 PM

What type of paint and application works the best, in everyone's experience. I Just want black, nothing fancy. Would model paint applied with a brush leave a nice finish?
sperry7 08-11-2006 06:24 PM

yeah that should be fine. I used Subaru touch-up paint and in the light you can see the blue flakesa little so that's kinda cool. Good luck. No pics sorry my camera does not work anymore!
semaj 08-11-2006 06:58 PM

I used pink nail polish brushed on, for my grille badge :D
wrx88 08-12-2006 01:10 AM

depending on what time i decide to start my day, I'll either go to a dealer and buy some touch up paint or some regular black model paint. I still can't post pictures and i don't know how to host images.... But i will take pics anyway and post them elsewhere.
wrx88 08-12-2006 04:06 PM

Need Help Asap!!!
Ok, i just got the front badge off of the grill and sperated it into the chrome piece and the painted piece with the paint and stars on it. Do i just sand the blue now? Is the clear plastic attached to the painted section? Please advise. I did a search but couldn't find pics of the actual process. Thanks.

Thats exactly what I did i figured use a small bit first and then I'll use the bigger one after but I kept drilling little by little and checking to see when I could see through to the black and by the time I saw the black I also saw the clear.

mine didnt have the backing piece!!! when I got it off I was like huh wonder where the back piece went, the badge is plastic, and it is not blue paint its colored plastic. I messed it up already so it dont matter
Rexxyou 08-13-2006 03:46 PM

this is inspiring guys. i was all down in the dumps that i couldent shave my trunk completly but now i see a new light.

Well I don't know what to tell you man...EVERYONE else's '06 rear badge has a metal backing plate, and the plastic is clear with blue paint on the back. Maybe you got the 1 in a million unique badge  Why don't you take some pics and show us how you messed it up?
wrx88 08-14-2006 11:03 AM

I messed mine up. The pointed bit went too far into the badge and screwed up the clear part. Maybe ill buy a new one and use a bigger bit so this doesnt happen again.

wrx88 08-28-2006 02:30 PM

I think using a much larger bit will avoid damaging the emblem, but mine isn't that noticeable, so I'll leave it how it is.
SubieCubed 08-28-2006 08:10 PM

I am going to try drilling in the center of the posts. It seems the drill bit will break through without drilling into the blue part of the badge. The other side of the post is recessed.
ESEMES 08-28-2006 08:14 PM

why not just drill a small pilot hole (1/8" or small bit) to pierce the metal, and then 'poke' off the badge from the metal backing?? (use a centerpunch or an icepick, but be careful)

it will seperate, and leave no damage in the process.

this is what worked for me...........

06BlackSTIwith550WHP 08-28-2006 08:22 PM

As the first one of many to Officially admiting to messing the badge up. I have decided to take a different route with the next badge. I am just going to paint to whole face of the badge black so it will just be a black pimple on my trunk lid. I will be posting pics on friday.
SubieCubed 08-28-2006 08:22 PM

HHMMMMMM.....That's another good idea. I wish the rear badge was as easy as the front.

I tired that, but i couldn't get enought leverage to pop the two pieces apart. I think heating up the adhesive would have made it possible. But that's life!

drill in the outer corner edge.

more leverage there.....
SubieCubed 08-30-2006 09:51 PM

I got my new badge and decided to drill in the center of the posts and it worked wonderfully. I used a 1/4" drill bit and it broke through the back without the drill bit even touching the front portion of the emblem. Just make sure to drill slow with very little pressure. I then used a punch to push the front out. Now I just need to sand, paint and reattach. I'll try to post some pics when I'm done.

RskTrance4mer 09-04-2006 02:45 PM

for the trunk emblem how do i remove it off the trunk? just a heat gun and pull it off?!
for the trunk emblem how do i remove it off the trunk? just a heat gun and pull it off?!
I tried the all the methods but those didnt work for me. So i took blue painters tape and taped as far under the emblem I could get and around it, then heated it with a heat gun and used a bondo spreader wrapped in a microfiber cloth and pushed on one of the guides from behind and the bondo spread slipped right under the side of the emblem. then i just pushed with the bondo spreader and it came right off.

read my previous posts in this forum and you will find out why I did this
J-Chow 09-28-2006 12:09 AM

I tried using fishing line and a hair dyer to remove the rear emblem, but that thing won't budge.

Any advice on what you guys did to remove the rear emblem? I got the front one painted, that was a piece of cake. It's just the rear one that's causing me troubles :(
antidote11 09-28-2006 12:29 PM

Open your trunk and look at the emblem from the inside. You'll see how you need to remove it. It has bolts or some sort.
