just a suggestion...dont even know if its possible...maybe those of you thinking to remove tar sound deadening can sandblast? seal and tape entire dash, any other panels you dont want sand in, park it somewhere outside, rent a gas compressor and pressure tank sand blaster???

The cold and a rubber mallet will take care of most of the stuff on the inside of the cabin.
2shea 11-30-2009 07:47 PM

I think you all would consider me a feak as I have added at least 150 lbs of sound deadening and stereo to my car but I drive it every day and love to rock out. I just added a bunch of torque and horesepower to my car to make up the difference. Never been to the track though I would love to try it. I think if I got serious about the track I would buy a second car and make it track only. Having a street / track car waters both of them down like a dual sport bike which does neither dirt nor street well. Just my 2 cents.
fallehero_08 01-05-2010 02:44 AM

has everyone dropped this hunk of metal yet??
http://www.northursalia.com/modifications/drivetrain/weight/weight.html
BIGSKYWRX 01-05-2010 09:53 AM

I haven't as that's what I use for a jacking point from the front- it isn't really heavy, but if your not using it- I'd say get rid of it (and the four bolts) :)
fallehero_08 01-05-2010 07:04 PM

i dropped mine as soon as i found out about it. i use the front subframe with a 2x4 when im changing the oil. other then that, all work is done on a drive on lift, or a 2 post. both of which i can use as i please.

i also just started removing my tar today. i will be replacing it with lightweight dynamat. i also have a carbon fiber hood on the way and my c west front bumper is being painted. along with that install they will be putting in a oswald rear bumper bar and a jdm front. i have whiteline steering rack bushings sitting right here which all around should make for a sick feel. i relocated the battery about a month ago too. that really made a difference.
dobie0791 01-18-2010 05:14 PM
that is the reason the USDM beams are larger/heavier

Japan does have low speed impact standard, but not as stringent as the US one

on the GC/GF the Japan models replace heavier beams for lighter ones front and rear, on the GD/GG the Japan models a lighter front beam is used and no beam in the rear

not sure on the newest GH/GR
What about the EDM Impreza (GD)? Did they get the JDM bumper beam or the USDM one? If EDM Imprezas get the JDM one, the USDM one is just for parking lot bumps, not higher speed crashes.
Does anyone know the answer?
BIGSKYWRX 01-18-2010 07:14 PM

not sure which one they got, maybe something even in between??????????
fallehero_08 01-19-2010 01:13 AM

why not go with oswald ones?? there a bit steep but you get what you pay for.
68Cadillac 04-22-2010 09:02 PM

The weight reduction bug has me.

Did a lot of work and kept track of most things i've done thus far. I wont' bother with the list because you've all read it before. The only really "big" thing I have left to do is the sound deadening tar.

I wanted to figure out exactly where I was at so I headed down to a CATS and weighed my roller-skate:

That's 3180 lbs with me and 3/8 tank of fuel.

I weigh 234 lbs according to the doctors electric scale 2 days prior.

So without me she weights 2946 lbs.

"Dry" she'd be 2897 lbs. Now by dry I mean no fuel at all. I've only ever been able to pump 12.9 gallons in when the fuel gauge reads 0 and the lights been on a while. But the tank is rated for 15.9. Looks like she still has 3 gallons at 0/8 fuel gauge indication. Assuming gasoline fuel weights about 6.2 lbs per gallon. ( (3/8 * 12.9gal) + 3gal) * 6.2lbs/gal = 48.6 lbs.

A full tank of fuel would weigh 15.9gal * 6.2lbs/gal = 98.6 lbs

I read a thread once where the OP wanted to know the rare weight reduction modifications people did. After the weigh-in I got to thinking about the mounting points for the front subframe brace that has long since been removed. Did I really need those anymore?

So one 4 1/2" grinder, a spot weld remover bit, and several hours later:

Just finished removing the Rail Fang. I don't know what else to call it. Useless weight: gone.

OMGWTFBBQ!

The official weigh-in on the shop food scale. For both sides that's 3.25 lbs!

Then I got to thinking about the captured nut bracket just behind the Rail Fang that's no longer in use for the same reason. It's welded to the front anti-sway bar mounting horn on the front x-brace/engine cradle.

This guy was a bitch to get off. The welds are in funny locations making it difficult to get the grinder in. I eventually had to cut it in two to make the job easier.

Weigh-in. For both that's 1.125 lbs.

So I'm now down to 2941.625 with 3/8 tank fuel or 2892.625 dry.
u2_m4r1n3 04-22-2010 09:07 PM

Nice, I'm working on dropping weight as well. I was at 3150 (officially) before I put my carbon shell seats in. I'm thinking I'm around 3120 or so. That's without me in the car, full tank. So I guess dry, I would be at about 3015 lbs.

Oh, looking to get a FMIC, which will add a tad bit, but it weights about as much as the front bumper beam, so in reality at least I'm lowering the center of gravity. With that, it will remove the stock BOV, so whatever all that weighs.

Also throwing a carbon hood on, scoopless. 21lbs off there.

then get a lightweight battery, brallie 21lb'er. Not sure what stock weights. Thinking I might relocate to the back of the car, but I'm not sure exactly how much the wires running back there will add to the weight. Any idea there?

Crank pulley, weighing in at 3.2 lbs, stock being 5.7 lbs.

Girodisc rotors, dropping 5.5 lbs on each front wheel and 4.5 lbs on each rear wheel.

Carbon hatch, 16lbs off.

Carbon WRC style mirrors... not sure how much, but I'm guessing around 3-5 lbs each side. (maybe more)

Not too sure about this yet, but thinking of getting a brake servo kit (from rallispec.com), should cut 5-10 lbs off.

And I'm looking into lexan windows (scratch resistant with outside protection film). Just the rear windows, not the windshield of course.

I want to do a custom rear bumper beam, but not sure where to start. I'm not so sure I just want to take it off.

Plan is to have all that done When I get back from working at the end of the year, into early next year. I should be sitting around 2990 lbs (guessing on the weight of each item). So far all my guesses before I do the weight reduction, have been higher than what it actually is, so hopefully I'm lower than that. Do you have any other suggestions?

So I'm now down to 2941.625 with 3/8 tank fuel or 2892.625 dry.
I looked up the official curb weight of my wagon right off the ship: 3165. I actually had to look up what curb weight included. You think you know something?

Curb weight (US English) or Kerb weight (UK/Commonwealth English) is the total weight of a vehicle with standard equipment, all necessary operating consumables (e.g. motor oil and coolant), a full tank of fuel, while not loaded with either passengers or cargo.

Source: Wikipedia

So my calculated curb weight is now: 2991.225 so I've lost 173.775 lbs of curb weight. Double. Dancing. Banana.:banana:

Now how am I going to lose 92 lbs?

Mechie3 04-23-2010 04:49 PM

I took the oem manifolds and ground off all the tabs used to mount heat shields. Some of them are thin and not much mass, others are about 3/4" diameter at the end flaring out to over an inch and about 2 inches long.
68Cadillac 04-23-2010 10:16 PM

Lost a bit more.

Took the transmission vibration damper off. 1 3/16 lbs.

Because my Green Brackets of Death are long gone having the mounting tab on the upper coolant tank bugged me. So..

It's 2 pounds even (empty) and without the cap.

****. All that effort and only lost 3/16 lbs. :diaf:

These hoses had some slack in them that could be removed.

Extra upper coolant tank hose slack removed. And one plastic coupler. 2/16 lbs.

Realized this this part of the right front fender liners was still on. With out the Rail Horns it was just flapping 'round. Surprisingly heavy at 3/16 lbs.

Rear cross member vibration dampers were next.

A little hard to get a socket in there with it still on the car.

1 11/16 lbs. WOW.

And last in my weight loss adventure the front cross member jacking plate. 1 1/16 lbs. I recall that someone else took this off their car and said it weighed 5 lbs. **** if I didn't use a scale everything that came off would weigh at least 5 lbs.

All together that's 4 7/16 lbs (4.4375) removed.

Which means my curb weight (full of fuel) is down to 2986.7875. Dry weight would be: 2888.1875
spoolnbugeye 04-23-2010 10:54 PM

i took the sound denting material out under my carpet, removed my carpet, took back seat out, all the spare tire and jack and all that jazz, cover over spare tire, middle seat belt & buckle. handles better.. gonna remove the sound denting material under the door sills, look into a lightweight battery, and carbon fiber hood & trunk. and then see what all else I can do. i got catless up & downpipes, catback exhaust, intake silencer delete.
TuTudtee 04-24-2010 11:44 AM
tar and sound deadening material comes out to almost 30 pounds in the 02's and i would assume the later years are about the same
My legacy bg 30+lbs came out !
spinnaker226 04-24-2010 05:09 PM

ripped out the power steering, AC, cruise control, ABS, back seat, sound deadening material/tar, spare tire, almost all of the plastic covers on and around the motor......

sold the heavy rs hood and got a wrx one for cheap (somewhat lighter and i get the cool factor with a functional hoodscoop), lightweight flywheel, lightweight pulleys...

cant tell how much poundage has been ripped out because i can always find something else to remove.
Deuce Cam 04-24-2010 10:21 PM

I just read through this whole thing and I'd like to comment on a few things:

1. The STI does not have any sound deadening tar on the inside of the vehicle - something to consider if you were worried about removing yours.

2. The front bumper beam is not needed to support the bumper, at least on 06-07 models (I can't say for certain on other years). I just installed the 06-07 jdm front bumper beam with the foam energy absorber and it doesn't touch the inside of the bumper whatsoever when installed.

3. Although expensive nobody has mentioned getting a carbon fiber roof. AMS has one for $1300 that shaves 16lbs. off the very top of the car.

4. Switching to an oil cooled only turbo will allow you to delete the upper coolant tank.

4. To the dude who got the floor mounted tilton pedals: I realize you posted many years ago but holy **** that's awesome. How much was that setup? Pics?

Edit: Bozz speed makes a lightweight replacement floor bar for the piece that goes under the rear seat. Japanparts.com sells it for $205 but unfortunately no details are listed, and the bozz website is all in Japanese.

What would I need to do to go oil cooled on my car? (09 STI)
What would I need to do to go oil cooled on my car? (09 STI)
Unfortunately I don't have all the details but you'd likely need an oil cooled only turbo, and you'd also need to relocate some coolant lines. (You can run only oil through an oil AND water cooled turbo but it's not recommended.)

Here's a diagram for a Suby cooling system without the upper coolant tank (I'm not sure what year/model this is from):

Did a bit more:

Since I removed the cruise control I no longer needed the extra throttle cable mount.

So I ground the extra off. Lost 1/16 pound

Haven't used the rear wiper in years. The wiper blade was missing the squeegee edge even. Lets over-estimate and call this 2 13/16 lbs.

Throttle cable support. Replaced with a ziptie (to the oil filler neck). Under-estimate to 1/16 lbs

Relocated two electrical ground wire points from the intake manifold to existing bolts on the upper coolant tank and intercooler support arm, allowing me to remove two bolts and lose 1/16 lbs.

That's another 3 pounds (even) removed.

Which means my curb weight (full of fuel) is down to 2983.7875. Dry weight would be: 2885.1875

Muuuhaha

This days I am at around 2840lbs :disco:
and if you got lighter wheels youd be at 2820. and thats being conservative. get some kosei k1's and youd be at 2800 with the right tires.

AND thats rotating mass, lost weight where it counts!

not to mention the 20 lbs of sideskirt, spats, lip, and aeroguard
68Cadillac 05-12-2010 04:22 PM

Bit the bullet and decided to take the sound deadening out of the car. That was a job and all those factory zipties under the dash went slasher movie on my skin.

You can't really get it all out unless you take the dash and HVAC out.

I took the dash out but left the HVAC in. Too many connections to remove, and it didn't want to risk damaging the refrigerant lines. No AC in the desert is bad times.

I estimate that there's about 14/16 lbs of padding still behind my HVAC.

And about 3/16 lbs of the sound deadening tar on the top of the transmission tunnel, under the HVAC.

Overall I removed:
24.0 lbs of sound padding,
8.6 lbs of sound deadening tar,
1.6 lbs of carpet padding, and
0.1 lbs of all of the above but in dust form. This is an estimate. If you've ever tried to take it all out you know that some of it breaks up into tiny little bits of sound deadening or padding "dust". You just end up vacuuming it out.

So the grand total ended up weighing 34.3 lbs. Sweet Neil deGrasse Tyson, that's a lot of mass removed!

If I was able to get the stuff blocked by the HVAC it would have ended up weighing ~35.4 lbs

I didn't get a picture of them but with the carpet up and out I found 0.25 lbs of coins, toys, cheerioes, and other detritus/debris

Current Mass of my Subaru
2949.2375 lbs: curb weight (full of fuel), or
2850.6375 lbs: dry weight (no fuel)

Relocated my MP3 player to avoid have the 2/16 lb bracket in. Two reasons. 1. weight loss 2. passengers would bump their knee on the player. So out it came.

It's a BRAT for the '90s!

I didn't see this mentioned in the thread yet, but has anyone tried the CF wagon hatch, and if so what was the weight difference?
kennedye 07-09-2010 05:27 PM

Also, how much weight can be taken out of the drivetrain? Things like magnesium or carbon driveshafts, axles, gearsets, etc. A lighter transmission case? Maybe even removing a gear (if it's a trailered autocrosser only, I guess you could get away with pulling 4th and 5th)?

I have one and like it, http://www.rallysportdirect.com/shop/acpt-subaru-wrx-0207-carbon-drive-shaft-p-4682.html

About 15# weight savings. Don't know about tranny cases, magnesium and such but you could contact RalliSpec. It would be mega dollar.

I don't know if a chromoly or aluminum flywheel was mentioned or not.
fallehero_08 07-10-2010 09:28 PM

took out the cruse control assembly today, and cut back a bunch of hoses, hid a bit of wiring and took off the front subframe and installed a h brace.

does anyone know if its easy to get to the cruise control brain/computer?

also, i have a 9lb aluminum flywheel... its a blast to drive and track, but i would not recommend anything lighter then the name brand lightened ones. it makes traffic even more of a nightmare. i kill it at least once a month and sometimes pulling up to stoplights/stopsigns it will have issues. i feel like im driving my dads elise, just more touchy. i wonder if a lighter drive shaft will make it easier to engage.

I have a light crank pulley and the ACPT CF driveshaft but not yet a lightened flywheel. My experience is that it hangs on to revs too long and I look forward to getting the lightened flywheel as it'll match better. I'll bet the CF driveshaft would improve your situation.
