MrKeg,
I'm doing a similar sort of setup to replace my maplights, only I'm using red LED's instead of white/blue. Do you find that the resistor and LED's heat up quite a bit? I'm using a 10 ohm 2W resistor, and when testing it with a 12VDC power supply, it gets quite warm after only a minute or so . . .
BTW - I'm using 150 mcd 2.0V "Hi-Efficiency" LED's from Active Electronics.
banman,
Yeah, mine heat up alot too. I'm not sure why because the current is within spec. If I had to guess, I'd say that it is because of one or both of the following:
The wire leads are clipped very short (>2mm) so there is very little metal to disipate what little heat is generated in the LED.
Uneven adhesion in the soldering joints. Because the wire leads were so short, I was nervous about keeping the soldering iron on the LED for too long.
When I prototyped the array on a breadboard (with long wires), I didn't run into this problem. Either way, I've had mine installed for 4 months with no problems.
How many 2V LEDs do you have in series? You should be able to get 6 in series WITHOUT any resistor. If you are running 2 sets of 3 in parallel, that is a problem. Do you have an ammeter? What is the current through the LEDs?
Also, are you sure your LEDs are 150mcd? That seems very low. Check out these 8000mcds!

I've noticed the LEDs with the really high brightness are the ones with only a 5 deg view angle... Most big angle LEDs (like the 2Vs I used with 160 deg angles) are in the 200mcd range.
My guess is the LEDs are all around the same brightness, but the ones with the big angles are "spreading" the light around.
BTW: Angles are the angle from center at which the light is 50% intensity. So a 90 deg angle means at horizontal the light is half as bright as it is from directly above. So four 90 deg LEDs in a "plus" pattern will *not* light evenly light a bulb... which sucks cuz that was how I was trying to get nice even light.
I think the only way to get good even light with LEDs is to reflect the light off something opposite from what you're trying to light.

I followed your example and I am using two sets of 3 LED's in series, in parallel. The resistor is in series with both sets of LED's.
Strangely, I couldn't find ANY LED's brighter than 150.0 MCD's on Active's shelves.

That must be the problem. The blue LEDs I used are rated 3.5V at 20mA so the most that I could put in series is 3 (adds up to 10.5V). You have 2V LEDs, so you should be able to put 6 in series with no resistor.
If you have 2V LEDs in the series/parallel configuration you described, you will be drawing WAY too much current. (Therefore too much heat!)
What is the rated current for the LEDs you have? You should try putting 6 in series.

Actually, I just found that the website you referred me to has a drop-in LED replacement for the maplights (only $1.44 each!) - so I might go that route. Thanks!

Hi.
This is a good thread.
After reading the miata bulb painting tutorial, I think that is the best idea. Even if the bulb isnt red enough (it seemed to be very red in the miata guys op) i could put a condom on it. I was wondering how come everyone wants to make it complicated if painting works well? I realized that there might be a problem painting it that I dont know about. So, is there a con to painting bulbs? Bulb wears out in two years instead of 5 years or something?
thanks

Bulb painting works fine in some of the places. I painted the stereo bulbs and they came out great. The HVAC bulbs were too hot for the paint I had, but I'm sure you could get something better than subaru SRP touch-up paint. The dash lights pose a problem since there's green film on the overlays themselves. painting the bulb means less light gets through the bulb, and if your'e doing red, the green filters out even more red light. after painting the bulbs, my dash had this sickly red/green hue that I could barely see. LEDs are definitely the way to go there so you can generate enough lumens to punch through the green.

ive seen what rubbers do to the HVAC lights, they work great, so thats what I plan on doing with those bulbs. how do you (iggmod) think painting will work on the speedo tach dash type area bulb things?

I just got a WRX and i just found this thread, i really am in desperate need of changing my interior led color to something other than the generic green color that is in so many cars,
preferably red or even blue....but the problem is im not really good with taking apart my dash or electronics like some of you guys...
anyone know of a good place in southern california that would be able to do the led color conversion? and if so around how much am i looking to spend..... or maybe i can do it myself with enough directions?
please respond, thanks

Got My First lead in!!! the damn radioshack only had one led, so now I have to goto another shack to find some more.
Does anyone know the voltage of the lights in the GC8 gauges?
Im using the 3.7v 2600 blue led with a 470ohm resistor. is that too much?

condoms
I got the red bulb condoms and put them on my hvac bulbs. I used 2 and the red is very close to the red led's I have in the stereo,I'm happy with it. I may try and put a third on and see if it gets as deep red as the stereo but it's close enoough now, looks great. Does anyone know if the dash lights look as good with the condoms and if so how many per bulb etc.? Thanks,CHRIS......

I just took out my LEDs and put on the condoms... The red from the LEDs is much more pure than the condoms provide, but the condoms create a much more even light. The reason is that the instrument gauges have a green film on the inside. Since the LEDs provide only a very narrow wavelength of light, the green film doesn't have an effect, but the light bulbs (even with 2 condoms) are still effected by the film. The result is that my instrument lights border on amber, instead of the pure red. And the yellow needles are much more orange than with the LEDs.
I actually like the more red-orange lighting, since I find it easier to read than the really deep red. Plus, I like the stock "even-ness" of the light... the LEDs (although very bright at night) were too splotchy at dusk.
I think the ultimate solution is a combo of bulbs and LEDs... I'm still working on a way to weasle them both in there... hehe!

Dang, that's like the bridge of the Enterprise! "Captain!! Reports of Klingons off the port bow!!"
How'd you get the needles to use a seperate light? Does the GC8 have a specific bulb for the needles? The GDA's needles are lit by the same lights are the rest of the gauge, so getting a different needle color is damn near impossible.
Looks good man!

I was more curious than anything... I think I'll stick w/ my red-orange needles on my red gauge lighting (I like that look).
Just having poked around in my instrument cluster, I wanted to find out how the alternate color was achieved.
I'd guess Bobalouy's needles aren't just colored, since red needles lit by blue LEDs would barely light up at all (that whole color subtraction physics thing)... just like the blue dot on the HVAC controls that won't light with red lights behind it. Somehow he's getting red light to the needles alone. Maybe the GC8's got bulbs for the needles?

sperry - I didnt do anything special for the needles, my gc8 has 3 lights for the tach, and speedo, one on each side and one in between. I guess I just lucked out on the needles lighting, but they really arent bright enough, I was hoping they would turn green like captainmorgans, I've been thinking about wireing a white led to go right behind the needles.

The main reason I post this on a WRX forum is because this guy explains a few things like how to modify an LED to make the light more diffuse. I hope it helps.
By the way sperry, how did you get your yellow needles to light up red? And is there a way to make it either a soft amber like the Honda Prelude or a deep furnace red like the RSX?

I used some bright 660nm (deep furnace red.. hehe) LEDs from Ledtronics (aka netdisty). The p/n's are listed above I believe.
The color of the LEDs is so red, there's simply no yellow wavelength to light up the needles, and therefore they look red! I have since gone to red condoms (doubled up) because I like the much smoother/more even light of the diffuse bulbs. Because the bulbs give off a broader spectrum, the needles on my dash are now very orange, while the gauges are a red-orange (almost identicle to my roommate's BMW) which is actually what inspired me.
So, my gauges don't look quite as "wow" as they did with the LEDs, but they are *very* easy to read, and easy on the night vision. I found the 660nm red to be almost too red, to the point where a quick glance at the gauges wasn't long enough for the low light receptors in my eyes to figure out WTH the gauges were at... lol.
All in all, I think if you want to go red, go condoms... it's not as high-tech looking as the LEDs, but at under $10 for the condoms, and under 20 minute install time, at least give 'em a shot!

I have one question though, I still haven't figured out exactly what to do with the Odometer, did I miss a page somewhere on here that details that a little better. Stock my car has no condoms on the light for the odometer, but if I shine a light through, I can see there is a green film behind it. I tried to take the whole assembly apart, but was too afraid I would mess something up at that point, so I put some blue condoms on and it gave a teal appearance. Any suggestions? WIll the red condoms make it orange? Or did you all just leave it green? I still havent' figured out the most important one, changing the stock boost gauge color, I don't even know how to get it off of there.

Originally I used a red LED in there... it made it very red, but there was a tremendous hot spot right in the middle. So I found if you put 2 LEDs in there, but bent them so the light shines *away* from the screen, and instead reflects off the white housing for the light bulb, you get a very even light. The pureness of the red LEDs results in a very red screen, even though it's got that green film.

I even found a way to cram the original light bulb, with a red condom on it, in there with the 2 LEDs. The light's brighter, but less red... in fact it matches my orange-ish gauges pretty well.
I'm not sure this method will work with blue LEDs, since the blue wavelength is closer to the green film, you'll probably still get an aqua color, but it'll be even at least!

I am going to bump this up...
I was reading the article over at scooby mods and although its explained very well, I have never messed with anything like this... anyone in the CT area...(I would drive to Boston or LI) willing to help me... I would obviously buy all the supplies and we would figure out some sort of compensation
--David
EDIT:
OH…
I would not be doing the headunit since the reason I am doing this is that I want to put my MP3 player back in my car(its blue).
thanks again

questions
So I decided to try this myself! Well I got 3 out of 7 of the LED's in the radio to work!! But the two on the right don't light up. And the two in behind the metal plate don't work. Anyone help with how to correctly cut the anode trace on the back and solder the resistors in for the two behind the housing? I've put different LED's in the right lights and still no go. Thanks for any help

Hey I'm going to be doing this mod to my WRX this weekend. Swaping out the green for full blue. I just got my hand on about 30 Superbright Blues from Hong Kong.
My only question is how do you get to the bulbs for the main instrument pannel (speedo tach etc.) all the how too's Ive seen only cover HVAC and stereo but no one says how to get at the main gauges. I'd really just like to know the proper way to dissasemble my dash.
I'm considering doing floor lights and maybe even map lights too.
I'm really good with electronics and I'm going to try doing some things (resistor wise) a little different than the way most people have been doing it.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
I'll be taking lots of photos before and after and such.

In order to get to the instrument panel, you have to unscrew the two screws that are at the top of the front bezel. Once you have that out, you'll see three more screws that you have to take out: One at the top center, and two on the bottom sides. Depending on whether or not you have the column mounted boost gauge, it'll be very tough to take out if you do (it blocks easy access and removal) Before you're able to pull the whole instrument panel out, you have to unclip the power plugs (one at the top and two on each side....you have to really squeeze your hands in there in awkward positions to pull it out. Once that is done you can pull the whole thing off. There'll be a couple of clips holding the whole thing together in several layers, so unclip and you'll figure it out. When you're able to get to the actual fuel/water temp and speedo/tach displays, flip over and there are silver tabs that have to be bent straight in order to pull out the display dial units.
If you're planning on using the 30 LEDs for the instrument panel, you should be fine (I used approx. 17 for mine, which included the turning signals, plus a couple more for experiemental/mess ups). It is not enough for an entire blue setup in the car though. I used 6 for the HVAC, 7 for the 6-cd changer, 1 for the foglight switch, 1 for the cruise control switch, 2 for the column mounted boost gauge, and 2 or 3 for the power locks. So that's at least 36 LEDs, and even then, I have problems with unevenness, but it's fantastic at night. Had many friends compliment me on it and my sister loves it so much that she wanted me to change her white LED Honda Accord to blue, but I refused because I liked how even it was already on her car. I wish mine were as bright.
If you or anyone else have any other questions, just post here and I'm sure someone who've done this mod will respond with a knowledgable answer.

I just did the stereo and the HVAC controls with some blue superbrights... Had some problems getting all the LEDs in the stereo to work (first the diagram I was using from captain morgan's how to seemed to have two of the polarities backwards, then I had a problem were I shorted out a resister and blew the lower right LED) but now it works
I'm a little dissapointed in how dim the HVAC controls came out and I was doing a little research and foudn THIS PLACE: http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=CAR
I swear they make this stuff just for us. I'm going to put an order in to use two of the blue wide angel wedge based bulbs in the HVAC and three blue Festoon bulbs to replace my dome light and add some floor lights.
I still need to do my gagues (spedo, tach etc) as well as my fog and cruse buttons, and it seems my door has a single light to light up "AUTO" for the window button. Has anyone who's done this know how many of what type of bulbs need replacing back there? I'd like to put an order in but I dont know what else I'll need for bulbs.

Sorry twistedsymphony
Those bulbs won't fit in the HVAC. If I'm reading the page correctly, the 12 or 19 led bulbs have a 15 mm base. Good luck trying to squeeze those in a 4.5 mm socket. The best way to get the HVAC to light up well is to wire up a couple of led's (3 for each socket) with the appropriate resistor (100 ohms) and arrange it to give maximum light directionality. Not a perfect solution by any means, but they turned out okay. You're going to have the same problems with the instrument lights.
As to the window switch and power lock, it uses one surface mount green LED there, not a bulb. I wired it up so that there was an LED pointing straight up at the driver window switch and one straight up the power lock switch.
When I originally did the stereo, I had problems with the polarities that were given on CaptainMorgan's tutorial also. But if it didn't work one way, just under solder the LED and put it on the other way was my solution. No problem. Well, it's a pain in the ass to have to bring the unit back in the house to do it. (I had to do that since it was cold outside.) Any more questions, just post. I'll try to get a pic of my setup. It'll obviously look better at night. But the thing is that the blue will not show up as well on camera because the blue bleeds in the image, making it look blurry. I'll take one any way and hope for the best.

Yeah did you have polarity problems with the two LEDs on the right side of the stereo?
Also lool at that link Again there are about 12 different "blub" types on that page... the 15, 19 type ones are for Brake lights HAHA NO ***** I wont beable to fit those....
but no they make wedge base ones (towards the bottom) that you can get with either 4 3mm super brights, or 1 5mm "wide agle" the wide angle has an inverted tip so the light goes out the sides instead of stright up. then they also have LED arrays that match the Dome light (or map light).
Look Again.

Question
So Sperry and Silvertoy, it seems like you guys have found the bulb condoms worked better than the led's for the gauge lighting, in terms of eveness and overall appearance... Does this mean you switched the HVAC and Stereo to bulb condoms? or are the HVAC/Stereo still LED's with bulb condoms on the gauges? If so, how closely do the two match?
I definately like the idea of bulb condoms since they're so much easier and I'm not very EE inclined...but matching them to the center console would be priority #1...

| sperry | 04-14-2003 12:09 PM |
Yeah, bulb condoms are *much* easier... 10 min vs. 10 hour job . However, I don't think you can do bulb condoms for blue (for those of you going blue), since the "yellow" light of the bulbs themselves makes green. (stupid zip-loc!)
However, I found the red condoms to be only slightly "less red" than the LEDs, and perhaps about 2/3rds the brightness. But since the LEDs were "too red" IMO (the light wavelength is so long, you can't just glance at the gauges, you have to look and wait for your eyes to get enough light... remember human eyes don't see red so well... that's why it's good for avoiding night-blindness). The red-comdom'd bulbs are just the right shade of red IMO.

I ordered mine from www.partsexpress.com Do a search for "red cover" and it will find them.
The .2" covers work on the bulbs in the dash and A/C and the .12" covers work on the little lamps in the radio... at least on the lamps in the WRX, I assume the Outback is similar.
At $1.70 for 10 covers, you might as well get a bunch so you can double-up if you want it more red (I used two covers per bulb).

I don't have any pictures of the bulb condom lighting right now but I do have a little movie I recorded of my Vishnu Stage 1 exhaust and intercooler waterspray that shows the gauges:
http://doink.net/images/misc/Exhaust_and_Waterspray.avi
The gauges look a little dimmer in the movie than in person, but I think you will get the gist of the coloring. Also, it's about 10.5MB, so beware modem users!
I can take some real pics tonight after work.

I think I ordered 2 packages of each, but it was a while ago, so I don't remember, it could have been 3 packages of each. I'm pretty sure silvertoy factored in the doubling up of the .2's but not doubling up on the radio's .12's when he said 2 .2's and 1 .12's.
I can't remember how many lights there are in there, since it was a while ago that I changed mine. But I can guarentee that 3 packages of .2's (30 total) and 2 packages of .12's (20 total) will be enough to convert the instrument cluster, the a/c controls, the radio and the fog and cruise switches with doubled up covers.
Good luck!

Good luck!

Is it really a pain to remove the instrument cluster to put condoms on the bulbs? Do you need to remove the whole dash? Or worry about the airbag going off?
Thanks

Nope, it's easy:
There's two screws on the underside of the instrument cluster arch. Take those out, and you can pop the bezel off (bottom of it is held down by those plastic pop-ip wedge things).
Then there's three screws holding the instruments down.
Once those are out, there's three connectors across the top/back of the instruments that need to be un-plugged.
Once the cluster is out, you have direct access to the bulbs from the back of it.
Reverse the above procedure to reinstall.
Just take your time to avoid scratching anything... the "glass" in front of the instruments scratches easily.

it's not a problem at all ... you could probably get the whole thing done in under a half hour.
for a 2002:
just unscrew the two screws at the top of the instrument cluster. you can then pull that piece right out (adjust your steering wheel all they way down)
then there are three screws holding the cluster down... take those out
reach behind and un plug the three pulgs attached to the top of the cluster. there is one on either side and one in the center (They all have little buttons you need to push to release them)
once that's done you can take the culster out turn it arround and all the bulbs are right there. (well bulb sockets just quarter turn and they come right out, you'll get the idea)

awesome. Thanks guys. I ordered the red bulbs from partsexpress but unfortunately, they are out of stock for one of the sizes. Hopefully won't take too long. I plan on doing the radio as well. Does doubling up the bulbs on the radio look good like the instrument cluster?
Again thanks for the help

Okay, it took me a while longer than I figured, but as promised here's some pics of my setup using the bulb covers. Everything except the LCD odometer and the LCD radio display are red bulb covers. The 2 LCDs are still using 660nm red LEDs. (Feel free to ignore my check engine light... dern "inefficient catalytic converter")

nice job!! looks great. Any experience with blue condoms? I hear a lot of how they turn out teal instead of blue, but what if you double it up? Anyone with pics using blue condoms?
Thanks
