Well the wing doesn't put down that much force IMO, it will not close the trunk at over 100MPH. But maybe it takes alot of pressure to close the trunk if it is not moving down first. Seriously.....

Well, there are a lot of factors. The trunklid is spring loaded and you have to take inertia into account when modelling the system.

OK I will hold your hand......Think about it, if the wing produces downforce and is functional then if the trunk is open(not latched) then at XX speed shouldn't it close the trunk so that it latches because it is pushing the rear end down? Is this that hard to comprehend? The thread is about if the STI wing is functional.......

Why does this need locked?
this is a low tech way to find out if the the wing is functional enough to push the rear end down. Clearly it is not, because the pressure from the wind going through or over or both the wing will not latch the trunk closed. I don't own a wind tunnel and I don't think you do either.
If you don't like this topic the answer is simple..... don't read it......, you are what is wrong with the FCC and america these days. Yeah lock the thread so we can't discuss this anymore because someone can't comprehend what someone is talking about. I have not broken any rules.

That test has absolutley no corrolation with reality with the trunk open and unlatched there is a lot of varibailes involved like where the air pressure is going and does it effect the actual purpose of the wing because of the angle I think results from that little 'test' are purely irrational. I say its time for people to get educated and if the results are true post a video or scientific calculations or something - not this "well my friend said this and he has an sti" or whatever.

I guessing the wink ;) was in response to older 911's being air cooled and had no radiator
The turbo wing orginally was for down force on the early models (late 70's) AS time went on they added intercoolers and such which migrated into filling up the space in the later turbo wings. With the amount of power the turbo was putting down even at higher speeds 100+ the wheels would sometimes break free when the turbo kicked in.

first space-ghost, figure out how much force is needed to close the trunk when its resting on the latch, youll see it takes a good deal of force to do this, probably more then 60 lbs. Then figure out the angle difference caused by the trunk being open and figure out the difference in downforce because of this (and take into consideration the issue of lift from the air going over the trunk lid faster then air moving under the trunk lid and subtract that force from the downforce caused by the different angle. then maybe ill take into consideration your test, if and only if your results come out to less than the 60 lbs of downforce subaru claims on the STi wing. Dont act like your so smart that you figured out some idea to prove the wing is useless if you cant realize that your test alters more than one variable which cannot be controlled in the environmet you are proposing.

I drove the be-winged and wingless versions of the STi when it first came out at the introduction to the press at Fuji Speedway. Back to back, the wingless STi was more unstable in mid to high speed sweepers. It drifted out a bit more and simply couldn't be held at as high a speed as the winged STi through those sweepers. And that was at speeds from 60 to 100mph.
All the wind tunnel arguments and calls for numbers does nothing to change my mind on the need for the wing - pure and simple, I would be faster at the circuit in the winged version.
And for the person that expects it to close the trunk at speed - downforce works on the entire rear end of a car, it doesn't operate like a hand holding a specific point down.
Cheers,
Paul Hansen

OK I just have to put in my 2 cents (maybe not even that much)...
People keep reasoning that subaru engineers approached the STi with the idea of 'how can we make a working streetable version of the WRC wing'
Instead of the subaru engineers looking at the US sport compact market where form>function for most people, and then the engineers said 'how can we make a wing that LOOKS like the WRC wing for the street car'
For proof I ask the two following questions
1) How many US subaru cars have a hood scoop?
Follow up question:
2) How many US subarus have a functional hood scoop?
Hmm...
that porsche is rediculous, what is that???????
Not just hill climbing. I've seen it on a fair number of others at Road America and such.
I'd imagine there are a number of reasons.
At a high enough speed the lower wings aren't getting a enough air to create enough down force
911's have a BIG problem with off throttle oversteer and at high speed that can be bad.
The rear engine setup adds some unique characteristics to the car that this might help over come at speed.
I do however agree that it looks a bit wild but the long sloping rear of 911 is probably not helpful for downforce and this is a very straightforward way of dealing with it.
Also since the car is a RUF Porsche it is capable of speeds north of 200mph

At the speeds I reach on the Autobahn, there is no way I am running wingless. Hitting 120+mph with nothing on the trunk would be not be prudent. The top part of the wing flexes slightly at speed too. Wish I had an interior cage with video so I could shoot it on the foggy mornings. Ask Audi about their wingless TT and the resulting mandatory recall where they were required to add a rear wing. Many in the States probably would not notice it while commuting but hit a track, attain some speed, and I think you will change your mind on the "go wingless" argument. Is it a rally spec wing? Of course not...but how many production cars come with the exact same wing a rally car does? Oh well, only a few more months of enjoying the autobahn here before I return to the 65mph speed limits on the east coast...
well, they have new sensors that you can buy that will tell you the downforce your wing is generating. just saw it in a mag somewhere, anywho, we need to get one hooked up to an STi wing and check it out
Hey, I know you! (tfw2005)
I've seen this car as well...surprised no one has come up with a wing top that fits on to the part they unscrewed the wing from...you would kind of get like a half height STi spoiler.
