What this proves is that you dont have to have a clue to post whore on BMW forums!
Go back there and post a thread on how your 99m3 'killed' an STi above 100 mph on your local interstate highway.

There will be plenty of exceptions. I think you should have to submit all your posts through a filter. If they pass, they will actually be posted. Otherwise, you will be temporarily banned for 3 days.
Stuff from our BMW fanatic would obvsiouly not pass through the BS filter.

No offense to Neary as he's a very good driver, but he never beat me in STU locally down in Philly Region driving a friend of mine's STi. It wasn't fully prepared either(coilovers, swaybar, exaust). Too bad the bastard sold the car on me! Well, it wasn't my car anyway so he did what worked for him.

Nice job at the Philly event. Hopefully warmer weather will help me a lot. I could not get my two wheels to drive the car forward at all. I don't suspect this Sunday will be any better (high of 38F), but I am going to try a different tire. The new Falkens don't seem to like the cold as much as the old ones. We'll see what Yokahamas do.

Is McCall setting up the RX8 for STU? He and MeLinda were talking about it the other week when they were up this way. I wonder what a well-prepped RX8 could do against the M3s and the STEvos. Having never driven an RX8, I have no idea what they are or aren't capable of.

I've never met Jason, and he drives his SM Firebird alot at local events. Not sure of he is going to co-drive with Paul or build an RX8. However, there will be a very well prepped, very well driven 8 coming from our region. I'll give you a hint, it ran BS this year, was white, and trophied ;)
FYI he was not far off the pace at our last event from the STU contigent. Of course, I also out pax'd him at the event before that  But hey, GS has a soft pax.

Jason and MeLinda are runing their RX-8 in STU and Jeremy Johnson is co-driving my car this year. He is an EVO guy so I have pulled him away from the dark side. We will both prolly suck this year.
Two weeks ago I practiced with Hanchey and Fair and got p0wn3d in their M3. =/ Granted he was on fresh 615's and I was on dead 615's but it was still a 0.5 second split on a 25 second course.

[Blatant Generalization]
Drivers being equal on tight courses forcing STEvos out of the boost often: other cars besides STEvos can win STU; otherwise, never.
[/Blatant Generalization]
But seriously, the M3 is a superior and lighter chassis and is allowed to run more tire by the rules. BUT, the STEvos have a huge advantage on powertrain and drivetrain and with allowed modifications most all of their handling issues can be fixed. I think they will run very close with one another with top drivers.. on concrete anyway..

The biggest problem the M3 has is fitting those tires. If I remember from one of the guys building a budget STU M3 you have to roll the fenders just to fit 255's.

Well, at least in my case, I had to remove the rubber thingy in the rear, and rolled the fenders to make 245-40-18 with 18x8.5 +48 (street use) to fit. I am not sure if it's necessary for my 245/45-17, since I've already done the fenders prior purchasing the 245/45s.
| z3coupe | 02-16-2006 06:01 AM |
I am running 245/40/17 AD07's with 17x8.5 5Ziggen GN+ wheels with No rubbing problems at all, and no rolled fenders. And I even have softer sprung KW V3 coilovers and still no rubbing. Its probably your 18" wheel/tire combo having problems.
As for RX8's in STU? Guess just like a Miata, if you can carry the speed in the turns, it will do good. But I recently test drove a 6spd, and boy, it was like WHEN was the power going to kick in? Once you get used to turbos, and the "push" (rush) you get, all else pales. Even the Cooper Works Mini with the SC felt lame in the "grin" department. Neither were no where near as much a thrill as even a N/A //M3. Even my old 79 RX7 felt faster than the RX8 - but then it had a 4 barrel carb on it that I modded into a manual secondary - so that even at idle I could open up all 4. Combined with the 76 RX3-SP intake (different runner paths), dumping the pedal at speed was like an automatic downshifting! It had whoa factor there

Honestly, the RX-8's are way down in the power department. I ran several times against Mark Sipes at a mirrorcross and even with a crappy launch he still couldn't really pull away.
I think they have a lot of potential though and will be right there at the top of the heap.

I keep hearing about this and I don't see how it is possible. The 265 Yok is huge and the M3 doesn't have much room. I would love to see pictures of these on an e36 M3. If I recall correctly they only legal fender rolling in STU is of the inner lip and not pushing the fender out (flared).

I'm aware of their handling prowess. But I'm stating, against my RS, Mark's nationally prepped 8 couldn't keep up in a straight line. I've also seen mark put down some suprising times. But that has little to do with the power or lackthereof contained by the RX-8.
And if we want to toot horns...

Oh come on Jeff. That's not exactly a fair comparison. How about a miata versus an elise ;)

Hey guys,
First time caller, long time listener.
We have definitive data that spells out what's going to happen this year. We bought a DL-1. Unfortunately like Paul said, he was on dead tires, but here is what the data shows:
Long. accel:
STI: .8g and -.7g
M3: .45g and -1.0g
Lat accel:
STI: .95g
M3: 1.1g (fresh tires)
Playing the runs together shows without guessing that in a slalom the M3 is faster, steady state turns the cars are about the same and through relatively tight transitions the M3 is .5s faster through just three gates! Personally I think the Evo would narrow that gap since they appear to transition better. Either way, it will be a fun year. Depending on the course, each has its strengths. Any pivot cones and the awd cars with their power usually make up for the grip. RX-8 will probably have even higher lateral numbers and worse acceleration maybe better braking? We'll have the DL-1 on Evos and RX-8s probably by June. Rat Finkel??

I don't recall losing to any STS2 cars so your arguement really doesn't hold water there.

Looks like Paul could brake harder. How much negative camber are you running Paul?

Actually, it looks like BMW brakes harder.

Friction circles are called circles for a reason. I dont have a DL-1 but I have no problem matching my braking gs to my lateral gs on the gtech rr. I dont see any reason why the gtech would only be way off on braking.

I drove Paul's car. There was a noticable difference in braking performance. He said they needed to be bled. On that day, it was different, but that's not to say STI brakes with the right pads, etc aren't capable of -1.0g. This was just one day on one 24 second course. Your results will vary. :)
One thing I'd like to do at our next practice might be to set up a 60-0 and let people use the DL-1 to record it. Or a 0-60-0. Might be interesting. There's a 3000' runway just waiting to be rented here...

Alex,
At the time I had the DL-1 mounted and recording I was running -4.0 camber in the front. Also about an hour earlier Brian and I lapped the car so many times we lost the brakes almost completely so they weren't at their best.
After the DL-1 was removed I continued to test on the skidpad and recorded inside tire (245/45-17 Falken 615) temps as much as 35 degrees higher than the middle and outside so I reset the front camber to about -3.2 and got the tires temps almost even across the face of the tire (a couple degrees hotter on the inside). Although I did not have the DL-1 installed at this time I knew my front grip increased as I was faster in the skidpad (my RPM's were higher) and the car felt stuck down. I also developed a very loose rear end on corner exit. =) I could easily throttle over steer now, too much in fact. Even with the rear bar full soft and rebound set full soft I could step the car out at will and not even full throttle. So now I need to add rear camber (currently 0.0), I think about -1.5 should put me in the ballpark.
As for the braking, they were already toast and I never did any full braking while I had the DL-1 mounted so there aren't any good numbers for me. I am sure on fresh tires and after replacing the fluid my braking will be even with or damn close to the M3.
-Paul

did you correct for chassis roll, dive and squat? was the bmw peak instantaneous g's higher then the sti, thus the faster slalom and transition times? how about car placement in those transitions? i mention this because kC and i saw similar differences in data when we logged his rx-8 when we both drove it. the data logger is a great tool, but like any tool it has to be used properly for the greatest benefit. for example, raw data indicated nearly 1.4g's steady state in the BS rx-8. corrected it was not quite 1.1g's. it also showed that i was faster in the offset slalom. my approach to the slalom was entirely different then kC's, and despite running nearly identical times (well, if you throw out his missed 1-2 upshift  ) i was nearly .5 seconds quicker in that one spot. if you ignored us driving the same car you'd think the car i drove sucked under braking but slalomed awesome and that the car kc drove was awesome in trail brake corner entry but sucked in slaloms. not saying this is the case with the data you presented, but without knowing more i have to treat this as nothing more then interesting.
