Video lap of the Nurburgring, STi5 TypeRA Style part 2

Fred 09-25-2002 06:09 PM

Love the videos, but I have a question for somebody who knows - when I play the videos at work, they're fine, but when I play them at home, they pause (VERY briefly) every second or so. The whole way through. Not just these, either, but others that I've downloaded. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows media player both locations.

Thanks.
ellisnc 09-25-2002 06:57 PM

down
johnfelstead 09-25-2002 07:04 PM

huh? what the hell does down mean? give us a clue! :D

I suspect the reason its slow is because the CPU isnt a very good spec or memory is an issue
ellisnc 09-25-2002 08:47 PM

up :p :D
meebs 09-25-2002 10:23 PM

That was great stuff! Looking forward to the rear view cam.
johnfelstead 09-26-2002 07:04 AM

I bought a software package last night to allow me to make proper edits, should be fun stuff when i get to grips with it.
Arnie 10-01-2002 08:47 PM

john, you are such a techno geek! ;) video editing is a blast, just don't get carried away with all the different ways you can wipe from one scene to another!

Very cool.

johnfelstead 10-06-2002 08:26 PM

This may well be my last video at the nurburgring as the owner of the circuit has now banned all video making. Bastard. :(

I guess this adds another dimension to my ring trips/novels. Where to hide the bullet cam next. :D:lol:
Arnie 10-06-2002 08:38 PM

Hey John, I think I will be at the ring on the 19. of october (saturday?) for a little drive. will meet a few of the Impreza GT club of Germany guys there. I'll take a spin in my rental Lupo or Polo! That should be fun.

Would be great if you were also there.

arnie
GoodFinder 10-06-2002 08:43 PM

John,

Thanks for the very helpful information here for us here. Sad to hear that videotaping will be banned. I'll definitely need to schedule a trip over there sometime soon before they start making more "rules and regulations" that might inhibit driving the track. At least, in the meantime, we can hear about it from your experiences and postings!

GoodFinder :)
HoRo1 10-06-2002 09:09 PM

That ban will be impossible to enforce. Jerks! I could say something nasty about the Kra... er Germans and who won the war - but I'm too mature for that!

How about Germany 1 - England 5:lol:
philioWRXman 10-06-2002 11:35 PM

john, that sucks that videos cant be made anymore, id love to see more shots. but, why would the owner ban video-making?????

and i love your car. ive said it before, and ill say it again. where can i see more pics and mods?
johnfelstead 10-07-2002 09:27 AM

I have no plans to be at the ring that weekend Arnie, i need to take a friday off work to make it worthwhile, right now all my holidays are acounted for. That may change, if it does i'll let you know.

One of the reasons this ban is in place is because someone posted footage of a fatal crash up on the net. Nurburgring GMBH obviously dont like the truth being shown in public. Another is probably down to money, the more that apears on the net, the less they will sell oficial tapes.

The guys on the ringers list will try and get this overturned, because it is a very bad move for safety for lots of reasons i wont list here.

Hopefully, come next year, things will have changed again.
quentinberg007 10-08-2002 12:30 AM

awesome video! i love the commentary as well :)

johnfelstead 10-08-2002 08:11 PM

some good news on the video production. I got a mail today from a guy i took round the ring in my westie 2 years ago. I knew he was something in TV/Music industry but didnt know what.

Turns out he is the Head of International Production of The Pepsi Chart. He is going to cut me a proper video using his profesional studio. How cool is that! :D
civ11c 10-08-2002 08:24 PM

Any cooler and it'd be FROZEN!! When is it gonna be posted up for us fans to watch!!!!:alien:
GoodFinder 10-09-2002 08:59 AM

I'd line up to buy that DVD for sure!

GoodFinder :)
johnfelstead 10-09-2002 09:19 AM

After going to all the effort of getting a proper edited video together, i am going to copywrite this and if you want to see it, you will have to buy it, i wont be posting it on the net.

I dont know if it would sell, but if diesel does as good a job as he is capable, it should be a cracker. I have to get all my footage copied and catalogued, then down to him at the studio for him to mix. He has all the kit to take the blue tint out of the bulet cam footage, he explained to me how to combat that with the camera control unit (most went way over my head :D)

I'll let you know how things progress.
TimStevens 10-09-2002 09:21 AM

Well, just a neato idea that's probably totally out there, but here ya go:

Since it sounds like you've got all these camera angles from the same lap, if you're thinking about releasing a DVD, it would be cool if you could sync them together and release a DVD that allows you to pick which camera angle you want using the "angle" feature most DVD players support.
johnfelstead 10-09-2002 09:26 AM

Doing a DVD like that is probably way too much work/time. I will be happy with a normal video type format.
TimStevens 10-09-2002 09:48 AM

Yeah, that's what I figured... but it would be cool nontheless ;)

Hey, maybe you can get Mr. Grist to come and call out the corners on your video ;)
johnfelstead 10-09-2002 06:52 PM

OK, the next installment of video footage is now available.

This one is taken from the front bumper using the bullet cam. The mike was next to the exhaust so its LOUD. :D

hope you find it fun.

Many thanks again Casey!
johnfelstead 10-10-2002 06:45 AM

I now have all the laps i wanted up on the server and available for download, the first four are from my last trip to the ring 3 weeks ago.
The Helmetcam and RearViewCam are from the same lap using two cameras.
The FrontBumperCam is taken from the left lower corner of the radiator feed in the front bumper.
The RoofCam is taken from the top of the roof vent
Onboard1 and Onboard2 are taken from a tripod mount inside the car from the trip prior to me installing my Leda Suspension.

civ11c 10-10-2002 07:15 AM

John, I think there are thousands of ICLUB members waiting to give you a group hug for all the trouble you gone thru to put this vids for us to watch!:D

Thanks a bunch....now I have to go to a friends place (he's got cable) to download ur massive files!
grandpa rex 10-10-2002 03:09 PM

Count me out of the group hug. However, these are terrific.

I've only watched the rooftop cam view and a few minutes of the front bumper view so far. Unbelieveable. John you hit every apex perfectly! You must really know that track and be one he** of a driver.

I am absolutely overcome with envy.
MrSwede 10-10-2002 07:54 PM

Absolutely awesome, thanks a billion!:D
johnfelstead 10-11-2002 07:34 AM

Thanks. :)

I am not inch perfect yet and in some of the corners over blind crests i am not using 100% of the track because i have seen cars bounce off the barriers there and end up in the track, so i am leaving a little in reserve just in case.

My car goes in next week for it's gearbox rebuild and change to 5th gear, so it should be a lot quicker in the sections above 115MPH, which is a large chunk of the track really.

I may look into installing some road legal slicks for the next trip and see what diference that makes too.
Uncle_Git 10-15-2002 07:36 PM

John - I have been having a **** day at work and popped in here for the first time in ages.

Your movies brought a huge grin to my ugly chops - thanks mate ;-)

Tell you what though - you woulnd't be that fast with me in the car - no way could you go that fast with the weight and size of the turd that would appear in my sock......
johnfelstead 10-16-2002 02:24 PM

Glad you enjoyed them.

I should be picking my car up in the morning after it's gearbox rebuild, 5th gear swap so i'll have to get myself over to the ring again to check it out. :D

When is it you are at the ring Arnie? i think i read the 27th somewhere?

Signs have now gone up at the entrance to the ring banning any videoing, so they carried through their policy. :(
EJ20K 10-16-2002 03:31 PM

John have you changed your 5th gear for a shorter / longer ratio ?????
johnfelstead 10-16-2002 04:09 PM

shorter, i have changed it from a 22MPH/1000rpm to a 19MPH/1000rpm ratio so top speed has dropped from 180MPH to 155MPH.

I didnt like the ratio split that came in the car, especially on track as it would bog down, it also made downchanges from 5th to 4th slower and more of an effort. The only plus point to the higher 5th is fuel economy on a long motorway run but it ruined a nice ratio split.

This is what is installed in the STi5 TypeRA V-Ltd as standard (what i had)

Max RPM = 8250

1st gear 5MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 41MPH
2nd gear 7.75MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 64MPH (5200rpm at 41MPH)
3rd gear 10.25MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 84MPH (6200rpm at 64MPH)
4th gear 13.75MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 112MPH (6100rpm at 84MPH)
5th gear 22MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 180MPH (5010rpm at 112MPH)

So 4th to fifth changing at 7500rpm, which is my prefered shift point dropped it to 4600rpm. A drop of 2900rpm.

Gear ratios are as follows now. (non V-Ltd ratios)

Max RPM = 8250

1st gear 5MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 41MPH
2nd gear 7.75MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 64MPH (5200rpm at 41MPH)
3rd gear 10.25MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 84MPH (6200rpm at 64MPH)
4th gear 13.75MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 112MPH (6100rpm at 84MPH)
5th gear 19MPH/1000rpm Top Speed 155MPH (5900rpm at 112MPH)

now 4th to fifth changing at 7500rpm, drops it to 5400rpm. A drop of 2100rpm. Thats a much better ratio match and will give better acceleration, easier downshifts etc. 155MPH is just about the right top speed for the ring. There are also a couple of critical corners that needed an upshift from 4th, but i needed more control on the throttle than i would have if i was in fifth, so i would just hold it in 4th at 8000rpm. The big jump at Pflatzgarten 1 is one of those points where i will now be able to carry more speed yet still have the pulling power to control it in the righthander that follows.
EJ20K 10-16-2002 04:22 PM

BTW how were the tests with the TEG electronic centre diff ..... that should also make the car to handle better.
johnfelstead 10-16-2002 04:25 PM

I decided not to go down that route for a number of reasons.
Andrew Bacon 12-19-2002 03:34 PM

Fantastic! Who says you can't download these with a modem? I start a download before I go to bed, then when I wake I have a nice new treat to watch over breakfast! :D Your driving is indeed very smooth. In the helmet cam footage, the only place I noticed a significant loss of line is at 3:09. Looks like major understeer there. A little squirly at 4:11 due to heavy braking for traffic (black Nissan?) I know if I drove the ring I would not use all of the track for half as well as you do. Thanks so much for putting these clips up.
Arnie 12-19-2002 04:32 PM

My favorites are the bumper mounted and rear mounted! So cool.
johnfelstead 12-19-2002 05:25 PM

thanks

3.09 is the tight lefthander of adenau forst, lots of people crash there and the track is very greasy with oil and sand usually spread about. It is more than a 90 degree left right, tighter than it looks, its after a very fast section too. Lots of spectators stand on the hill to the left waiting for the next victim.

4.11 is werseifen, thats a nasty corner, downhill righthand entry into the tightest lefthander on the track, i nearly smashed my westfield up there on my 12th lap after overtaking a GT3 race car just before it, it comes up on you very quickly. i take the overtaking racing line to pass the black Celica GT4, normally i am over to the right where he is to take a faster exit.

Take a look at this, it shows you the track in great detail, just click on the area you are interested in and it drills down to give you the racing line track map

News on the video, this is now in production down in London, it sounds pretty exciting stuff. I am producing the video in both PAL for Europe and NTSC format for the USA, so i hope you guys support it. ;) I looked into producing a DVD but the setup costs are just too expensive, so VHS format will have to do. I expect it to be ready for sale mid january, just in time to help get over the new year blues. :D
Arnie 12-19-2002 07:38 PM

Goods stuff, that map.

As for the video, that is great to hear. Would also be interesting if you had a voiceover track describing the drive, setting up for corners, anecdotes at that section, etc.

Anyway, can't wait to see the finished product. I'm up to buy a copy!
zoomfactor 12-19-2002 09:47 PM

Another satisfied customer!

John,

Looks like I'm late to the party. Thank you for your efforts! These make a great addition to a few Lotus 7 laps of the same track that I've picked up. Marvelous driving.

Regards,
jd
johnfelstead 12-20-2002 07:57 AM

thanks

The aim of the Video is to give something a little more interesting that just some lap footage, we hope to have some interesting stuff on there, such as a rolling track map showing where on the track i am at the time, we are also looking at having an elevation indicator on screen, so you can see in graphical form the angle of decent and climb, as the video tends to flatten out how severe it can be.

Diesel has some great ideas, the guy is a profesional TV producer so knows how to make it look slick, it should be good stuff.

Getting the tapes out to you wont be a problem either, as Jamie is going to help me with USA distribution, so i am going to ship a batch over so you can get them without big shipping costs from the UK.
Storm 12-20-2002 10:58 AM

Those videos are just incredible, John. I take it you have intimate knowledge of the track to be so quick. Very smooth driving!

I just can't get over how friggin quick you're goin at times! Your car is truly amazing!

I'll surely buy one of the vidoes when they're done. I'll kick myself forever more by not taking part in a public day at the ring during my 3yr residency.....:( Guess my daily commute on the A5 in outside Frankfurt a.M. was enough for me at the time.

Jay Storm
www.sourcemotorsports.com
johnfelstead 12-20-2002 06:38 PM

glad you like them Jay.

the car is running a stock engine, LedaB suspension, stock rollbars, AP racing 330mm brakes, nothing trick to it really. The Sti5 RA is a great car out of the box with a fabulous transmition system and a good 280BHP engine. It's lighter than any other Impreza too with thinner glass.

It takes a long time to be able to drive the ring that quickly in safety, its something you shouldnt try to emulate, you just have to serve your time and build your speed, otherwise the place will bite you. I have it pretty well memorised now and can lap within a second or two every lap. Still lots to learn of course, but i have the important stuff well learned.

It is the ultimate race circuit and is loved and feared for the right reasons. Next time over make sure you take a trip round.
HoRo1 12-21-2002 11:10 AM

Great

Elevation changes much more obvious with the rear view camera.
Andrew Bacon 12-21-2002 03:35 PM

John,
Curious: What size rims and tires do you run? What brake pads? Are your calipers 4 pot front / 2 pot rear?
Thanks
johnfelstead 12-21-2002 04:01 PM

wheels are 7"x17" with Bridgestone SO2 Pole Position size 215/40x17

Front brakes are 330mm 6 groove AP Racing disks on Alloy bells, Calipers are CP5200 4 pot using a special Mintex M1153 compound (MGF cup race pads) front. Rear are the STi5 RA 2 pots with Mintex M1155 pads on standard vented disks.

This is my car in the Nurburgring carpark.

FUNKED1 01-08-2003 02:58 AM

John thanks so much for the videos.
I know and love the track from old F1 photos and the GPL video game. Hope to get over there some day and take some laps.
Question: On a good day are you quicker or slower than the Taxi?
johnfelstead 01-08-2003 03:38 AM

Pleasure

Just a bit quicker these days. The ring taxi tends to lap around 8:30-8:40 BTG, i am lapping 8:20-8:30 on average these days.
FUNKED1 01-08-2003 04:56 AM

I saw other vehicles on the track, but I didn't know one of them was a track taxi. Which car is that? It is a trite question, just curious.
-Andy
johnfelstead 01-08-2003 11:28 AM

It's not on any of those videos. I have some in the wet from my last trip, playing with the taxi.
Lifino 01-08-2003 11:45 AM

Okay, so this Taxi caught my attention, I did a little search... Sounds cool.

In my search I found a story about the fastest Taxi driver at the ring... If you can get past the guy's attitude toward the concept of a woman driver holding the title... then read:

http://www.paulinet.co.uk/ring_taxi.html

The part that bugs me is the fact that the lady ANSWERS the phone while driving a sub 9:00 lap! I'm the first to crack a joke about women talking on the phone while driving, typicaly in the Ford Excursion... But this takes the cake, flings it from the road, bounces it over a guard rail, and lands it in a tree....
10th Warrior 01-08-2003 11:45 AM

the taxi i do believe is a M5. obviously, i don't know this from first hand experience ;)
johnfelstead 01-08-2003 11:54 AM

Sabine is the female ring taxi driver (M5), she is just perfect. :D:lol:

She has won the 24hr race at the ring twice, she can drive the track looking out the side window only. 9:00 for her is a stroll in the park.

She also owns a bar in nurburg, after a days driving i usually go there and have a meal, then spend the last hour chatting with her about her racing and stories from driving the ring taxi. She is completely mad. :D

There arent that many women about like her, a real class act. ;):D
Andrew Bacon 01-09-2003 12:00 AM

Women like that are a rare breed, and I personally don't know nor have ever met ANY of them. :(

John, I'd like your initial gut impression of the STi 2.5 turbo Subaru has dished up for us over here. There are a lot of factiods flying around here about it from a lot of blokes that have never laid an eye on a genuine STi car, much less driven one to 9/10's. We are all anxiously awaiting it's release to the public, and your opinion if it's apparent merrit or lack of would be welcome!
Iain 01-09-2003 02:25 AM

:-o :-o :-o

I cannot believe I didn't run across this thread before!

Thank you so much, John, for sharing the BEST thing I've seen on the Internet in years!

Iain McFarland

I was waffling on ordering the STi but this put me over the edge. I'm telling the wife it's your fault!
johnfelstead 01-09-2003 12:24 PM

What do I think to the 2.5T STi? Well, this is all without driving it first, so it's just gut feeling rather than knowledge.

To me, the most important thing about this car is not the 2.5T engine. That to me in the standard spec is nothing I personally am envious of and would prefer driving the 2.0T with the twin scroll turbo, as in the Japanese spec STi8. I think the 2.0T in this form will be a better combined track/road package in standard trim. The 2.5T is the perfect answer for the USA market place though; it suits your roads and whole driving mentality/experience very well.

Where the 2.5T comes into its own is when you start modifying it for extra power. 350BHP should be easy. It wont be as crisp as a 2.0T, that's just basic physics, but it will be a fantastic engine package to mildly tune giving big power in a reliable way.

It's a bit unfair comparing my car to this too, as mine is a low geared TypeRA with a 280BHP standard engine. Mine is a lot lighter, has some trick stuff like quick steering rack, big brakes etc. In a straight fight mine will win easily in a track situation. On the road mine will be faster, but yours will be easier to drive, or rather more relaxing with its higher final drive gearing.

Comparing the USA spec STi to an STi Type-UK however, and there is no doubt yours is a much better car, even with the prodrive performance pack 300BHP upgrade fitted. The main reason for this has nothing to do with the engine; it's the transmition system.

What you guys have on the USA STi is something that until now was a TypeR/RA/spec C exclusive fit, the DCCD center diff and mechanical rear LSD. You also have the suretrack front LSD, which the UK car also has.

The DCCD is what makes these cars special. With a normal STi center Viscous diff and rear LSD you get a tendency to understeer and you cant balance the car properly on throttle. With the DCCD you get a 65/35 R/F torque split option that allows you to drive the car like it's RWD, in other words you steer with the steering and you balance with the throttle. What a lot of people don't understand is that if you are a really skilled driver, you can force this transmition system to go 100% RWD by making the rear wheels spin. As soon as you get the back wheels spinning all the torque transfers to the rear, now if you know what you are doing, you can then just keep the power on and drive it like a MK2 escort BDA. If you crap your pants and back off, instant spin. :D

This is why you hear the nasty stories of TypeR/RA's being evil to drive, its because the people behind the wheel don't know what they are doing and are pushing the car too hard and running out of talent.

You guys have a savior in this respect, you are getting an Auto DCCD, which wont let you be a plonker. You do have a manual override too though, so as soon as some of the boy racers start to play with that, expect some written off STi's, it is going to happen! That's not the cars fault though, that's the drivers, and I guarantee you will see posts on here with "my DCCD caused me to crash".

The other thing about the DCCD is the wet grip, it's going to blow your mind how much grip there is when the roads are wet. The normal viscous diffs allow wheelspin quite easily, not the DCCD when you wind the diff lock percentage up. Before I bought my RA I used to read all the rubbish about never running the diff in anything but fully open on tarmac, that didn't make any sense to me. So when I bought my RA I did some investigating of my own into what the Japanese manual really meant, and I was right, it is designed to work on all surfaces, you just have to modulate it depending on speed and conditions and what type of driving style you want to use. I have educated a lot of brits on how to get the most out of the DCCD; it's an amazing system. I love the fact you can do handbrake turns too. You may not know this but when you pull the handbrake. It releases the center diff lock, so you can just dip the clutch, pull the handbrake and you get no coupling front/rear, proper handbrake turns just like the WRC car. Traction in the wet is just amazing with the diff lock high. You also have the suretrack front LSD, which is a torque biasing diff, which helps to kill understeer too. I haven't driven an STi with the DCCD and suretrack, my own is a more conventional geared front LSD, but it should be superb, probably easier to get 100% out of than my setup.

I am intrigued as to how the Auto DCCD will work, if it were me I would have 2 separate maps in the controller, one for wet, one for dry. This is one area of the car I would like to know more about. I did look into running a custom built DCCD controller that was fully mapable on my RA, there is a lot I could do with that, especially under braking.

Anyway, I am waffling. :D I think you have yourselves something very special. It looks like a great package out of the box, good torquey engine in a strong stiff chassis with the best transmition system on the market for an enthusiastic driver. It looks pretty good too.

and thanks Iain, dont send your wife round, i think i would get a good kicking. ;)
Arnie 01-09-2003 02:57 PM

Thanks John, on educating us newbies once again on what these cars can really do and how they do it!

Your info and tips on the DCCD will be pretty vital to all who end up getting the STi since very few have ever driven this system. We should put up a sticky thread dedicated to your experience, tips and knowledge about how this system works and how to actually drive it. If you have a free hour or two, maybe you can write up some helpful tip/background on the system? Basically, a "How to drive an STi RA the right way(or how to keep your new Sti on the road and out of a ditch), by John Felstead"

Very informative.
johnfelstead 01-09-2003 07:08 PM

you know what would be really cool. ;)

Someone within SOA read this and invited me over to spend a week testing your STi and then paid me to do a comprehensive enthusiasts users guide. Written by someone who knows the cars well and understands how to drive them, yet has the ability to put that accross is a way that isnt too technical.

*cough*

:D
Arnie 01-09-2003 07:19 PM
