SportsCar STX choices part 1

trhoppe 08-09-2004 09:15 PM

SportsCar STX choices
So I got my SportsCar today and was reading their national championship picks for this year. Not surprisingly (but incorrectly  ) they are picking Mikey to take it, but what I don't understand is their list of "challengers". Sure KC, Josh and I are listed, but Courtney Cormier is "at the top of that list"  along with Richard West, Karl Asseily and Toby Larsson   Who the hell are those guys?

-Tom
makofoto 08-09-2004 09:22 PM

Karl and Toby, along with Toby's wife Beverlee ... are some of our top STX drivers in the Los Angeles area. Toby and Beverlee switched from a WRX last year to a BMW this year. Beverlee can beat her husband! Karl is very fast (especially in his JDM EVO 7) ... they will all be sharing the BMW. It will be very interesting to see how they fare against the WRX's ... my allegiance is split between being a WRX driver and a L.A. driver ... :-)

Karl won SM2 last year in the L.A. area ... Beverlee was 2nd in STX, Toby 3rd ...
trhoppe 08-09-2004 09:40 PM

Hmm 4 seconds off the pace will be my guess

-Tom
jcroy66 08-09-2004 09:41 PM

I'm pretty stoked about being listed in STXL as "Challenges could come from Jennifer Croy...".

I guess now we have to go, huh??
Storm 08-09-2004 10:34 PM

That's because you're already registered. and had a decent finish at a 'tour event. They didn't mention my name to upset Butts or Fauth only because I'm not regestered....... ;)

I want my 'SportsCar was wrong' shirt. Didn't get mine last year. :D

Tom, I'm surprised you, of all people, bring this up after the smackdown you got last year.... this is ANYONES game at the big show.

May the best driver win. :)

I'm registered but need to renew my SCCA membership :)

Sean Ross is gonna co-drive with me, and Pam Eames will be running my car in ESPL. Funny part is, she'll be running against Kelly Mosgrove again (the battled for STSL top honors 2 years ago.) Looks like Curtis will run my car in SM unless he can find a good tire warming spot for Tues/Wed.

Not really. How much faster are you then Storm ;)

Edit: and I forgot about ESP for fastest. Its definetly going to be between Phil and Kiko/Hartman. If phil is on 275s then I'll give the edge to him, but phil on 245 hoosiers vs ESP STIs on 275 V710s is going to be a tossup :)

-Tom
Draken 08-10-2004 12:47 PM

I can't find anybody with 710s in stock. Tire Rack won't have them until Sept 9th, and Vilven will not answer their phone. I've been a loyal Kumho runner for a couple years, but looks like they are driving me towards their competition. Guess I'll see if 275 Hoosiers fit.

Honestly when I see this attitude toward everyone else I hope we see it again.

Funny there was no mention of Todd.
zzyzx 08-10-2004 01:06 PM

Well, I do have one prediction for Topeka that you can all benefit from: it's going to rain. If our weather so far this year is any indication of how it's going to be in September, you could say the chance for rain at Nats is at least 50% higher than a normal year.

- Steve Sulatycki

P.S. Take note of this, Mr. Hoppe. ;)
it's going to rain.

Oh I'm ready with "rain" tires this year (full tread azenis). Not going to repeat last years 3 seconds off the pace on dry weather tires. I was by far the fastest on KDs, does that count??
Honestly when I see this attitude toward everyone else
What attitude? They list someone who was 4 seconds back of josh sortor as "likely to be a contender" puhlease!

If it was me predicting I would say that mikey would be "favored to win" with KC, josh and I as "top condenders" but then courtney also being able to take it. It also all depends on the courses make it a fast transitiony course and the Type argghs and minis would be favored. Sorry, but you have to be better then 5th or 6th at a national event for me to consider you a "national championship contender" ;)

-Tom
cocky bastard
jcroy66 08-10-2004 01:25 PM

While I hate the thought of agreeing with Tom ( ;) ), my thought is that someone who was 3rd in STX at a regional level seems an unlikely person to be listed as a contender for a national open title. Unless at least one of the following is true:
1. He missed a bunch of the local events because he was going to national events.
2. He was using the local events purely to practice different techniques for national events.
3. He's improved a lot since last year.
4. It's a very, very strong STX region (which LA might be, I don't know).

As for Beverlee, it appears I have my work cut out for me. At the San Diego Tour, it looks like she was less than a tenth back from Sortor.
dwx 08-10-2004 01:35 PM
Are you doing the ProSolo Finale? Those ProSolos can put your car out of commission if you're not careful... ;)

Seriously, dwx is my bet for the fastest autoX Scooby in the nation.
Yeah Jack I'll be at the finale. The car will hopefully be running a little better by then with some new toys perhaps.

I won't be on the 245 Hoosiers for the finale and Nationals. I'll be using either 265/45/16 V710s or 275/45/16 A3S04s.

We'll see how I stack up against the ESP STIs. The only tour event I've ever done is Peru this year and I stunk. I hope it's not DG syndrome. He does well in the Pros but is just too inconsistent most of the time in the tour events.

Phil
zzyzx 08-10-2004 01:39 PM

I drive a WRX with an EJ257 block and V8 RA heads. I also have a 6MT, so it's a lot like an STI only it's not an STI. I also have a big wing on the back. :)

It's an SM car so it runs a different turbo and more boost and makes a bit more power than a STI. It's also a bit lighter, around 3000 lbs. I've been running 245 Hoosiers this year for tires, but my current set is just about done and I'm going to move up to 265 or 275s.
zzyzx 08-10-2004 02:01 PM

Ah, I was wondering how those 16" Koseis would clear the Brembo brakes... guess that's not an issue. :) Did you get your wheels yet?

- Steve Sulatycki
dwx 08-10-2004 02:15 PM

Nah I haven't ordered them yet. I ran into some extra expenses and I'm gonna order them this winter. I have some 16x8 +45 rims I'm going to use in the meantime and hopefully with about a 10mm spacer they will clear in the rear.
Mike: How do you rate Kiko's chances against the "normal ESP" rides...and the Evo's that have run this year?

Chris H.
Kiko and his car are both capable of winning ESP this year. I've only seen a couple Evo's run this year and Kiko was still beating them on street tires. And honestly most of the events that I went to this year have been wash-outs. Bottom-line, Kiko has a car that can win, and he can drive it. So, time will tell.
I've only seen a couple Evo's run this year and Kiko was still beating them on street tires.
No disrespect intended to Kiko -- I know he's a very good driver -- but take a look at his performance at the DC ProSolo. He was cone-troubled on his only dry runs, but if we give him his best scratch times, he comes up with a 55.526 there. That compares favorably to the ESP-winning Evo's time of 54.871, given that Kiko was on ST tires -- some might say Kiko was very impressive -- but I wouldn't characterize it as "still beating them on street tires."

We'll see. I watched Eric Stemler run his Evo this past weekend at Forbes. He was fast - real fast. Had the right setup. His car experienced some of the issues mine does with a stiff suspension, and he also needs a front diff. - burning the front wheel around the turns... losing time. That said, he PAX'd 3rd overall, right on the tail of Madarash and Jorgensen. Good company to be in. Not often that the 3 top PAX spots go to ESP in an event with 185 drivers that includes many multi-time National champs.
Karl Asseily and Toby Larsson Who the hell are those guys?

Hmm 4 seconds off the pace will be my guess

-Tom
You know Tom, I used to have a LOT of respect for you, until I see this elitist BS!!!!!! What is with you? I might not be a national driver like you, nor might ever be. But I sure did some good driving in my earlier years, beating my old buddy Peter "PD" Cunningham more often than not in our Solo II days. And look where he is today - so that shows I did have SOME skills when I was in my 20's. It got to the point that we just had to show up to an event for the others in the class to jokingly begin to pack up. But we NEVER talked like you are doing!!!! And I wonder how you took it when you first started to come out, and someone might have had that very same attitude towards you? And as you know nothing about Karl or Toby (and act as if you don't even care to cuz you are just soooooooo good), you just might end up eating your words.

So, you are the BIG GUN now in class, but how long did it take you to get there????? Well, a bit of history about Karl. He only started racing in about 2000 with a his brand new //M Coupe. I was beating him with my Z3 Coupe at every event that first year, both in BMWCCA and SCCA. By the next year we were about even. The year after that he was creaming me, as well as about the top driver in both LA and SD BMWCCA and was in a 2 way battle for tops in ASP here in So Cal. Then he became one of the more sought after BMWCCA instructors as well as one of the top track instructors for TrackQuest driving schools. Now he is doing extremely well in his JDM EVO VII in SM. This guy just LOVES racing, and has natural talent! Something many of us need a better setup car to compensate for. And he has come quite far in so short a time. You are selling him too short, and any general knows NOT to understimate an opponent. Seems you don't though.
What attitude? They list someone who was 4 seconds back of josh sortor as "likely to be a contender" puhlease!
THAT ATTITUDE!!!!!!! So someone was slower at an event. Does not mean he won't be faster at the next? Or that he, like Karl has shown, won't improve every time he goes out? You must think only you get better - NOT! As much as I LOVE Sube's, I hope he puts a big hurt on you bubba!!!!!! Thank goodness there are still cool guys like KC around.

Ok, before this blows into a head on head flame war....

Let cooler heads prevail, mmmkay?

It was pointed out to Tom what he said was a bit over the top.... hopefully we can all leave it at that. (What's this... me trying to stop instead of incite a flame war??? Vaca musta done me good) but I too remember a time when it was asked 'who is this Tom Hoppe guy and where did he come from?' at the 1st ProSolo he attended.

No one heard of him... and he beat some of the best drivers... after only auto-xing also for about a year. So, Karl & Toby just as well as could put the hurt on Tom and all of us becuase they all started around the same time.

What it comes down to is this: we do this (auto-x) for FUN. Sometimes things get said and what we read weren't as intended when typed. Welcome to das internetten.

Let's not start a fight over this... it's only talk, and at Nats, all head out to have some BEER. Mmmkay? :D
