There was more to Hirvonen's exit from SWRT than is believed by the populous.
I have heard a number of the other things about his departure but the reality is also that he was not showing the speed to be in the top 5 either. Typically was only high in the standings if other drivers had off's, not because he got himself there.
Yes Petter, Colin (not called McCrash for nothing! ) et al didn't finish races until they got a little more disiplined but the reality is also that they showed like Chris did this year, glimpses of their potential by also being very very fast almost from the beginning.

Also, that was a time when the points system rewarded wins over consistancy. Now you have to do well consistantly to stay up in the points.

Yes but you need to be consistently in the top 5 not in the next 5 like Hirvonen was.......

John Felstead described Hirvonen's situation the best.

So what was the inside story on Hirvonen? Anyone?

What Tora said I think sums it up pretty fairly- can't criticize Travis or Ken or SoA's decision. They're going to do what they think works for them, and they all deserve the best of luck, and hopefully it will draw even more attention and $ to the sport.
But the fact remains, here is yet another year where Richard(s) finish first on a figuratively shoe-string budget with what to show in return? When is somebody going to step up to the plate and reward rich talent, phenomenal driving, experience, and an overall good team?
Maybe it wouldn't be so hard for others to swallow if there was a simultaneous press release stating something similar from Subaru of Canada...
either way, I'll still be watching and rooting for all Subaru's.

The word was that Mikko's agent and SWRT had a severe butting of the heads. Most (about half) of the works drivers we collecting a paycheck, which had something to do with it.You could easily say that Duval, Gardemiester, Kresta, Bengue, H. Solberg, Carlsson, Johansson, Passonen, Loix, Robert, Atkinson, Hirvonen were not collecting a paycheck.
The other was Finland 2004. This was the rally that Mikko was told to go balls out. Well, he went balls out and hit a guardrail at his home event. Not a very impressive start. Felstead mentions that Hirvonen had a great WRC start with SWRT, and outpaced similar drivers in the same situations as he had been in. He was a successful driver by numbers sake, his mature drive in Austraila showed.
Keep in mind that Hirvonen was a quick replacement for the late Burns. The return of Burns to SWRT didn't really follow the 'young driver development' program that SWRT and other teams are focused on today.
Wow. We are WAAAY off topic now. Sorry guys!
