Spec c roof vent, how good is it? part 1

plucebo 03-16-2006 01:16 AM

Spec c roof vent, how good is it?
Ok so I bought myslef an 04 STi that has some sweet JDM parts on it, I want to add a spec c roof vent. Now I know all the work involved in instaling one, what I want to know is how good is it? I mean will it leak after a while, will the rubber seal go bad? If anyone out there knows anything about this could you please let me know.
willz23 03-16-2006 01:20 AM

My friend has one, it's awesome. He's had it for a couple of years now, no problems with the seal what so ever. The vent even works great during the summer it scoops in a lot of cool air. Only downfall is I don't think you can keep the vent open when you go over speeds of 40 mph.
STi-JDM 03-16-2006 02:18 AM

^^^ I don't really get it *dumba$%* uhm... is that mean you can't keep it open when you go over 40mph??
billy boi 03-16-2006 06:53 AM

okay . i have one . it works better than all four windows down . that little hole gets ALOT of air into the cabin . and I went 60mph and it was fine . the warning label says 50mph is the limit but I went 60mph and saw no type of wobble or shaking at all . Very sturday piece
enewtabie 03-16-2006 07:04 AM

Its a factory subaru piece,so you know it's going to be made good..I've had mine open at 80mph with no problem..It's nice in the summer. You don't have to run the A/C.I routinely keep my open over 40mph.
jam69007 03-16-2006 07:09 AM

where do you buy them from? the stealership?
enewtabie 03-16-2006 07:20 AM

No,you have to get them from a jdm importer. The company I got mine from is no longer in business, but there are other vendors who can.
95sti 03-16-2006 07:30 AM

I have one and its great. I have gone 70-80 mph with it no problems. It gets noisy after 50 so I usually close it above that anyway. It directs the air pretty much right down on you when you're moving. My car is a '95 and still no leaks with all original seals.
coolblue05 03-16-2006 09:19 AM

The label says that you cannot open it while traveling at speeds of 40 or greater as it puts stress on it. Just open it up before you reach that speed and you will be fine. If it is already open, higher speeds shouldn't be a problem.
jdmej20 03-16-2006 09:35 AM

Here's mine...

I Love this vent...it blows soo much air when I'm driving...I never have to have my windows down. the other guy is right, it blows more air then having all 4 windows open.
living4surf 03-16-2006 09:40 AM

it should be fine up to almost any speed that you would be travling on a road you just shouldn't open or close at higher speeds. this would put stress on the plastic handle.
06WRXTR 03-16-2006 09:49 AM

is the a tutorial how to install one?
dangerousatom 03-16-2006 09:51 AM

I have one as well. It definetly rocks!! It is a major bug vaccum though.....I made a stainless steel mesh screen ( same mesh as the STI fog covers ) that pops in and out to keep the lil buggers from getting in......nuthing like having a pissed off hornet come in your car at 75mph on I-95 during rush hour  it cuts down the wind only a lil bit.......if anyone wants one -$10 shipped or wants me to put up a pic I can do PM or post

You can get the vent from www.rallispec.com cost a lil over $400

Its quite an easy install I did mine in the driveway in 4 hours....with a jig-saw.....No direction or templets taking my time and being real carful....I could do it in less than 2 hours easy now
enewtabie 03-16-2006 10:54 AM

yeah..post a pic please..Thanks

anyone know how much a proffessional install would be?
9vapors 03-16-2006 12:09 PM
anyone know how much a proffessional install would be?
No but here is some info from the www.Rallispec.com website, it can be seen by going to the site, then to products and reading the FAQ on the spec C roof vent:

What is the purpose of the roof vent?
The roof vent is necessary for rally cars to provide adequate ventilation to the driver and co-driver. Most rally cars have no A/C so any extra air flow is welcome on hot events.

What is the best way to install this roof vent kit?
The best way to install this would be to replace the roof panel with the factory STi RA roof panel that has the vent hole already cut out. We can supply this panel. This requires removing the front & rear glass and drilling out all of the spotwelds and then sealing and rewelding the new panel in the same manner.

Sounds rather complicated and expensive, is there an alternative?
Many customers have simply cut the hole out with a jigsaw. They use the inner mounting bracket as a template to determine the shape and location of the hole from the inside of the car. It is not necessary for an extremely clean cut because the weatherstrip covers up the sheet metal edge. Care must be taken to ensure the hole is correctly located and that the roof is not scratched or distorted in the process.

What about the opening in the headliner?
This can be cut carefully with a razor blade using the mounting bracket and the inner vent trim panel as a template. Again, the inner trim covers the cut edge so absolute perfection is not necessarily a requirement.

Does this kit come with nozzles for directing the air inside the car?
No, as it is not something that was on the factory cars. We can supply a Prodrive roof vent kit that has such nozzles.
dangerousatom 03-16-2006 04:19 PM

A proffessional install would be $150 - $200, but its rilly easy to do yourself...you have to cut the hole...that is it

I could poast up a how-to-install if people are that scared................ but it would be from memory so I cant say I wont miss something

Here are pic's of the vent with my mesh. The mesh just pops in and out from inside the car, you dont have to take appart the vent at all. I have one extra made up at the moment ...so first come first serve!

I saw a rear mirror replacement, that someone had done here, that looked OEM (probably was the same company) that had compass, temp, and two map lights. My wife wants the temperature, and the map lights looked like a bonus to me.

Found it.

Depends on if you have any other windows down/cracked open. I will usually lower the rears an inch or so to get more airflow through the vent. When they're all up, at 80mph, its quieter than having the windows down, but obviously it does make some noise.
STi-MAN 03-18-2006 03:32 AM

you can have it open at way faster speeds then 40 mph... you just dont want to open it while going around 40, the sudden force of air might rip it off.. but if left open it can stay open at higher speeds.

Now that's pretty cool! I wonder what fitment would be like on our cars since that is a universal piece...
vf22-wrx 03-18-2006 03:19 PM

yeah you'd probably have to get new headliner because it looks smaller than the map lights but who knows....I just know that new headliner requires windshield removal in order not to fold and ruin it...I say stick with OEM...I bet it's worth it and I want one SOOOOO badly

Looks like your rubber seal is upside down...

I had mine that way as well originally, but it leaked. Flipped it and no worries in HEAVY rainstorms. Once you flip it, you'll see how it provides a great seal with the lid from the inside.

Noise is cut down as well. Nice idea with the mesh, though!

Johnny, the headliner dosn't have to be removed to install the roof vent. You can rest it on the package rack and the front seat head rests. There are also ways you can get the headliner out by playing with the seat positions

For those of you wanting a step by step installation, I ran across this a while ago.

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3665

For those of you that have done this, do you attempt to paint the now freshly exposed edge of the sheet metal, before installing the gasket? What kind of mesh is the guard made out of? Thanks.

PS I updated my earlier post with the OEM like replacement mirror with map lights and temperature for those interested.
SinisterSkube 03-19-2006 06:54 PM

i hate my sunroof
dangerousatom 03-19-2006 07:08 PM

There is rilly no need to paint the edge. The gasket that the kit has, has some wickedly sticky sealer on the inside where the freshly cut roof comes in contact with it. But, a lil autobody primer shot into a dixie cup and brushed on with a water color brush or sum sort would not hert....that is what I did. Also I would recomend some extra sealer ( 3M door gasket sealer in a RED tube ) just for good mesure, on the roof gasket and the thin gasket on the vent itself.....after time in the sun the vent gasket will shrink a lil and a gap will form, You can see it in the pic of mine here

For the people who installed themselves, did you remove all the headlining like the DIY said or is there a shorter way? I've wanted it for a while now just seems like a lot of work for a n00b like me.
dangerousatom 03-19-2006 07:32 PM

Remove the head liner.....A-B-C pillers out, slide both the seats back and recline all the way. Taking off the head rests helped a lil too

I removed with no wrinkels or creases :D ......head liner only takes like 15-20min to remove
scrwrx 03-19-2006 07:42 PM

so basically with an entire day free and patience I should be able to do this? I really want one since they equal teh s3x :D thanks for the info
Alizarin 03-19-2006 09:47 PM

I have an 04, so things may be different from the previous models... but I was surprised how stiff the headliner was. People made it out to be really flimsy, but for my case at least, it supported itself off the parcel shelf and resting on the seats.
InfamousDX 03-19-2006 11:36 PM

Do you HAVE to remove the headliner to install? I have no problems cutting the hold in the roof but the interior install concerns me... or is it seriously that easy? Someone do a write-up if they're bored!
