Weight Reduction part 15

gtasti 01-18-2011 11:14 PM
I've removed my airbags and all associated wiring, computer, sensors, etc
Same with ABS
was the removal of the air system easy how long did it take you to do
69subaru360 01-18-2011 11:21 PM

On my 95 airbag removal was simple. I got a 93 dash without airbag and a 91 Legacy steering wheel without airbag. Canadian and JDM imprezas without airbag used this same wheel. You need the matching non airbag turn signal switch. Then I just removed the computer sensors and all the wiring.

Mine didn't come with abs but I did remove the power brake booster.
Splinter 01-18-2011 11:28 PM
was the removal of the air system easy how long did it take you to do
I had my whole car stripped so that made it pretty easy, but the airbag system is kept isolated from other systems in the car, with its own wiring harness and everything, so it's pretty easy to remove.

Basically anything with a yellow connector or a yellow loom :)

If your car doesn't work after, don't blame me. My car is a 98.
Wrx.CHRIS.Wrx 01-19-2011 01:06 AM

today i removed all of the
sound deadening under the carpet
rubber mat on the fire wall
plate in the glove box door
moved bat to trunk
is there anything ealts u guys would sugest removing for weight?

heres a pic of all the **** off the firewall and the trans hump...damn what a long drawn out process

gtasti 01-19-2011 10:54 AM

Nice work how hard was it to remove ur havoc controls ? I didn't remove mine when I did that I just pulled as much as possible out
Wrx.CHRIS.Wrx 01-19-2011 01:59 PM

it was actully really easy once u get the crash bar out the heater came right out
gtasti 01-19-2011 02:13 PM

^^^^^^ ok thanks

if i remove the air bags I'll post up here how it went and if the car still runs :)
Wrx.CHRIS.Wrx 01-19-2011 02:16 PM

gtasti 01-19-2011 02:21 PM

thats a good idea

gtasti 01-19-2011 03:17 PM

ok so do it and you let me know :)

I've removed all seat belts in the rear as well
I've pretty much removed whatever i can from the rear seat back that isnt welded on..
not sure how to remove parts that are spot welded on drilling isnt a good idea i've done this to the hooks that hold the wood in place for the jack arm thing had to silicone the holes after :(
Wrx.CHRIS.Wrx 01-19-2011 03:36 PM

ahah how i have no engine in the car to know if it wull start and run ahah
Wrx.CHRIS.Wrx 01-20-2011 07:54 PM

Wrx.CHRIS.Wrx 01-21-2011 03:15 PM

ahahah alright
Spanky02 01-22-2011 11:55 PM

Honeycomb rear beam
For thos who don't want to completely remove their OEM rear beam you can try this. 9lb total weight using OEM beam brackets welded to a piece of steel honeycomb rectangle stock. Found it in an aviation junkyard and decided to get rid of the 28lb OEM beam. IMHO I believe this is stronger than the two aluminum beams on the market for our cars and only 2-3 more lbs. Let me know what you think. Instead of the "5mph" OEM beam, mine may be a "4 mph" beam but its worth the 19 lbs savings to me. It also ties the rear of the car together which makes me feel better haha

gtasti 01-23-2011 12:44 AM

thats a pretty neat idea there
also well money saved
stidoc 01-23-2011 08:53 AM

That is a decent idea. Only issue is that it is probably too low to provide meaningful crash protection.
Spanky02 01-23-2011 10:39 AM

Agreed unless I get hit by a vette. All the SUV's out there were pretty much screwed
stidoc 01-23-2011 11:10 AM
Agreed unless I get hit by a vette. All the SUV's out there were pretty much screwed
Yep, that goes for the OEM bumper too.
THE_SMURF 01-23-2011 12:10 PM

fortunatelty i never really had a close call in my 09 or 11 wrx and removing the front bumper beam for the fmic wasnt an issue for me. so losing the rear one isnt going to be a problem either. i know 28 pounds isn't much, but when added to the weight seving of the entire trunk area and a CF trunk . . . . .ooohhh yea baby, cant wait to get some extra money for that trunk lid :(
stidoc 01-23-2011 05:32 PM

Actually 28 lbs is a big chunk for one weight-loss mod and because it's beyond the wheels it makes that much more of a difference.
u2_m4r1n3 01-23-2011 08:39 PM

I'm planning on getting the Cusco rear "bumper beam". Looks like its only a few pounds, so it should definitely make a difference.
Spanky02 01-23-2011 09:50 PM

Cusco makes one for 08+ only I believe
u2_m4r1n3 01-23-2011 09:58 PM

That's why I'm getting it ;-)
stidoc 01-23-2011 10:01 PM

Meh, why bother.
Spanky02 01-23-2011 10:02 PM

I have 04 so I couldn't do that ha
u2_m4r1n3 01-23-2011 10:06 PM

Hmm... weight reduction maybe....
stidoc 01-24-2011 06:01 AM
Hmm... weight reduction maybe....
I meant why bother with the aftermarket beam at all.
u2_m4r1n3 01-24-2011 09:04 AM
I meant why bother with the aftermarket beam at all.
Ah, lol. helps eliminates the little flex that can happen back there.
68Cadillac 01-24-2011 06:03 PM

Guess I should look in the cargo hatch area a bit more

Found this guy tucked into his OEM spot ready to operate the scissor jack that isn't in the wagon anymore. 0.370 kg (0.814 lbm) removed

Yes, I tared out the Irwin clamp.

Removed the plastic gravel barriers from the front of the fuel tank. Both side including hardware: 0.214 kg ( 0.472 lbm)

Fuel tank filler neck plastic gravel protection in right rear wheel well. That baggie holds the hardware. 0.236 kg (0.520 lbm)

EVAP system. Including everything but the hard line that runs over the top of the fuel tank. 4.080 kg! (8.995 lbm)

Yes that 4.080 includes the hard line that runs from the engine to the rear.

By itself it's 0.320 kg (0.705 lbm)

Yes, I tared out the Irwin clamp (again).

So a productive weekend of mass removal. Altogether removed 4.900 kg of mass (10.802 lbm). I also replaced my PCV valve which was stuck closed causing multiple strange oil leaks all over the engine. I had oil leaking from the TOP of the block, the turbo return line, the front main seal, the oil filter, etc. Replace the PCV valve with a new one and no more leaks!

Current Mass of my Subaru
1 305.511 kg (2878.159 lbm): curb weight (full of fuel), or
1 261.240 kg (2780.559 lbm): dry weight (no fuel)

Total mass removed: 130.110 kg (286.842 lbm)
elpedro 01-24-2011 06:08 PM

nice work
68Cadillac 02-01-2011 04:16 PM

A man with hole saws, a grinder, and a desire for a lighter vehicle mass is a scary creature.

The A/C pump support bracket has always mocked me. It sits there in all it's heavy steel glory taunting me as a look for new ways to remove things from my wagon.

So I took it off and had at it. 384 grams to start.

Ground off three tabs and made 3 1/2 holes with a 22 mm hole saw. Leaving 242 grams to reinstall.

After I paint it.

Drive away,

142 grams lighter (0.313 lbm), and looking good.

"Why don't you remove the whole A/C system?" you ask. I live in Vegas, fool.

Current Mass of my Subaru

This makes me want to go outside and start taking more off of my car... Sitting at about 3200 lbs, full tank (3360 lbs stock with BBS wheels).

I have A LOT of work to do...

I want to be below 3000 lbs by the end of the year.

Do it.

My goal is to see my dry weight at or below 2699 lbm. Only 81 lb to go.
Do it.

I think I'm going to, there is always something that doesn't necessarily HAVE to be on/in the car... lol.

Nice, you're very very close!
evolutionman 02-01-2011 07:21 PM

i don't know if it's on the STI but on Porsches there's a metal plate just above the rear window. sound deadening and weighs around 5 lb.s
disclaimer: your rear windshield WILL rattle more.
A-man07 02-01-2011 07:43 PM

^^^There isn't .
u2_m4r1n3 02-01-2011 09:05 PM

But we can take "sound deadening" tar crap off the floor... pain in the butt from what I hear.

Still need to do it myself, any special secret to it?

Do it when it's below freezing. It just flakes off. If it's hot out try dry ice.
Do it when it's below freezing. It just flakes off. If it's hot out try dry ice.
Dry ice is how I did mine.
u2_m4r1n3 02-01-2011 09:43 PM

Sweet, dry ice it is. Where can it be found?

Checking Google now, too.
u2_m4r1n3 02-01-2011 09:48 PM

What is the technique behind it?
68Cadillac 02-01-2011 10:21 PM
What is the technique behind it?
0. Remove interior to get at the floor and transmission tunnel
1. break dry ice in to large chucks with at least one good size flat side; place dry ice chunks on sound deadening tar panel
2. wait until you hear the tar "cracking" and the frequency of the cracking begins to slow
3. move dry ice to next tar panel
4. beat on first tar panel with dead blow hammer; do not beat on the dry ice chunks
5. remove super cold tar
6. go to step 2.
WEAR THICK GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES, FOOL.

I did mine at the start of summer and used about 20 lbs of dry ice. Bought it at Vons, a supermarket chain just down the steet.

Altogether I removed 8.6 lb of sound deadening tar.
u2_m4r1n3 02-01-2011 11:04 PM

Cool, thanks! I'll be sure to wear gloves and eye pro, fool! Haha.

That's quite a bit of weight too, hopefully I'll pull that or more out.
68Cadillac 02-03-2011 01:13 AM

Remembering what I went through to remove all the sound deadening reminded me of an item I'd put on my mental list.

Underneath the protective aluminum cover for the ECU is:

This steel frame that supports the ECU and it's aluminum cover. Mass of 570 grams.

2 hours, a hole saw, a step drill bit, and a grinder later: 421 grams.

Reinstall 149 grams (0.328 lbm) lighter.

Current Mass of my Subaru
1305.22 kg (2877.518 lbm): curb weight (full of fuel), or
1260.949 kg (2779.917 lbm): dry weight (no fuel)

Total mass removed: 130.401 kg (287.485 lbm)
u2_m4r1n3 02-03-2011 02:49 AM

I put my Ecu in the glovebox... no bracket needed ;)
u2_m4r1n3 02-03-2011 02:55 AM

Tomei EL headers and up pipe put on today.... not sure of total mass drop, but I believe it could be around the 15lbm range.
Kentrik 02-03-2011 04:42 AM

68, I love how you're lightening all the brackets. It reminds me of how Anorexic started going through the engine bay and switching up a bunch of the brackets for other things, like Zipties. I think I'm gonna start digging through my entire car to figure out what all brackets I can remove mass from without weakening them. Sweet idea. :D

So probably 2 lbs/1 kg total for the ECU bracket and cover. You've given me an idea to just relocate the ECU a bit farther up the firewall with industrial strength velcro. Thanks

The aluminum ECU cover is 394 grams plus the bracket at 570 grams. 964 altogether and that doesn't include the hardware (7 nuts and 1 screw)

I think the hardware would push it to a full kilo. So 2.204 lbm.
Str8Gone 02-03-2011 06:53 PM

I like this thread, I cant wait to get my car weighed.
u2_m4r1n3 02-03-2011 09:48 PM

Fmic and scoopless carbon hood going on this weekend. Oh, and air pump delete.. That's a few pounds.
Kentrik 02-10-2011 08:12 AM

Ok, on the subject of rotational mass - has anyone on here done BOTH lightweight flywheel AND lightweight crank pulley? I have been told time and again by people that the combination of the two makes you throw CONSTANT misfire CEL's, but they only can tell me that because a buddy or a buddy OF a buddy was the one that had that issue.

Can anybody tell me FOR SURE why it would be a bad idea to use the two in tandem? I've got an Exedy flywheel, and have been thinking about either a Cobb or Perrin pulley, but that's what's holding me back...
BeBop86 02-10-2011 12:24 PM

I've got a perrin lwcp and an ACT streetlite flywheel and I don't throw any codes...

I think it's the later years that are sensative.
68Cadillac 02-10-2011 12:53 PM
but they only can tell me that because a buddy or a buddy OF a buddy was the one that had that issue.
That's all I've ever heard of it too. Just knuckleheads repeating what they heard.
Can anybody tell me FOR SURE why it would be a bad idea to use the two in tandem?
I plan on eventually doing this. My plan is to run an ACT prolite flywheel in tandem with the Unorthodox brand under-driven lightweight pulley I'm already running. If a CEL comes up from it. I'll just have the ECU ignore that CEL code. ROMRaider!

That Prolite flywheel is so tempting along with a Drive Shaft Shop Aluminum drive shaft. Dolla dolla bills.
