Did a quick search on Google... Is this the downpipe in question?

It's got a little actuator that opens up that plate so the exhaust dumps out under the car, right?
I'm researching rally/rally-x for now, but I can tell you this with 100% certainty: That exhaust/downpipe is not acceptable for any SCCA Auto-x events in any class. I'm letting you know ahead of time so you don't have any question about it at any SCCA events you may attend. So, there's no excuse for "not having known" in advance.

I'm looking at the 2007 SCCA rules now, under what grounds is it not legal? I see the section that states it must be adequately muffled and that is not a hard problem, I jsut won't open it. Please refer me to what about it makes it illegal in all classes?
| KC | 02-01-2007 05:23 PM |
Don't get mad at me for this one folks, I'm just reading the rules. If you have a problem with them, feel free to write to the SCCA.
Now for me to really burst your bubble... it's not legal for Rally America or CARS (Canadian Rally).
And here why that's applicable....
1) It's not legal in prepared (even if you HAD a third cat).
2) It's not legal in modified either. And here's why.... Modified builds off of the prepared rules. Since there's no allowance in Modified allowing the exhaust to not exit behind the driver and not to exit on the side of the car (underside doesn't count! ) it's not even legal in modified.
There's 1 stipulation in Modified class that if you ran a car that was legal with another Rally organizer, it would be allowed. Since RA and CARS do not allow that type of exhaust, you can write that one clause that may have let you in off the list.
Am I an ass for having to point this out? I may even allow for that. But you know what? It is now something that tech people at events can look for.
There's more than one reason why exhaust dump valves are not legal... the biggest is the sound they produce. (I know, WRXs are quiet! But more than one person commented on the sound your car was making.) Sound is a BIG DEAL at most rally-x venues and sites can be lost for having cars that are too loud. BIG BIG issue.
So, take this post for what you will and do what you want to do. I can't, and won't stop you. But I would have to say if *I* was doing tech and *I* found out you had this exhaust, *I* would have no issue saying "Sorry you travelled all this way for nothing." It wouldn't ultimately be up to me mind you... I would confer with those in charge higher than me and let them make the call.

Section 3.3.3.B Safety Inspection Requirements:
13) Exhaust must exit behind driver or to the side of the car.
That rule applies to every single vehicle that competes at SCCA auto-x events. It's a safety hazard... which is why it's illegal almost anywhere and with almost every racing organization other than drag racing.

I made a post and it didnt come up. I was saying it exits behind me under the car. Plus I can keep it closed and thus it exits at the rear tips. If a tech has an issue with my exhaust he can say what he pleases. I'll be explicitly clear about what the mod entails to avoid people like you from now on. As far as i can read there is no mention of a dumps legality and thus if it remains closed is totally legal as it meets sound and exhaust exit location rules. I'll make sure to ask techs if i can open it next time I race. thanks for your time thouhg.

Also, I agree with old man river, no way does that exit behind the driver if the dump is opened up.

I think this is a sad reflection on our sport. As mentioned, the noise of an open dump is obvious. He can run with it closed and be sent packing if he opens it.
It is like putting your EDFC controller in the trunk. You are making sure someone doesn't use the illegal capability. With EDFC it is by putting the controller out of reach - with this it is because the noise gives him away.
Sure the open dump is a safety issue. So is dangerous driving on course, speeding in grid, smoking near the cars, spectating in the hot areas, etc. People are asked to leave if they create a safety problem. If this guy opens his dump and creates a safety problem, he's asked to leave too. If he's cool and leaves it closed for the entire event, I don't see a safety issue.
I understand that a strict interpretation of the rules will allow us to throw him out of the sport or make him change his exhaust, whether he co-operates or not, but why the heck would anyone want to do that at a local event?

ghouk the SCCA and their rules. When the SCCA first started publicizing their national rallyx plans & posting their ever-changing rules a couple of years ago, I had suggested that we adopt them for our series. I now see the folly of that suggestion. I hadn't really thought much about it, and just figured it would be easier for locals to prep cars for a potential national series if we used the same rules. But I'd rather have it our way than potentially hear any of this bull**** at local events.
Damn! Arguments like this are why I don't autocross any more. I like the way my (and Fred's) local club does classification: 4wd, 2wd big displacement, 2wd small displacement, street tire, rally tire. That's it. All of the modifications in the world mean about 1% next to those 6 gross classifications. The SCCA has opened a nasty bag of worms with their silly prep rules and opened the door to annoying arguments like this one.

Agreed! The SCCA would be wise to adopt such a classing strategy. I'm sure they will keep what they have under the (false) presumption that it keeps costs down. They never saw the Dirtmaster 1500 (is that thing still going?) in action with it's glorious 54whp in action.

Hey, Vincent Keene drove the General Lei (a 70hp 89 Nissan Sentra POS for those who don't know it) to 3rd overall at the rallyx on Saturday. Only Dustin & I were faster, both in NO4 cars. He did have a dry course to the AWD cars' wet course, though. But there were plenty of "superior" cars in the 2wd classes that got smoked by a POS.
And the deceptively plain RS was faster than the 07 WRX on the one fun run I took with it. (I need to learn how to drive the WRX better)

Right, but that still makes rallysquirrel's statement a little alarmist, and unnecessarily scares people away from ice racing. AMEC used to have a time trial style event were you competed for the best lap on your own. They dropped that, but they still have a street class that is fun and relatively safe. I haven't been able to do one of their wheel to wheel races myself, but my car has - I let my co-driver run my old 2.5RS and he had no problems at all. I'd run my rally car, but I don't qualify for street class because I don't have an interior and I'm not up for the studded classes.
There is always the Boston BMW club that does auto-x style ice races in NH, there's no contact there.
Driving your car out on the lake for an ice race is weird for the first 5 minutes, then you get over it and have fun! The real ice racers drive their tow rigs out and park all lined up in the plowed out paddock. If a 2 ton pickup can go out there, you can too. They test the ice all week leading up to the event, and the call isn't made final until the day before (and I'm sure they test again that morning).

So now you are insulting my L?!!! :p
My RS was in decent shape when it did the wheel to wheel, and it came out the same way it went in. However, I've always gone into every event I run willing to bang up the car. I've had 4 "bumps" during motor sport events, and I've had 4 or 5 "bumps" in regular street accidents (mostly minor stuff), so I think the odds are pretty much the same on the street as off it.
