lotsa real dumb things goin on in this thread
the dumbest thing is people thinkin its s000 k000 to drive a race car on the street...which is the heart of ALL rice
that is just the dumbest thing that I can think of
there are many ways of making the car a lot better...lighter...without being so bloody bleeding fanatical about it
Ahh...so race cars are now rice? Man you say the dumbest things sometimes.
I guess I'm smarter then everyone here since I started with an already light car instead of removing everything to make it light. I would be pissed to be that heavy.

The reinforcement webbing from a steel RS hood weights 3-4 pounds. I removed it from a spare hood I had to see if it was worth it on my good one. Its not worth the effort like alot of things around here. :D

Can't say I'd ever do that. I've read horror stories with flexing and buckling. I guess if you really need to shave 4lbs that's better then a diet. haha. My next step before I paint the car will be aluminum hood, lightweight front and rear bumper beams, and if they make them aluminum trunk or carbon fiber but that would be painted.

Cops.
You go through a roadblock with a gutted interior and your chances of being pulled over for a closer look go up 10000%.
Apparently I'm super duper lame because I want to have a very fast car to race but I can't afford to have a truck and trailer to take it to the track for me. I can live with Uncle Scotty thinking I'm lame. I'm not even sure that's an insult. Kinda like a kid with Down's syndrome telling you he hates your shoes.
I want to have my car as fast as possible and make it stick out as little as possible. That means full interior and quiet exhaust. Yes its still obvious my car is modified, but not to the extent where it'll attract unwanted attention.
Fun fact: I have another car to drive, I don't have to commute in this thing.

Don't know if it's a Canadian thing but I can't say I go through to many "road blocks" where cops search your car. Closest thing to that is a dui check point I went through once and they just pointed me to keep going. lol

dui checks, seatbelt checks, cellphone checks
Just because you're not doing something they are specifically looking for doesn't mean they won't pull you over. Canada has a big hate-on for cars in general, and it's evidenced in the policing of modified cars.
You go through a seatbelt check and you've got a gutted interior? The cop can easily pull you over and give you an inspection ticket.

Man that sucks. I'd hate to live there. My friend worked for Pratt & Miller and was going up to a alms race in Canada and wouldn't let him and another co-worker in because they had "work boots" in the back. They asked him why they had them he told them because it was supposed to rain. The boarder guy looked at him funny and said that race cars don't race in the rain and refused them entry. What a holes.

I hope you got lucky and yours doesn't make the decel noise. I've been through two flywheels and two transmissions and still have the noise. Once I swap out the block I'll be going with the stock flywheel with no more noise. haha

Since my last post in here I have removed my fog lights and hella supertones, also replaced u-brace with h-brace and using the Oswald wrx undertray mount kit to keep my plastic tray.
My goal is to remove 100kg from stock weight and I estimate I have already removed 54kg, not much to photos to show really but I thought what I did tonight was pretty cool.
On the left are the brackets that hold up the evap system at the rear of the car, on the right are my homemade brackets I made using some leftover aluminium bar from my fire extinguisher bracket.

I don'y have any scales at the moment so I cant tell you what the factory brackets weigh but my DIY brackets weigh a fraction of OEM.
Installed, its very solid.

There really isn't a huge difference. I was actually surprised that it wasn't really louder, but it definitely took like 10 lbs off (maybe a tad bit more).
Removing the transmission tunnel sound proofing made a bigger difference; I can definitely hear my trans pretty well. But, at least to me, doesn't really bother.

ha ha the brackets allow it to be done up nice and tight instead of flopping around or rubbing on the underbody.

Uncle scotty hating really seems to be in now. Despite being a bit harsh, he generally seems to be right. Obsessing over weight reduction on a street car is pretty illogical. If this thread were in the motorsport section, I'm sure he wouldn't be judging, but these are your daily drivers. On a DD, the work involved in weight reduction is hardly proportionate to the reward.

For some they are daily drivers and for some of us they are not, even if they are street cars. Nonetheless, it is nice to have one thread for those of us who enjoy this kind of pursuit to be able to show off and compare. Because it is the internet, there will be judgement...but you'll get it right back.

Front bumper beam
Rear bumper beam (my car never had one, we didn'y get them in Oz.)
Battery
Front U-brace
Front seats
Aftermarket exhaust
wheels
2-piece front rotors (DBA5000)
Those are the bigger things, the rest is a lot of small things which do add up to a lot in the end. I didn't mention spare tire and jack because you really do need these as I found out recently with 2 punctures in one month, one of which destroyed my tire.

What I did or have and is planned:
-Racing seats
-Firewall insulation
-Insulation under carpet
-Single exit exhaust (muffler delete drops more lbs)
-Lightweight battery
-remove spare tire kit
-DD stereo (I removed mine)
-Carbon fiber hood
-carbon fiber/aluminum driveshaft (not installed yet)
-lightweight rotors (planned)

That obviously depends on whether you have an aluminum STI hood or steel WRX hood.
Lightweight rotors are fine as long as you know what they're limits are and your intended uses. I've been using The Brake Man 2 piece front rotors on the street for almost 2 years without a single issue and they have both the lightest top hats and rotors available. I use Girodisc 2 piece on the rear.

I have come to terms with the fact my Legacy is a tank and there isn't much I can do so I spent my time dropping as much rotational mass as I could and then removing weight from the higher points on the car and relocating heavier bits to lower COG areas.
DBA front 2 piece rotors are very nice as well
DBA Rotors are bolted and not directional vane. If you are lightening your car for better gas mileage and street use they are fine but if you are doing to attack the race track as hard as you can then get a set of 2pc floating directional vane rotors. They will cool better and not be as likely to warp when you start hammering on them.

Looking at the lower rad support brackets now, should be some good savings there as they are twice the size.

I just installed a Helix full Ti catback weighing 11.5 lbs. It replaced the greddy evo2 which weighed about 35lbs. It also got rid of that 2.5" taper that was on the greddy midpipe. Im sitting at about 2820lbs low on gas. I still need to remove my ac components.

Alot of lightness in this pic, aluminum DS and Ti midpipe.

The lightest DS available, ACPT CF DS, saves 10 lbs over stock (14 lbs total since you have to ditch the heavy protection plate as well). The aluminum one won't be more than 7, maybe less.
5% hp gain would be about 15hp on an STi. Not even close. I could barely feel it when I swapped mine out. Let's try to avoid hyperbole as most of these changes we make by themselves make only very small differences.

Some of those weights seem more drastic than i remember i have an aluminum one and I Hate it . Fitment is horrable you have to bang on this cut that blah blah. Should fit like a glove. Also mine causes a vibration from 80mph to 120mph that i have notice .I would take a stock Sti one over mine 10 times out of 10. The weight difference of mine was not more than a couple pounds . I also could have a poor quality one , i imagine quality control is not a high priorty search the forums and other people have had problems too.
I am Not trying to hate or be a jerk i just want to make fellow subaru owners aware of my experience.

The aluminum DS is lighter than the carbon but it a pita to fit properly. I managed to gain a tenth in the quarter by switching to alum DS. I run very consistent so I can notice small improvements.

So I took off the big horse shoe (u-brace) and drove around for a week with it removed while waiting for the h-brace to show up, didn't notice any difference without it except the steering feels lighter because I dropped another 11kg off the front end
The h-brace is not meant as a replacement for it, it is meant to bolt to it and tie it all together. What I have done is remove the u-brace altogether and use a couple of cheap sockets as spacers where the u-brace would usually be (see below).

I also bought one of these so I can still mount the plastic undertray http://oswaldperformance.com/WRXUNDERTRAYMOUNTKIT.aspx

I'm afraid you may have defeated the purpose of the H-brace by having to use the spacers (sockets). Under load you'll get lateral deflection there as the mounting tab isn't flush to an area of frame.
Whiteline makes a brace that can be used with the subframe removed.

I looked at the whiteline version (like yours) but because I have a 5-speed gearbox it means I would have to remove the brace each time I changed gearbox fluids and because the way it bolts up with the bolts that go through the front control arm bushings this would be a major PITA.
I could possible make up some better aluminum spacers that lock the brace against the chassis more in a lateral direction.

Took another 10kg out of the car today by removing the sound deadner. Didn't have time to take the dash out so just grabbed as much foam out as I could reach. How hard is it to take the dash out and will that enable me to get all the foam out?
