The OFFICIAL: Auto-X Video Analysis thread part 2

AndrewSS 06-13-2006 02:26 PM
Here's mine from Sunday. A super tight course designed by a Miata guy. But I managed to eek out my first PAX win over another guy in a borrowed Miata (by 0.040 s). Not bad for a 2600+ lb car against some much lighter competition.
Cool, looks pretty smooth and overall good driving from what I could see, nice video and good job on the PAX placement.
Scoob5555 06-13-2006 04:27 PM

People laugh at my auto, but I think it helps to be able to get 1st gear on tight course like this. And I really work at it to get 1st when I want it. Works most of the time, too. Of course this tranny can't last forever doing this, so a manual swap will be planned for the first hint of the auto failing...

I run in STS, so I'm on Hankook R-S2 tires. Coilovers, camber plates, big rear sway. Did I mention camber? -2.8* f and ~-2.0* r. That helps eliminate a lot of tire squeal.

Thanks for the evaluations. Tough to pick apart with only one video on that course. It seemed like I was going SLOW on the hairpin to the finish, but it was just fast enough in the end.
digitalseance 06-13-2006 09:34 PM

Ok, here's mine from the CENDIV Solo II Championship event. I got schooled by a 2005 ACR SRT-4 by 5.7 seconds (cummulative over the two days). I was only faster than him on run 2 on sunday. I looked up online what the ACR package included and it includes adjustable shocks, tighter springs, and a little less weight.

The videos can be downloaded from http://www.digitalseance.com/wrx/

It was the CENDIV event, not the Parkland College event.

Comments, PLEASE!! I normally blow the doors off the SRT-4's even when they have race rubber, and this guy put me in my place (to say the least).

Car: 2002 WRX
Class: D Stock
Chiketkd 06-14-2006 12:56 PM

The SRT-4 ACR is definitely a better autoX package than the standard SRT-4.

I looked at some of your runs and you seemed to run some pretty clean lines through the slaloms (Sunday Run 2) as well as the other technical parts of the course - what I'd suggest would be pushing the envolope a little more and taking the course faster in most areas until you start knocking some cones down. Also, try to carry more speed through the slower sections of the course by either apexing later or running a slightly wider line.

I'm still a novice but I was at a test-n-tune with my SCCA club earlier this year and had an solid WRX driver (Chad) in my club ride along with me for some of my initial runs. I was feeling pretty good about going through the slalom section placing my car close to the cones w/o hitting any down, but he advised me after my first few runs to push it more UNTIL I knocked cones down and then back it off a little on the next run. It was a short course, but my times dropped from a 25.3 to a 24.5 (Chad was running 24.1-24.2's that day).

Btw, is the n/a '06 Pontiac Solstice classed in C Stock? It should be a screamer at N'tls this year as it comes stock with 8" wide wheels and you could probably stuff 275 r-comps on there! I imagine the Solstice GTP w/ 260hp tubocharged hp will be in A stock with the S2000...
digitalseance 06-14-2006 04:13 PM

The only thing I think I could have improved on was carrying more speed through the slow tight "showcase" turns. I was sliding around quite a bit on sunday pushing the envelope as hard as I could.

Btw, that run you mentioned (sun #2) I ended up with 2 cones on that one. I thought it was clean but later found out that I hit one in the last turn and one in the slalom. :(

I believe the Solstice was running in C stock but I could be wrong. I would check the CENDIV championship site for updates on the results. I looked yesterday and they still weren't up yet. They've got another event this weekend (in Sounth Bend IN) so I would hope that it would be up very soon. I will be planted in front of the tube watching Le Mans drunker than a skunk so I will not be attending it. :)

Another thing, if you notice on the last three runs on Sunday, I seemed to loose all boost at 6k in 2nd gear right before the timing light. Ever heard of this before? This is the first time this has happened and I haven't been able to reproduce it on the street.
tuskenraider 06-14-2006 04:28 PM
I seemed to loose all boost at 6k in 2nd gear right before the timing light. Ever heard of this before?
How much gas was in the car? Could have been fuel starvation from coming around the last corner into the straight.
Chiketkd 06-14-2006 04:58 PM

LOL!

I'm with tuskenraider on the boost thing. If no vacuum lines came off and everything was back to normal on the street, it could definitely be fuel starvation. I always autoX with at least a 1/4-1/3 tank of gas.

That could have been it. If memory serves right, the gas light came on when I was sitting in the car waiting on the award ceremony. It was only happening on that last stretch too.

and long live Le Mans! Sleep is for the weak!!

I'm all ears to this vid. Constructive criticism is greatly welcomed!

This was my first outing on my new custom HKS Hipermax RS coilovers. I have numerous tweaks I need to do but spent most of this past Sunday just driving the car to get a feel for it. Actually my fastest run was .5 quicker than this vid, but I only edited this one cause it was my wifey's first AX too, heh.

nice run., Geesh, thats some serious rain. Good steady driving. In slick stuff like that its too easy to carry too much speed and plow thru a turn. You did a good job of keeping the traction.

Not bad. You where ship-wheeling it around the 55second mark. I saw a tractor-ball corner a bit later too.

Might want to try moving the seat back futher to help keep your arms straight since you are a taller guy.

My Autocross Video for analysis
Top time in my class was 40.906. I finished 7th of 20. 109 of 187 PAX. First time out this year. I know I left at least 1.5 seconds on course.
Be gentle on me. Third year but can only do about three local events a year.
This was my first time out this year, after several changes to the car.

I'm not exactly an expert but something I noticed is that you could definitely get closer to the cones on the inside in a few places.

Yeah, you definitely left a bunch of time on the table. Looking at the first two turns, you didn't even 'squeak' a tire which means you could have carried even more speed through there. The vid skipped a little during the slalom, but it didn't sound like you squeaked or squealed your tires (so you could have gone through there faster). You attacked the next few corners well, but then on the last few just seemed to take it a little easier.

I'd also suggest looking further down the course. Seemed like a few turns snuck up on you...

Great camera angle btw!

I would say that it seems like you arnt looking far enough ahead on the course. It seems like you might be going in a bit too fast sometimes too, your lines need to be cleaner and tighter in many areas. It looked like your slalom lines werent tight enough.

I love that camera angle, I am gonna try it out next autox :)

Looking ahead is a problem for me especially to the right for some reason.
Slalom could have been faster. I am always poor at picking and remembering braking points and end up on the brakes while turning.

Thanks for the comments!

You nailed it Andrew, not looking ahead and just plain hot into corners. As I look at the video, the course was much wider than I remembered. In at least three corners I could have been closer to the cones.
I expect to get better with more seat time. First event this year after tires, tune, RSB. And I had no clue where to set the tire pressures. Had them too high to start.

If you get a remote mic and run it into the car it will help with the sound.
Or find a dense piece of foam and tape over the camera mic.

Autox Video - Fire away with what I am doing wrong
Well, before you click the link please let me apologize if this video is poor quality, to large, too small, etc. This is the first time I have ever captured video off my camera and converted the files. I really don't know what I am doing, but the weather is crappy out so I am trying to figure it out. :)

If you change the view setting on google to "original size" the clarity is much better.

Anyway,
I'm a former Subaru owner, now a Scion tC owner. My tC is stock. This was my 2nd event in the car, and my first event on a larger course in a long time. Really my first time running the tC at these speeds.

Here is my best run of the day which was run #8 of the day (last one):
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4337696969920656328

Fire away with pointers and what I can do to improve. I can already hear:
1. Look ahead more
2. Brake more
3. Be more smooth
etc.. :)

This weekend I am attending a school (should be an excellent refresher, plus tons of seat time in the car), and an autox on Sunday if weather looks ok. This is the first FWD car I've autoxed. All my other vehicles were AWD Subarus.

Thanks,
Paul G.
skuttledude 07-28-2006 10:26 PM

I will say that is the first 2 min AX lap I've ever seen. LONG.
I thought you did pretty good.
Looking ahead would help a bit and walking the course alot due to its size.
For me, I would've needed 10 walk-around laps to remember all those turns.
As you get use to your car, you'll get closer to the cones.
Otherwise, it was a good lap. Film quality was rather good too!
paultg 07-28-2006 11:05 PM

Thanks. The couse length is about 1.1 miles long. My time was actually a 1:32.5, and very fast folks in high powered cars (Z06 on race rubber) get down into the low 1:20's I think (don't remember the results). We walk it once, have 3 timed runs in the morning as "practice", and then 5 additional runs.

Some people bring bikes to "walk the course".

Thanks for the comments. I'm looking forward to trying the car out more and getting use to it. Being on the stock Yoko S32A's (pretty much a 215/45R17 RE92) doesn't help much.

Hey, here are 2 runs from today, from me and and my codriver, Orion.

Orion: http://media.putfile.com/orionSTigovcup1

Me: http://media.putfile.com/andrewSTigovcup1

(( ^note my steering inputs are rather harsh this run, particulary in a few areas its baddd sawing... I know I am scrubbing speed when doing that - I GOTTA kick that habit when I am pushing the car hard... (hopefully tomorrow I chill out and sort my driving out better). Big WHOOPS on the DNF cone at the end, I got on the throttle too late cause I wasnt setup for that last corner, the diffs got "confused" and they pushed me out, I slapped one of the DNF cones and lost my fastest time! That run would have been like 0.3 off Mike Smith (another STi) but oh well.))
tuskenraider 07-29-2006 04:15 PM

^^You're not as bad as your buddy Orion but both of you need to lighten up in the corners a bit......to much push from not braking enough and/or early enough. You both seem to keep turning on the wheel and still maintaining throttle after already entering an understeer situtation, though Orion is worse. I'd say brake sooner and harder and be patient with the throttle, unwind the wheel and lighten up on the throttle a little when you've already overdriven the corner to get traction back quicker. Your lines seem a little tighter and better since you aren't pushing away from the key corner cones as much from overdriving them and you've already noted your jerky wheel inputs. Oh, and I'd also make sure to keep both hands on the wheel at the start, no matter how soon you need shift. Orion took the first corner with one hand on the wheel, no good. Hope you both had fun.
AndrewSS 07-29-2006 05:36 PM

^ Yep, I agree - but knowing is easier than doing, hopefully tomorrow I can relax more (today was my first time having a codriver and the heat and whatnot made it less than ideal for me, I am not too happy with my results).

Anyway, thanks for the input.

I will post an in car video of our next race this Sunday.

Slow in fast out when I power out the car understeers. On slaloms do you keep the speed consistent or step on the throttle as you pass a cone and let go as you enter another? Speed consistent on sweepers?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Fire away with pointers and what I can do to improve. I can already hear:
1. Look ahead more
2. Brake more
3. Be more smooth
etc.. :)

This weekend I am attending a school (should be an excellent refresher, plus tons of seat time in the car), and an autox on Sunday if weather looks ok. This is the first FWD car I've autoxed. All my other vehicles were AWD Subarus.

Thanks,
Paul G.
Bump. Looking for some feedback myself. I accidently posted this outside this thread. Asked a modertor to move it here, so not sure anyone has seen it.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul...

1. Look ahead more
2. Brake more (a LOT more)
3. Be more smooth

If you know these three points already, why did you put them? These three things are the biggest for getting a faster time. You just have to do it OUT THERE on the course.

One other thing that you're doing (and this goes hand-in-hand with looking ahead) is your video shows you aiming AT cones as you're coming up to them. Bad monkey! You need to move away from them and do whats called a late apex on them. Almost all of auto-x is late apexing (there are exceptions as with anything). Opening up the turns to where you carry more speed into it and then braking.

Best visual of that is coming off that far taxiway onto the main runway. On the taxi-way after you went around the slalom and through the gate into the sweeper, you went down just a little right of the middle and then turned in wayyy too early. I can actually see rubber laid down of people that brought it over to the grass and then turned-in to the corner forming a nice sweeper (you can also see someone that took your line and locked them up into and through the pointer cones... incorrect line. :) ).

In other words, you made that turn tighter than it had to be and you had to slow down too much in order to make it.

Another thing, 20 seconds into the video, there's a cone down (you were late coming out of the gate previous because of being late coming out of the slalom). This was SVTOA, right? Do they allow you to stop for downed cones and get a re-run? This gives you a 'free' look at the course... you can drive through the rest of it and not have to worry about being penalized (at a lower speed of course). It's a freebie so to speak.

You need to work on your looking ahead. This will allow you to brake earlier (instead of bombing into a slalom too fast and scrubbing too much speed and getting behind all the way through it) and it will allow you to accel OUT of elements instead of trying to get the car around the cone to make the next element.

I think I need to try one of their events. :) I know I've been saying it for a while and I think Grant goes too (Z06).

Thanks KC. I'm working on it. I had a pretty good weekend up at NHIS. It's just hard getting use to a new car, sorting that all out, and being consistant behind the wheel. That is my biggest problem, I'm not consistent.

I'm getting use to the brakes alot more. That car actually has ABS that works.
