September 10 Rally X: Saratoga, NY

When: September 10th, 2005 (Saturday)
RallyRPI is presenting our Inaugural RallyCross Event catering to everyone who has any interests in rallying, off-roading, and sports of the like. The purpose is to bring back the sport and spirit of rallying to the Upstate Region and provide an inexpensive avenue for amateurs to participate and the pro's to practice for the next Stage Rally Event.
This is our first event and Washington County Fairgrounds is gracious enough to help us with the financial situation. The most important thing right now is to reach the break even point for the first event, and if everything goes well the price will eventually drop and the number of events will go up. Trust us when I say we're non-profitable.
Please check it out and e-mail rallyrpi yahoo com (or reply to post) for any questions regarding what so-ever. We're looking for at least 30 early registrants or else the chances of this event happening might be slim (deadline August 10th). Please spread the word around and get this going! I promise it will be BIG and Enjoyable to all once everything gets on track. Help us make this happen.
RallyRPI Inaugural RallyCross at Washington County Fairgrounds
Info:
Early-Registration $45/Car (August 10th Deadline)
Normal Registration $55/Car (After August 10th)
Operation is Non-Profitable and based on meeting minimum event cost
Normal Registration Amount may change depending on Early-Registration Outcome
Condition:
Flat, 100% Grass & Dirt, Fair Parking Lot
Rules& Classes:
TBA (Expect at least 2 classes: Pro & Amateur)

Wow, this is great news! I live in Ballston Lake, and my wife and I would most likely compete.

I'm in NJ right now but I went to RPI where we started the club. If this goes well the next one gets sponsored by Red Bull and a few other smaller companies which will make our costs go down. Biggest thing for us right now is the insurance which is $500. Since most of the club members are RPI students...well you get the point.

Sounds great man. I've only done one RallyX so far because they're all 3+ hours away from this area.
You might want to post over in the Tri State forum too. There are a few Albany-area Subie dudes in there too.

if you can spread the word in any other forums you know of that would be great. I have a bunch of guys in Albany I used to goto meets with that I told about but other then that I don't know too many of the online sites.

I'll see what I can do ;)

Some NER people would probably be down for this too. It's not that far from western MA or southern NH or VT, and NER doesn't have a september event on the schedule.

NER now has an event for the Saturday after this event.
Count me in.
BTW how come this wasn't posted in

Dion and gang,
The word is already getting around as I found this link from the New England Region Rally X list today.
This is great news for Capital District enthusiasts. I remember Gus mentioning getting something like this together at RNY this past April. I'm really glad to see it come to fruition.
Count me in. I'll also post on our icerace.com message board to get some of our gang out there. Keep us posted.
Who can we sign up with?
Thanks,
Mike Kamm

What does that mean? Nobody in the US is paid to rally, so who is a "pro?"
I may have missed something in a previous thread, but can I ask why you are not choosing to use NASA or SCCA sanctioning and insurance?
I hope I'll be able to go, I'll have to check again (right before the early reg deadline!!).

Hey Mike, there's a small lake just off of 87 north of the twin bridges that's full of enough algae that you could probably run rallyX's on it in the summer and ice race in the winter :)

Hey Everyone,
My name is Dominic Gus Lin and most of you know me as Gus if you have ever met me before at any racing events. I'm one of the RallyRPI coordinator for this RallyCross event on September 10th and I will like to thank everyone for their interest. As you know, this is our Inaugural event and our vision is to bring back and re-establish the presence of Rally Racing in Upstate (Mohawk-Hudson) region.
I would like to answer as many questions as I'm allowed by the rules of this forum. I noticed the original post had been edited for content such as the website where the general information is posted is removed. Thus if you're going to register early for this event, please PM me your Name, Vehicle, and Modification if any. As long as I receive it prior to August 10th you're all set. Payment could either be made through Paypal or else paying AT the event is also welcome (although I highly recommend no last minute backout especially from the early reg list).
To get the website address for general information, please PM me and I'll reply ASAP with the link.
BTW, all types of vehicle are allowed in this competition. Trucks, jeeps, sedans...you use your imagination. I do warn against vehicles with high center of gravity such as SUV's and Vans.
All rules and regulations may be found at NASARallysport website in its published 2005 rules; Appendix C to be more specific.
We need atleast 30 early registrants to make this happen, please talk it up and let everyone know. Also, anyone interested in jumping in and giving RallyRPI a hand in coordinating this event, shoot me a PM.
Regards,
Dominic Gus Lin

The way it seems, we're going to have two classes. AWD and FWD. Novice and Pro is going to be hard to divide, but if enough people register, there might be 4 classes.

Hey guys, i've got a bone-stock 2000 2.5RS and am thinkin about giving this a shot. What kinda of trouble am i getting myself into, and what am i required to do to my car to enter it? Also, will we be using co-drivers? Also, is it cool if i just come to watch perhaps? Definitely not looking to win, just for fun (for now...)

Well, if you consider sliding your car sideways into turns and kicking up dirt all over the place fun, I'm sure you won't find any "trouble" with the rallycross. Most of the competitors so far are amateurs and for any beginners who want to get into rallies and learn how to handle the car in a sliding fashion, this is the perfect place to start. Just make sure your car is mechanically sound and ready to go. The place is relatively flat and the course will be designed with safety in mind.

A skidplate is a real good idea. I went to the essex RallyX a few years back and what started with a nice, smooth field resulted in huge ruts and giant rocks getting dug out. I had some pretty good gauges in that skidplate by the end of the day.
That said, most people ran without and there weren't any busted oil pans. Lots of folks went home sans their plastic under-body protection, though :)

Insatiable, Tim is right about how the course can get rutted up, but remember that you can always decide not to continue if that happens. Case in point: At the recent Rally NY Rallycross, a guy with a pristine BMW M3 wanted to give it a try. He asked us if rallycross was going to be too rough for his car. Naturally we told him to walk the course and decide for himself. He decided to run and loved it. He had something like 18" wheels and those little rubber band type low profile tires and still didn't hurt the car at all. Incidentally, the Rally NY rallycross event had quite a few full-on rally cars there and they course did get a little chewed up. But before that point the BMW driver had more than enough runs in, called it a day early, and went home happy.
With a 2.5RS, I'd definately give it a go. All you need is a helmet. :)

I needs specs like insurance, how much money the landowner can expect to receive and the sort, so that I can start looking for some places. There's a lot of farmland off 146 and other areas nearby that's for sale, and I'm sure the owners could use some money to help pay for taxes :-).
That's how we got some land to use in Colorado.
rallysquirrel,
If you know of any other possible sites relative to the capital district area that would be good for a rallycross let us know. A.M.E.C. has expressed an interest in possibly putting a rallycross style event on our scehdule. We are an active year round club, not just ice racing. :)
Jan
We did a couple auto-X's last year and paid a college $500 to use their parking lot each time. I don't handle the insurance end of it so I don't know what the coverages are and how much they might cost. Perhaps Gus or Dion can comment on that.

That was the amount we paid for the use of land as well.
I believe SCCA had $1M of insurance coverage.

16 people preregistered, a month ahead of the event.
That's quite a feat and shows a lot of interest. Let's get more people preregistered. I would be shocked if we don't have at least 30 people compete.

That's a good showing, especially with such an early pre-registration date. I won't know if I can go until the week before (don't know when I can overhaul my brakes).

Count me in as registered! How do i go about officially registering so i qualify for the early registration fee?
I think i'm gonna go with the GC8 Mudflaps from rally armor (dot) com and call it a day...i haven't got the money for a skid plate. I'm open to suggestions if anyone wants to recommend better-protecting/easy-to-install mudflaps or general rally protection equipment...
Also, are we gonna need a co-driver/navigator for this? How long (very rough estimate) is each stage going to be?

I've never used a skid plate.
No you don't need a codriver for this.
I've never seen a rallyx course longer than 3/4 of a mile, UNFORTUNATELLY.

IIRC the one we ran outside of Burlington a few years back was roughly a mile, but my memory could be playing tricks on me.
And you won't need a codriver, but it never hurts either :)

We actually hit 18 pre-registered Competitors as of midnight of the early registration deadline. Amazing figure guys. I would like to thank everyone for the continuing support and relentless advertisement for this very special inaugural event that may turn into something permanent for the future (snow rallyx anyone?)
Seems like RallyRPI is giving a Green Light to proceed with this event and hopefully we do have over 30 turnouts! More participants, more budget to work with, better events to come!
Regards,
Dominic Gus Lin

Wow 18 preregistered. Good job.

Still trucking ahead with this, we're in need of atleast 12 more participants or else you guys know the inevitable.
On seperate news, I'm swapping the turbo to one with a bigger wheel...don't think it's gonna be good for the rallycross but it sure will kick some dirt.
