September 10 Rally X: Saratoga, NY part 3

AngryBlueRS 08-24-2005 07:12 AM

I can add 2 more to the list if both would be allowed to co-drive my car. Will only 2 people per car be permitted, or can we let me sneak in 3? ;)
We're at 25 now. 30 drivers shouldn't be an issue, Gus. Wait until all of the "last minute" types pile in.
Im really hoping to be a last minute person...I should have a 2 driver car...

Chris
Chris we already have one vehicle with three drivers signed up, so I think it's OK. You would let other people drive your STi? Can I be one of them? :D
TimStevens 08-24-2005 08:22 AM

Me too me too! :)
AngryBlueRS 08-24-2005 01:07 PM

LOL! Oh come on, its just an STi. ;)

Actually, I fully expect to get my butt handed to me by anyone in a front wheel drive that knows what they are doing. :D

I promised you folks a pan image of the location and here it is:

Updated the link on my site to include the picture.

I posted links to this thread in the Northeast Regional forum of IWSTI[dot]com. (grrr...10-post rule  )

I'm 90% sure I'll be able to participate in this event.
I'll more than likely be bone stock...including the original RE070s.
ProjectSoloGear 08-25-2005 01:44 AM

Chris, amazing shot of the fairground my friend. That picture definitly do it justice. I've sent out an e-mail to you regarding the rallyx coordination. There will be more information coming as I get them.

Gus

p.s. we need 10 more to make this event happen for SURE.

Does anyone have a booth type canopie? Do you know what I mean.
The quick setup ones. I might be able to borrow one if we have a sunny day.

LOL! As I told Gus, I want to see this go well so I can come back and do a WinterX.

Hey that would be cool. Mine's only 10'x10' so if we have two we could use one at timing and one at registration. That way if we have nasty weather we will not end up with soaked paperwork.

We need about 4-6 more to get over the safe barrier. Please contact me for any questions or concerns. Please check out the website Chris has posted. It's got lots of cool pictures and will give you a great idea about the road condition.

I'd love to offer people a place to crash, but unfortunately we have family visiting that weekend, so our place is going to be packed as it is :(

Anyone who might be staying over would probably be well advised to look for hotels in a place like Clifton Park or somewhere outside of Saratoga, which I imagine would be rather expensive.
Ice racer 08-29-2005 04:34 PM

Gus,

I'd like #42. If Chris' wife will be there, [she's #42 on the NER list] then I'd like #142 as a second choice.

As far as motels, I did a quick Google search for Greenwich, NY and got THIS. I spoke with the owner of Sunshine Inn, right in Greenwich. He said they have five rooms available for Friday night @ $65 a night. They are 2 miles from the Fairgrounds. He also has a Honeymoon suite with a heart shaped jacuzzi for $95 a night if you're feeling lucky. :D
rallysquirrel 08-29-2005 08:29 PM

I'd like #19

This would probably be the time start collecting the money for those that preregistered. What do you think Gus?

I'm going to trust that everyone who has registered so far would show up at the event and pay "cash" during registration. Because this is an inaugural event, I did not integrate a mail-in/paypal payment options, but it will be in effect for the Winter RallyCross (Dec 3rd preliminary date).

If you do not show up and am on the registration list, not only will you put RallyRPI's existance in danger, you'll also get a lot of angry competitors who you'll have to deal with in the future. Honestly though, I'm putting a lot of faith in everyone here.

We have 34 people registered officially! We have BROKE EVEN! :o We will be putting a cap on the event as soon as tonight so we give the paying competitors a fair number of runs.

I'm off to the RPI recruiting fair! Hopefully we'll gain more members for the upcoming semester. Wish me luck.

Let's hope this RallyX turns out to be a KICK ASS event. FYI, we recently gained a sponsor for this event from a company called Wurld Media. They're sponsoring T-shirts for all competitors, cool merchandises like keychains and promo cards (please check our rallycross homepage for more information). In addition, they'll be paying for the Trophies! That means I gotta order them soon...

Please check out their banner

Sorry to see the meaning of life (42) has been taken...

Got my mudflaps on today, and getting quite excited for the events to come.

I once helped out WurldMedia as part of a focus group, and they tend to treat their affilitates quite well. I'd say we're lucky to have them as a sponsor.

What are some of the restrictions on picking a car number, and how does it need to be displayed on the competition vehicle? (where, how large, how's it work if i don't already have a number? etc...)

Also, are non-numeric characters kosher for car numbers? Perhaps something in hex or binary? ;)
BrandonC 09-02-2005 09:21 AM

Give some thanks to TimStevens for suggesting the sponsorship! And then a little less to me for convincing our marketing people to actually sponsor the event. :) I'm excited about it.

If there's a good response from this one, I'm sure I can get them interested in the December one as well!
InsatiableAmos 09-05-2005 01:57 AM

Can i register as Pi or C (the symbol)? If not, whatabout the number (to a few decimal places...)?
AngryBlueRS 09-05-2005 08:24 AM

Not really. :(

The scoring software can deal with 3 digits, so car numbers of 0-999 are pretty much it.

Gus, Tim & Brandon: Congrats on the sponsor! Wow that's awesome! Great work guys.

I'm now back on this coast looking forward to this weekend. Shooting for hitting the fair grounds about 11:00 AM on Friday to start setting up. Along with tape and course setup, I think we should do a full test of gear on Fri so we know everything will run smooth on Sat. Who else will be there to help out on Friday? Chime in now.

Also:
Have we decided on a class structure yet? If so, do we have classes for all the current entrants?

Will we have an AC generator on site? If so I'll bring the FM transmitter so people can listen to scoring through their car radio. I'll also bring a boom box we can leave in the spectator area.

Chris
Ice racer 09-05-2005 08:32 AM

Chris,

I will be there at 11:00 am on Friday to help set up and test.

These are my recommendations for classes:

2S: 2WD stock
2M: 2WD modified
4S: 4WD stock
4M: 4WD modified

I have a member on Nissanforums that wants to sign up. I haven't heard of a cutoff announced yet, so can he still get in? He's coming all the way from Philly. I asked him to send you an email Gus. :)

As for classes, I agree. This is the same list I suggested to Gus, but I have not heard a final verdict yet.

We'll also need a list of mods that bumps a person up to modified. My recommendation was to just go with the NER RallyX class rules. Beats re-inventing the wheel. ;)

Chris
I won't be able to make it right at 11 since I have class that morning. I should make it to the fairground by 12noon. I will be bringing the cones (perhaps in the truck owned by Chris Werner), we can get the stakes out from the fairground storage, and we will also test the timing equipment with the extension cable.

Not quite sure about the AC generator. Doesn't seem like anyone picked up on that. It would be cool to have the FM transmitter though!

Splitting it into 2WD and AWD is good so far. We have the following list

AWD (19)
- Dion Devries Yellow WRX
- Chris Murphy Black WRX Sti
- Jacob Orndorff Obsidian Black Pearl WRX
- Jan Red WRX Wagon #19
- Amanda Stevens 02 WRX #32
- Tim Stevens 02 WRX #64
- Aaron Willen Black WRX

- Matthew Norgren 95 Impreza AWD
- Michael Chan Black WRX #127

- Tim Chevalier 05 Subaru STI #66
- Melvin Williams III 98 Impreza 2.5RS
- Chris Schenk 02 Silver WRX #7
- Brian Mardirosian '05 Legacy GT Wagon #45

2WD (15)
- Dominic Lin Maroon Eclipse Turbo
- Josh Teresco '79 Saab #79
- Michael Kamm 86 Nissan Sentra #42
- Greg Tewes Black BMW 318ti
- Neal Blair 96 VW GTI
- Claude Hutchings Saab 900 Turbo
- Eric Martindale Focus ZX3
- Richard C. Vedder 00 Ford ZX2/SR #22
- Greg Healey '78 Nissan Z
- Greg Godreau '85 Obsidian magma aurora borealis blue Mazda RX-7 GS

- Chris Homes 88 Nissan P/U 4x4
- Jim Huskie 88 Nissan P/U 4x4

It seems like we have pretty nice split down the middle with the competitors. I will be ordering the trophies/certificates tomorrow.

Gus
ProjectSoloGear 09-06-2005 12:43 AM

So, just a quick update.

Today, Jody Busch, the course designer, and three of us went out to the fairground to do the preliminary layout of the course. We used up almost 150 cones. So far here's the stats

- Course total mileage is around 0.5 miles
- Average Finish time is around 1:20 (WRX Sti)
- We can safely let two cars out on the course while the third one waits at the start

If we cap the entrance limit to 35 competitors, let's just say that the average time to finish the course is 1:30 seconds. For everyone to go once, it will take up 52 minutes and 30 seconds. Let's just say with cones getting knocked over and some people DQ'ing the course, it will take one hour to get everyone through one run, and we want to have everyone run atleast 3 times so the minimum run time is 3 hours without any problems. The current run time allowed for the entire event is from 10-12 & 12:30-4:30 (6 hours total). That sounds ok to me. I do think the max cap should be at 40 cars (right now we have 35 and 4 more people pending).

Here's a Quote from Sam (Sti driver who tested on the course today)
Well just got back from setting up the course. :D Man was it fun! Took a long time to set it up and get things tweaked right but it was a blast. I ran it in my STi with the potnezas. Never done anything like that before but boy was it a blast getting it sideways all tires spinning. You guys are gonna have a blast. I know Gus and the rest of the guys have put a lot of time and effort into it so i'm sure you will.
Sent a private mail to Gus. Think we can get in a lot more runs than the original calculations. First we break into 2 groups, 2WD & 4WD. While 2WD is running, 4WD is working and vice versa. Assuming a car goes off every 45 seconds, 20 or so minutes to change over between groups, 30-45 minutes for lunch, we're looking at 6+ runs a piece over the course of the day.

I'll plan on bringing a printer and the FM transmitter in case someone scores us a generator. I would rent one from Home Depot myself, but my car is already going to be packed with stuff.
Today, Jody Busch, the course designer, and three of us went out to the fairground to do the preliminary layout of the course. We used up almost 150 cones.
Gus, was 150 cones satisfactory? It would save me 100 miles of driving my [10 mpg] pickup if I didn't have to borrrow any A.M.E.C. cones. Please let me know.
I do think the max cap should be at 40 cars (right now we have 35 and 4 more people pending).
Don't forget the last minute dropout number that will certainly occur. I think if 40 say they will show, count on 35 anyway.

Case in point: I myself had every intention of running at the RAL rallycross a couple weekends ago in NH. I had just bought a used 18' dual axle trailer and this would be my first trip with it. Although I worked on it all week to get it ready, the brakes were not even considered [it's only 5 years old]. I found out too late that the trailer brakes did not work at all. Pulled the drums at 7:00 Friday night only to find all 8 shoe linings had fallen off the shoes. Game over. :(

That's about right if things are ran smoothly. Just a note, please try to get here as early as possible so when we have everyone checked in, we can go right ahead.

p.s. We are going with NER SCCA RallyX rules. Apparently Snow Tires (DOT legal) are allowed, thus if I mistakenly put you in the modified class if you had snow tires as a mod, PM me also.

Oh, I didn't see the directions there. Sorry.

Looking very forward to meeting a lot of you folks. I'm bringing only two spectators though. Hopefully some of you can bring more out there.
