We need more women in racing part 3

turboICE 06-13-2006 11:55 AM

See now I am confused. Because if all of Cirrus' post and Impreziv's response are to be taken as valid and moved forward on - wouldn't "You just got beat by a girl" be completly counter and contradictory to the idea that everyone is just as capable to do well or do poorly in motorsports. As far as I can see the sticker is only relevant when the attitude that a girl can't do as well as a guy is accepted as accurate - if we are all just as capable of doing well then being beat by a girl shouldn't mean much at all. Certainly it should have no more bearing than being beat by a guy, right?

The sticker perpetuates the idea that girls are inferior drivers by inferring that being beat by a girl the other driver must be really inferior.

[grammar cop]Actually it implies that being beaten by a girl is inferior, you infer it.[/gc] :)

Ever hear of 'joking around' and 'having fun'? That's the whole point of the decal in question... especially with the national level FS crowd.

And it looks eerily similar to "You just got beat by a wagon :p" Oh... wait, the same guy made them. Should there be equal rights for more wagons in motorsports?
jcroy66 06-13-2006 12:10 PM

No!! No wagons allowed at this here race! Gotta beat down the wagons! No equal rights!!

KC yes apparently so - hey what do expect after thirty years of liberals beating into our heads that jokes and having fun hurts - because underlying all the humor is h8.

But apparently you weren't able to infer the humor in my response either - ever hear of joking around?

And the best part of all was the reaction of my male codriver (Jerry Grigg) when I put that sticker on the car at Nationals last year....

"I should have brought my 'Follow Me to Hooters' magnetics."

:D
I think this sticker is funny. I do not feel threatened or discriminated against. I might feel bad about losing to a Camaro, depending on the circumstances, but sometimes all you can do is lose...

Unfortunately, if the sticker said "you just got beat by a white hetero able-bodied man" there would be no humor seen in it, unless you really are tolerant, gender-liberated and color-blind. ACLU is not, nor are the vast majority of "liberals" who loudly claim to be.

I agree that the racers I have met generally are the most open-minded, interesting, interested...genuinely joyful people I have met since relocating to CA. I am sure there are plenty of nice people out there, but I wouldn't put the above "WHAM" sticker on my car as likely it would be vandalized by more socially conscious people than me. Not at the track, no one would care, but parked on the street.

I have a US flag and a TX flag. So far so good, but I expect that will set some clod off sometime, and probably it will be the US flag that does it. The TX flag will be unrecognized. I am cynical, true.

Let's just all go out and race. Celebrate the winners and all those who try honestly to the best they can afford and do.

George

Yeah and I bet you like the smell of your own farts now too and drive a Toyota Pious, right?

Good natured ribbing is always welcome, and like I said above, I think anybody on this thread is perfectly aware of appropriate behavior, we just gotta keep an eye on the numbskulls who frequent events who show up to the autox wearing nomex suits with engorged male genetallia, and an ego bigger than KC's*

*i keed i keed!! :D

I'd like to throw my 2cents in, as I drag my wife to autocross just about every weekend. Three examples:

First, the other competitors have been VERY good to her - they always offer to instruct, and are generally very classy towards her (with some notable exceptions). However, the other guys know I am there, and that while a nice guy, I have a sizeable temper, so they normally don't say anything ungentlemanly toward her.

Second, on the flip side, one of best friends brings his wife out to auto-x - and she's getting DAMN good. She is also beautiful, and an aspiring model. She gets hit on, left and right, even with her husband there. People are absolute dicks about it. Her husband is very, very nice about it, and doesn't do what I would do - club them with a tire iron - to his credit. To her credit, she deflects everything gracefully.

Third, I brought a single female friend out to autocross. She's fairly cute, and as soon as people found out she is single, they were hitting on her left and right, by dirtbags twice her age, in obnoxious ways.

I see it could be very tough to be a girl out at motorsports events. My wife won't go to events without me, and I hate that. Oh well, I'm just glad she comes out.
