The FIX! 05 STi clusters into 02-03s (possibly 04s)

Due to an overwhelming amount of IMs and emails regarding setups that are NOT discussed in this thread (IE, 07 clusters into an 05-06, 02 clusters into an 05+, NON-USDM clusters, etc...) PLEASE DO NOT IM ME ABOUT THIS! I DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER.
The following post is ONLY for USDM 05+ STI clusters (as far as I know, 05-07 clusters are all the same, but don't quote me on that.) into USDM 02-03s (NOT SURE ABOUT 04-05s!) WRX.
Specifically, this was done using a USDM 05 Cluster and a USDM 02 WRX. If it's not discussed by me in this post, I don't know the answer... sorry.
Also, please READ the thread first. I have had a lot of people who didn't follow the directions and are blowing fuses. READ THE FAQ COMPLETELY FIRST!
Also, I sold my WRX years ago, so I can't check out my car anymore to help you out. Sorry if I'm coming off snippy. I continue to get emails/IMs to this day from people that either didn't read the thread or ask for info outside the realm of my knowledge.
So, on with the original post below:
USDM 02-03s (possibly 04s and 05s) suffer from a few problems when installing the USDM 05+ STi Clusters:
Loud buzzing
blown fuses on the radio
ABS Light
Rear Diff light
The fix is rather simple and doesn't require soldering anything or ripping out the buzzers or any of that.
Tools required:
Phillips head screwdriver (stubby and normal length)
Wire cutters
Wire strippers
Crimp on insulated quick connects
Wire crimper
Step 1: remove the cluster
Trunk Monkey has a good explanation of this.
Step 2: Carefully file down the one little peg in the STi cluster that will keep the stock plug on the left from going in
Step 3: locate the two wires
on the MAIN plug, cut wire B28 (yellow/green)

crimp on some quick connects should you ever have to plug it back in for the stock cluster.
on the RIGHT side plug, cut wire A9 (orange/white)

Again, crimp on some quick connects.
Step 4 is optional and involves silencing the R.Diff Temp light. The EASIEST solution is to simply throw some electrical tape over it.
The more ADVANCED way to do it is to Ground pin 4 but I was fine with just taping it.
Step 5 is the ABS Light. At this point, no good solution has been found. I taped it and left a LITTLE of the bottom of the A showing so that if the ABS DOES fail, I'll see the little yellow light go off. The solution involves backwards wiring the ABS circuit on the board to be OFF all the time until failure.
Step 6. Now, plug the plugs back in. The plugs are upside down on the STi, so just flip the cable ends over and plug them in.
I suggest plugging the left one in first as that's the plug end with 16 pins instead of the 14 on the WRX Harness.
Step 7. Shove everything back in, screw it all together and...

Set your redline and enjoy.
The redline buzzer will NOT work, just to let you know.
All the gauges work, the 'lights on' light even turns on to let you know that your... lights... are on.
So, there you have it... the FINAL SOLUTION to 05 STI clusters. Enjoy!

oh, and I have to thank elsanto who actually DID this prior to me buying the car.
that's why there are blue butt connectors in the photos already.
he basically told me 'find the butt connectors and cut them'
So I did. and the gauges started working.
I just figured I'd document how to do it and put the million threads about this to an end.

very nice.
I got VERY lucky, i was able to get an 04 STi cluster that had only a couple thousand more miles on it than my car at the time, so I just continued to drive with the stock cluster in until they matched and then swapped. :D
No corrections needed.
good writeup for the guys with the 05 problems

Just one thing,
The green plug above the fuel guage on the bugeye WRX (ie 2001 maybe 2002) is a different size and pin connection to the 2006 STi Cluster (which I want to fit to my bugeye) does anyone know the colours/wirers the go into the sti plug are the same as the wrx as I can rewire a new plug to suit?
Thanks

Tried fitting mine today, but the buzzer kept going, the handbrake light stayed on and the rev counter didnt work either.
The plug on the right og the clocks I cut the orange wire with the white lines but the busser stayed on
THe Green & yellow wire I cut in the middle plug, you can't see what that does!
The left hand plug I cut the guide off as above and shaved the thicker guide parts to fit the plug in the gauges, but what I can't get roung my head is the WRX has 14 pins the STi has 16pins how do you know which to match up??
Any ideas... couldthe USA wiring be different fronm the UK cars?

This write up is great. However, there is a better way to cover the "ABS" and "rear diff." lights that looks like it is from the factory.
Whole process takes about 15 mintutes but is WELL worth it
Tools:
- Electrical tape
- tweezers (not mandatory but will make it easier)
1) pull the clear cover off the cluster
2) un-snap the black surround off the face of the cluster
3) gently pull the black piece with the silver rings off the face of the gauges.
4) gently pull back the corner of the black (velvet feeling) piece right next to where the "rear diff" light shines. Pull gently but don't worry because it pops right up without breaking (mine made popping sounds which scared me but it was just the adhesive coming un-done and it snapped right back into place tightly when I finished).
5) Take a small piece of electrical tape attached to the end of the tweezers and cover the white square directly underneath where the "rear diff" light shines.
6) Do this same thing where the "abs" light is.
BTW: I also used this method to eliminate the "STI" light on the tach. To do this you have to pull up from the corner mentioned in step 4 as well as the opposite corner. Gently and SLOWLY keep pulling the velvet piece up until you can see the red square underneath where the STI shines. Use tweezers to get a piece of electrical tape to cover the red square.
Once you have finished covering the lights you wanted to eliminate, put the cluster back together in the opposite order you took it apart. Put it in the car and you will now see that it appears that these lights were never on and even if you look EXTREMELY closely you cannot tell there is electrical tape or that those lights were ever there.
When I get hold of a camera I will take some pics.
Kevin.

Does the outside temp. sensor work on the STi cluster? Also, does an 04STi cluster fit on an 02 easier? And can't you just pull those bulbs for the ones you want to cover up? I've not taken mine out yet so forgive me.

Apparently there is a mod to get the outside Temp gauge working. If anyone has any input on this I would also like to know. But yes, the 04 cluster should plug directly into an 02-05 WRX/RS, just not into an 05+ STI.

The only re-wiring needed is what the OP explained in his first post. If you follow his write up exactly, it will work just fine for you. I've had mine installed for 3 months now with zero problems and I am still loving the look.
My only problem with the new look is that Subaru should have made the shift light much brighter IMO.

i am swapping an 06 sti cluster into my 05 wrx, i was just wondering for the step which you cut the b2 wire if the color of the wire is different on the 05. the wire on the diagram with the 05 cluster shows a different wire than the yellow/green one which they suggest to cut, the wire on the 05 cluster is yellow/black i believe. let me know. thanks.

also i just noticed on the 06 sti cluster the female end on the left side of the cluster seems to be a little larger than the 05 wrx cluster, theres 2 extra pins on the female side of the sti cluster. i can sand down a part of female end from the 06 sti cluster, or the male end from my 05 wrx wiring harness. i just dont know which one to sand down and which side to plug it into, i can leave 2 pins not connected on the 06 sti female side, either the right side leaving two pins open, or the left side leaving two pins open. someone please help me because i dont want to ruin my cluster. thanks.

Is the b28 wire on an 05 cluster yellow/green. I'm not sure which wire to cut to prevent fuses from blowing. In the picture in the top of the cluster, do I just cut the wire that matches with the pin listed in the pic of the 05 cluster, because I am pretty sure that wire isn't yellow/green. Let me know. | Chapel | 05-20-2007 11:32 PM |
I wanna say it's fuse #13 (under the coin tray in the dash, not in the engine bay)
read your owners manual. Just remember it's those mini fuses, not the full size ones :P
I think it's a 15A mini fuse. if you hadn't cut the yellow/green before putting it in, you blew that fuse... no questions ask, it WILL blow if you put the cluster in and turned the key to 'on' without cutting that wire.
I just don't remember exactly which fuse# it is. It's in the manual though.
Quick question: will 04 wrx (non sti) cluster fits my 02 wrx? I was serching, but didn't find anything...
Thanks.
I know this is old, but no one answered it. The answer is yes. I have the 04 WRX cluster in mine. I had is modded with blue back-lighting from Lightwerkz. Only the ABS light is on. I did STI seats at the same time so this could be a result of the seats. It doesn't matter because I'm pulling the cluster and doing the recommended electrical tape mod. Here are some pics:

Sorry for the blurriness. It's really tough to take interior night shots without using the flash or a tripod.
Thanks.
Could somebody take a picture of the "C" connector on the 2002 wrx harness, including all wires, colors, placement, etc. I tried to install the sti cluster this evening, only to find out that the previous owner totally and utterly ****** my wiring. I found splices where there shouldn't be, a grouping on my C connector that is totally ridiculous and doesn't match any diagram i've seen at all. The cluster lights up the needles, and ABS/Battery/CEL. ODO display is a blank red box, and the outside temp is also a blank red box. For reference, the wire grouping on my "C" connector currently looks like this:
***
***
Whereas on the wiring diagram, there is definate spaces in between the wires on the connector.

I was reading this and thought of something...
Could you just break off the pins themselves inside the sti clusters connectors instead of cutting the wires on the wrx's harness?
Logically it should work if there is no connection. This way you wont have but connectors on your harness.
Only downside would be the cluster would never work correctly in an 05 again but in these curcumstances thats not really a probelm.
