Swap stereo bulbs with LED part 2

CaptainMorgan 11-01-2002 11:09 AM

The Autodynamic 4 bulb clusters are shiate like Malico said. I'm trying to figure out a way of installing an array of small 3mm LED's behind the gauge face, but it may involve removing the needles which I am very hesitant to do. But it will also give me a chance to get the green filter off. As far as the LEDs that come with their own socket, these wont fit in the regular bulb sockets. They're too big. You'll either have to trim them way down or solder them in. The HVAC control cannot be removed easily. The control wire for the heating adjustment (or is it the vent control) either way its a small guide wire like on a model airplane and is bent arounda control arm. Its not gonna move. But you can take the whole damn thing apart in the console, most important is to get the face off so you can see in. At this point doing the radio has been the easiest part and has worked the best.

ScreaminFast: Which are you talking about? all White LEDs glow pure white.
IggDawg 11-01-2002 11:16 AM

Here's somethign that would go REALLY nicely with the cobalt/electric blue LEDs we're using:

Malico 11-01-2002 11:29 AM

I have an experiement I am going to be trying this weekend, will post the results here.

If it does not work I am stuck waiting for the parts from LEDTronics.

Whatever you all do, DO NOT BUY THE AUTODYNAMIC ONES!!!!
CaptainMorgan 11-01-2002 12:18 PM

I really dont like those overlays. They make it look too bright, and if you have the carbon fiber trim, it would look even worse.

Malico: I just ordered some new LED's from nichia.com #NSPB546BS. These are single bulb ones, rather large I might add. I hope they work a lot frelling better than those damn Autodynamic ones. Actually. It was funny. I was working on it last night and had one hooked up to a 9v battery. two of the bulbs blew and a little flame shot out of it.

Actually, they're not all perfectly white. These LEDs use phosphor coatings or something to filter out unwanted color to achieve white, so there can be some variation; I don't this this is what he's talking about though :D
ScreaminFast 11-01-2002 03:38 PM

I was talking about these:

http://www.netdisty.net/ds/WF150/

I was debating putting those in, but i wondered if they'd match the defi bf gauges, which I think are white...
Malico 11-01-2002 06:05 PM

LOL!!! Fire Fire!!!

I read somewhere else that someone used those LEDTronics bulbs and they worked well.

LEDTRONICS

Just to clear up the LEDTRONICS stuff. I ordered the blue 4.5mm bulbs from them on October 22nd. They told me 4-6 weeks for delivery and they got to me yesterday. That's like 10 days! So maybe they just got more in stock and if you haven't recieved them and ordered them expect them soon. Here is the thread with pics of people who have installed the LEDTRONICS bulbs in the dash and HVAC controls: The 4.5mm ones fit in all of these sockets with no modification, just direct bulb replacement.http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=2823004#post2823004
verbal 11-02-2002 03:07 PM

I called Ledtronics yesterday. She said that they won't be getting those bulbs in until Nov. 25th.
BlueWRXagon 11-03-2002 10:24 AM

I'm a dummy

Could someone please tell me how to tear up all this stuff inside my car? As in, how do you remove the: gauge cluster, the HVAC, the radio...to access the bulbs?
I've read a few lines here and there scattered throughout the thread about how to do it, but could someone please be a bit more specific?

Also, how many bulbs total for the entire setup? (stereo, gauges, HVAC, foglight/cruise control?)

Much appreciated! Thanks!

Jimmy
CaptainMorgan 11-03-2002 10:30 AM

I'm going to take my console apart today, I'll post a writeup here, with a few pics maybe. And I think Malico and I are going to collaborate on a submission to ScoobyMods.
Malico 11-04-2002 07:19 AM

Yup, I plan to created a very detailed step by step write up on this and run it by Captain before it hits Scooby.

I am just waiting for the LEDTronics bulbs to come in and to get a Digital Camera.
CaptainMorgan 11-06-2002 11:35 AM

I just got my nichia LED's in! Man these things are sweet! They have a nice wide view angle, are plenty birght and are a single bulb! They are very diffuse and dont have that annoying bright spot in the middle or a halo around it. its over all light is good coverage behind tha gauges. I just need to position them so that they light up the gauge properly. best part is, if you order 10 they are only $3 each!
John #555 11-09-2002 08:07 AM

question for those who have changed the stock radio lamps, Captain ;):

Would I be able to use these LED's on the radio circuit board, including LCD?

Ive already ordered for the dash/HVAC from LEDtronics, so i figure i should use their LED to get the same light output. Also, these are 12V so no need for resistors:D Mainly, i'm concerned with the height. Do you think .58 inch will fit?
Could you share what size LED for what part? eg. 3mm for buttons, 5mm for radio, etc. (i'm guessing)
Thanks everyone for excellent posts!
CaptainMorgan 11-10-2002 06:17 PM

No, I think that those would be too long and too wide to fit comfortably in the stereo if the specs on that diagram are in inches which I think they are. Also the stereo runs at 9.5v so those LED's would be almost too dim to see. I used all 5mm LED's from radio shack in the stereo. I think that they have an overall length of about 1cm. Plus you'd still have to solder them in.
IggDawg 11-10-2002 06:36 PM

I decided to go with red instead of blue. I used some of my SRP touch-up paint to paint the bulbs in the stereo. The HVAC bulbs will get too hot, but the bulbs in the stereo are simnply too sall to generate any respectable heat. I've driven like this for several days now, and there's no sign of fade or bubbling in the paint. And it looks AWESOME. So if you have a WRB car and have ssome touch-up paint, give this a shot. If you don't like it you can always use some "Oops!" to get it off.

John #555 11-11-2002 05:51 PM

Thank you sirs!!

HVAC was easy with LEDtronics 4.5mm, and now i'm working on the radio... i'm leaning towards using the paint or the covers (condoms) since i'd rather not deal with soldering.

Is there any way to change the clock lights? i might just put Rev-Lite if i can't 'fix' the clock...:D I think that would be a good spot for shift light. What do you think?

IggDawg, I'm with you on this... RED:devil: baby!
Malico 11-12-2002 07:43 AM

Well got some good news and bad news...

Good News :

Got my LEDTronics bulbs in, installed them... Look DAMN sweet! Nice and smooth, no real brightspots.

Bad News :

Got in a wreck with my WRX this past Sunday, going into the shop today. When I get it back I will being work on the writeup.

As for news on the writeup... I will add info on just doing the bulb covers for people who wish to do those. That is fairly simple to do. Got my digital cam, just need to get my car back now.
CaptainMorgan 11-12-2002 09:54 AM

Dude. Sorry to hear about your loss. What happened?
CaptainMorgan 11-12-2002 09:55 AM

John #555 I've taken the clock assembly apart. The LCD in there has its own light built into the glass. No luck on changing it.
Malico 11-12-2002 11:43 AM

The only way I can see changing the clock would be with a blue film over the front...

It was pouring rain, some guy decided to switch lanes coming in behind me not noticing I was there. I attempted to avoid a rear ending but the guy in front of me stopped for some reason, and in the rain there was not enough room to stop. It was only a 5-10 MPH hit, no one was hurt, no damage to his car. My car took the brunt of the hit, grill, bumper and hood are toast. The radiator support bar buckled slightly enough to where I am using a bungee cord to keep the rad forward enough so the top hose does not touch the alternator pully. It could have been a lot worse, like engine or frame damage, so I am glad that did not happen.

So the damage is not serious, she will be good as new soon. Just the $500 deduct on my insurance hurts a tad.
CaptainMorgan 11-12-2002 01:27 PM

I hope you got your tire iron and put the beat down on that guy! Kidding. Seriously though, I'm sorry to hear that, cause I know that already I've had my fair share of close calls with unattentive drivers. When you're driving around your beater its not so bad, but when you've just purchased a 20k+ car thats noteven two months old.

At least no one was hurt. I hope you get it fixed and back on the road soon!

BTW, I've ordered more LED's, yeah I know, I've probably stuck about $200 into this damn light project now, but these new ones are 4.5 candelas each, plus more of the wide angle ones from nichia.com. One day it will be finished!
Malico 11-12-2002 01:30 PM

lol how much are they? Let me know how they turn out!
CaptainMorgan 11-12-2002 03:29 PM

No hot spots, even distribution, butthey are only ½ candela, so they are a bit dim and I need more! Pretty cheap too, order 10 and they are only $3 each and free shipping.
ScoobyStew 11-12-2002 03:44 PM

CaptainMorgan-

Where are these brighter ones from? Could you post a link? Are they replacements for the 4.5mm ones you got from LEDTRONICS or something else?
John #555 11-12-2002 03:51 PM

Thanks for the replies...

I've tried the LEDtronics WF150's (12/14V) red's and it came out too dim on the dash. HVAC was little better but still not bright enough. I'm gonna try the 5V next. i hope 5V's dont burn out too quick.

for the radio, i got all the green covers off and left with orange/yellow lights. I'm thinking about putting red film over the LCD and lense thing (clear plastic) in the faceplate.

I'll try the film over the clock. I think it'll be easier to change to red than blue...

Malico, I'm glad to hear the damage wasnt too serious. did you say it's time for new front bumper and grill? so many to choose from...:D
il96 11-13-2002 12:39 AM

What if..

What if Subaru produced WRX's with blue LED's already there, would everybody start putting green and red ones in ? :)

Do guys in Japan dream to replace their headlights and reflectors with US spec ones ? :)
John #555 11-13-2002 02:59 AM

so i'm not a patient man. i just couldnt wait for the LED's.
couple of pics after spending $2.50 on a sheet of red film sticker...
Photo Album
the clock was brighter than i thought. it took extra layer of film. :D Now i just need to touch up the dash bulbs.

Thanks guys, for all your input!
Malico 11-13-2002 08:11 AM

Where did you get that film, may have to add that into the writeup for the clock...

I have started the preliminary typing for the writeup, but still waiting to get my car back for pictures.
IggDawg 11-13-2002 09:31 AM

555 - what'd you finally use on the HVAC assy in those pictures. I have just rat-shack bulbs w/ aluminum foil all over the inside. and it sux0rz  . The illumination just isn't even enough. I like how yours looks.

I found it at a hobby shop in airplane section. One i got is about 6"x36" sheet. I used this for all lights for consistancy in output.
btw, i used 2 layers of film on the clock to make sure it shows red but found to be too dim during the day. I found out on the way to work this morning... I'll take off 1 layer and then post some pics
Hope this helps...

getting after market gauges to match

I see what everyone is doing here and I love it. I am waitng for my car to cross the ocean and get here. I just wanted to know if any of you got your gauges, if you have aftermarket gauges, to match the new dash color.

Thanks,
Tom
CaptainMorgan 11-15-2002 12:18 PM

Oh sweet mama! I got all my new LED's in and made these little clusters out of two wide angle and one of the 4.5 cd ones that I'll have to post a pic of. I put two of these little clusters for the speed and tach. They look fantastic! The needles glow flourescent green out to their tips now and there is an even, bright, blue light coverage all over the speedo and tach gauge. I'll get some pics when it gets dark tonight.
IA Performance 11-15-2002 12:27 PM

Just a side note on which color to choose...

If you have ever been in the newer Jettas they have the blue interior lights. It is rather hard for me to read them (25yr old). My Audis both had red lights (not amber) and they are sooooooooooo easy to read. Looks sweet too, everyone that sat in my car tripped out over them (even though they were a stock features) :)
CaptainMorgan 11-15-2002 12:48 PM

my friend has a 2001 passat and you'reright the blue is more of a purple and very hard to read. The blue form the LEDs I've been using id light and bright and makes the gauges easy to see. i say that its maybe only a little dimmer than the stock green, but not any harder to see.
ScoobyStew 11-15-2002 12:59 PM

Captain-

Could you let us know where you got your new LEDs and how you installed them (or were they just plug-ins like the LEDtronics?) when you post those pics tonight?

THanks

Thanks for the update Captain! I cant wait to see your pics/writeup;) I'd like to learn exactly how you did your dash gauges.

I see the prob with LEDtronics stuff. Ones I used were rated between 115~130 mcd...:(

I guess I gonna have to resort to some soldering work...
CaptainMorgan 11-15-2002 02:51 PM

nichia.com #NSPB546BS Super oval LED Blue 120º view angle .5cd. #NSPB500S Blue 15º view angle 4.47cd. You'll never find an LED that just "plugs in" and give you any sort of quality. LED's arent made for being a flood lamp. They are directed light sources, so you havce to make up solutions o get what you want. What I did is take the the two wide angle oval ones and mount them on either side of the high intensity one like a pitch fork, bend the leads at almost 90º angle and make sure that the high intensity one is shining right down into the reflector for the needles. This gives them an amazing glow, and the other leds provide enough light to fill the whole gauge. Make four of these, two for each gauge. Correct for voltge drop and solder those bad boys in there.

All this will be much clearer with pics.
John #555 11-15-2002 03:41 PM

Captain,
Again, thanks for the info! I hope you took some pics during the install...;)

:D btw, captain morgan in pancake mix is awesome!! best way to start the day! (i'm working thru lunch... hungry)

Yeah! 100 posts! didnt think it'd get this popular.
ObsidianRS 11-16-2002 12:27 PM

Well a lotta cars use green lights for the same reason night vision goggles choose green: green is the easiest color for the eye to see in the dark.

So, even if you have a same powered blue gauge it may appear a little darker to the eye.

Red is the hardest color to see. I am assuming (!) this is why it's used in subs: it doesn't affect your eye's in the darkness.
John #555 11-16-2002 04:15 PM

ObsidianRS, good point.

still, after switching to red the needles on speedo and tach stands out much more than before, which I really like ;) I havent seen the blue in person but based on I've read they turn GREEN on blue background which would make them much more legible. maybe i should try blue...
ObsidianRS 11-16-2002 04:21 PM

I like what VW does. They use a mix of the red/amber with the blue. The buttons and controls are red/amber and the gauges are blue. It's a very nice looking motif.

I dunno if that would be possible to do on our cars.... be neat to try, though!

If you havent already, you should try taking the radio faceplate apart (& HVAC), quite easy... You might be able to color specific controls on the radio by coloring the clear piece that distributes light to each button.

My car is still going to be in the shop till next week... bah...

I am doing the complete mod for a friend this Friday and I have my digital camera, so I will be taking tons of pics while I do his. This week I will begin the text part of the writeup.

So it should be complete within a week :)

Gettin HVAC apart?

I did my gauges the other night with blue LEDs that I had bought from a local store called Active Electronics. The dash looks sick as hell! HaHa! But.... I tried to take apart the HVAC, and I got the front cover off, and I could see the bulbs, but I could not take it apart to get to the circut board. I took the green bulb covers off and now my HVACs are orange my In dash screen is green and my gauges are blue!!! Please help. All I want to know is how to take apart the HVAC that's it!!!
verbal 11-18-2002 08:55 PM

I just got my LEDtronics bulbs in. Installed them. They are kinda dim. My speed and tach needles barely glow. And I have hotspots on the odometer, fuel, and temp gauges.

Has anybody tried the 5v lights from LEDtronics? I DO NOT want to solder them in since I have no soldering skills and don't trust myself to do it correctly. Has anybody found any blue LEDs that are nice and bright that will plug into those sockets?
austenf740 11-19-2002 02:06 AM

is anyone going to do another write up with pictures. Can someone get some pictures of how the leds are suppossed to be set-up with the resistor then put into the holes on the board? What is the best way to remove the old solder on the board when you are taking it off the old LED's.
CaptainMorgan 11-19-2002 09:17 AM

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=997

De-soldering the appropriate bulbs should be self-explanitory. Just get some solder wick.

To remove the HVAC cover, all you need to do is remove the four screws and then reach in behind the unit and twist the bulbs out, just like the gauge cluster.
CaptainMorgan 11-19-2002 09:37 AM

bah, for got to say that to remove the HVAC cover remove the dials and pop the four tabs, two on top two on bottom. The unit cannot be removed from the car, well at least without screwing something up.
