I assembled a pretty large list of parts weights for the GD STi. If anyone has additions plz let me know via PM and I can edit more parts in.

That looks a lot like Anorexic's list of weights.
| Donkeyno9 | 04-23-2011 06:48 AM |
I used his list as a base and added to it. I also reweighed parts on a postage scale for greater accuracy. I recognize you from IWSTI, your car is light :)
| JDwhiteWRX | 04-23-2011 07:25 AM |
I need to get mine on a scale and see where i'm at, I estimate 65kg reduction, my car is 1370kg stock.
Want to replace the both front seats next, some good weight savings there, I like the look of the sparco chrono sports.

Damn thanks for the tip, didn't think of that :(
Took another 10kg out of the car today by removing the sound deadner. Didn't have time to take the dash out so just grabbed as much foam out as I could reach. How hard is it to take the dash out and will that enable me to get all the foam out?
Dash is a straight forward removal if you just look for all the screws holding it in. Very time consuming though. You will most likely need to remove the HVAC to get all the sound deadening foam out. I literally took everything thing out except for the wiring harness. For example: dash, air box, hvac, steering column, dash support bar, and anything else connected to the dash.

Yep not hard just time consuming. HVAC will have to come out or at least moved to get all of the foam out.
To me, removal of the carpet on a street car would make it look ricey, ghetto, cheap, etc. The idea is to lower the weight while retaining taste. Besides, the sound deadener underneath the carpet gives us 20-25 lbs off but the carpet is relatively light in an Impreza.
the carpet got moldy from a leaky sunroof in the legacy, so we welded the roof an gutted the carpet and headliner. for how heavy a wagon is, i certainly notice the difference in weight reduction

a local subie guy ditched his factory subframe brace and installed a 4 point ladder bar brace made out of aluminum and man that knocked off like close to 50 lbs or maybe more and helped to stiffen his car up!

Does anyone know if you lose much as far as rigidity by removing the U-Brace from under the front? Or is the weight savings better worth it?

Since my stereo gear is gone and I had to remove my battery to get the sound deadner out I decided to swap the battery over to the passenger side which is where it should be really for better weight distribution. Also the fuse holder is nice and easy to get to now.

Also that bracket behind the e-brake that the center console screws into, I cut it off just in front of the two holes, the console is still nice and solid with half the bracket missing.

The front U-brace is installed for offset frontal collisions it is not designed to stiffen the chassis. You will lose a little stiffness, and by little I mean tiny.

That's what I thought but the 50lb claim confused me. I suppose I need to get used to a few people making BS claims. 25lbs is right, more or less with/without bolts and the plastic undertray.

I ran a trackday without the U brace and only a 4 point Cusco brace similar to the Whiteline's. The result was not good, there was so much flex in the front end it was terrible.
I ended up replacing both with a light weight Oswald performance brace. This was on a 04 STi

Yes this is what I'm worried about, I have a h-brace replacing mine and on the street it feels fine but I will be back at the track soon.
I added up some of my weight taken off today and estimate it at about 80kg (176lbs) less than kerb weight plus I removed 11kg of stereo gear. This is still with the spare tire, jack and tools in place.

I'm about to hit the track without my U brace and the subimods H brace installed, I'm thinking it will be fine. When I removed the u brace I noticed the mounts for the center 4 bolts are really flimsy and the front part of the brace is very flimsy. I cant see how it would add any stability at all. But I guess I will see soon.

You can reduce the weight of some brackets, but you might not want to remove some of them, unless you've got a fully caged car....the big plates under the driver's side and in the glovebox are designed to prevent your legs from going up into everything inside of the dash in case of a wreck.
There is a lot of stuff that you can do to reduce weight, but a lot of it may bring up safety issues as well.
I'm not running any heat shielding of any sort and I haven't had any problems. I think the same goes for most people with aftermarket exhausts...
The heat shielding I removed is fitted to the chassis not the exhaust so unless you removed it then you're running it or the GC8 doesn't have any.

Removed that too. Again, no problems. Also running a titanium catback, which isn't exhaust known for its heat retention!

You won't get any problems its just going to heat up the fuel in the tank a little.
Today I removed the green brackets over the injectors and replaced the power steering fluid resevior bracket with a home made one that weighs 35g. In the last 2 days I have removed 4.4kg

Has anyone considered switching to an electric power steering setup to conserve weight and to also free up one of the pulleys on the engine? I wonder how much difference that would make...
| BeBop86 | 05-10-2011 12:58 PM |
Kentrik, I was begining to look into it, it would take a much higher output alternator. Not sure if the added weight would be worth the free'd up HP.

Just thinking, why couldn't you bolt your strut bar up without spacers? What was the issue?

Its not a strut bar, its a lower arm bar.

You said you were removing your u-brace first and then bolting in that lower arm bar you posted a picture of. That bar is designed to bolt to the u-brace so without it you are going to need spacers to fill the gap, same problem I had when using a h-brace and no u-brace http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=34030261&postcount=40

I realize that, but I was looking for a specific reason. Being that the subframe is acting as a spacer, I'll assume the problem you had was the bolts being too long and needing a spacer to fill the gap. If this was the case, why not get shorter bolts?

Mine bolts up in 4 locations so its not like you can just use shorter bolts as once the rear bolts are torqued up it leaves a gap at the front.
For your bar it may not be an issue as you only have 2 mounting points, you may just be able to bolt it up, I'll be interested to see how you go.
Has anyone considered retrofitting a My08-11 plastic manifold, its got to be lighter and suffer less heat soak issues?

Just finished making a new cruise control support bracket, saved about half a kilo.

Still uses the rubber mounting grommets and is nice and firm.

Fuel filter bracket, not a huge saving but it all adds up. Also removed two brackets from the front doors.

That makes sense, for some reason I thought yours was just a bar too. I'll let you guys know how it fits.

Just thought I'd report back on this after taking my car to the track today, I knocked three tenths off my PB, also let one of the instructors drive my car and he was impressed with how well it handled, commented on its sharp turn-in.
So yeah I'm real happy with this mod, h-brace was only $35 plus shipping.

Ugh. Just got a nasty call from the reality police. Got my car up on some race scales, 2813lbs with a full tank of gas. 100lbs more than I calculated :(
Good news is that with me in the car, it was a 59f/41r weight distribution.

Tried to bolt up the JDM STi strut damper this weekend after removing my subframe. It's going to need a large washer for two reasons. First is that the bolt is too long and the threads stop halfway. The 2nd is due to the bar touching without the spacers.

The rear bar I had to "make" fit due to it not coming with the mounting brackets. The design is different so I needed to widen the bracket to accept it. I'll also get a large washer to fill the void.

Just curious, can you compress those dampers by pushing on them? Or are they stiff enough you couldn't do it by hand?
Just trying to figure out why you/they would use a damper instead of a rigid piece of metal as a brace.

You can't move them at all, extremely stiff. The reasoning is to offer a compliant ride over harsh surfaces while also giving quick responses like a solid strut bar.
