This is far outdated and forgive me for not reading every page but, the way to remove sound deadening from your car is with dry ice and a PLASTIC putty knife as metal one will scrape your car a lot. put the dry ice ont you stuff for about ten-fifteen mins and begin scraping. It shouldnt take much longer then 1-2 hours for your whole car. A vacuum or shop vac helps a lot when youre done ;)

drye ice the whole thing, i did it in sections. i put a large amount in a small area, it broke it free in 2 minutes, then i slowly move it while take off whats done.
then heat gun the stubborn white glue over the metal caps.
metal works good, then re-paint nice.
I have heard from several experienced racers that if you want to take the sound deadening tar out, the easiest way is to get some liquid nitrogen and pour it on the tar. Then the tar will just break right off.
Of course, you should be EXTREMELY careful when attempting this.
dry ice does the same thing, and is cheaper as you can move the dry ice around as you break out the tar. doesnt take much at all.

I'm sure it will add up to more than 2kg and he keeps records of everything so you might want to start wearing sandals. Now whether all his efforts are worth the saving well that's a personal thing.

Still pretty stupid. And someone who actually has a race car has certain requirements to meet as well as it's not always the fastest car that wins but who the better driver is. So the race car argument one isn't really a valid one.

sauce helps.
doesn't change my position though, all that effort, decrease of safety/increase that a component fails, lack of reversibility, lack of practicality etc etc all for less than 5kg?
if you went to work for the amount of time you've spent doing all that i'm sure you'd have enough extra coin to buy some aftermarket product that saves more than 5kg...

There are some people on nasioc who work on their cars because they LIKE working on their cars, not just because they want teh f4stest subroru with all the hottest carbon fibre parts.
I'd rather make something myself than buy an aftermarket part any day of the week. Any idiot can hand his credit card over to a shop and get them to work on their car.
At the end of the day though, we don't need to justify our actions to you. I removed my heater assembly yesterday. Know why? Cuz screw you, that's why.

I think a lot of these weight saving measures are extreme but the same can be said for many people's high horse power builds on the board that are purely a street car. I enjoy reading and seeing pictures of them just as much. I also like that many of these weight saving tips are inexpensive though they may cost a lot in time. I love tinkering with my car just for the sake of tinkering but as a family man money is prioritized else where. Please keep the eccentric weight saving coming, and get the thread back on topic.
On topic:
I removed my evap system from my MY95 swapped car this week, It saved a little weight and cleaned up the engine bay a bit more. Note: the system didn't work to begin with since I didn't swap gas tanks.

I'm continuing it on that car! Stock is 3415 lbs, I'm roughly at 3070 lbs now... with still plenty, plenty more to do!

Why didn't you shave some of those srew things on top... and just make a small aluminum bracket to extend off one of the bolt things them to hold all the lines? If any of that made sense...
Maybe it wouldn't save a ton... but it would make the intake mani look more clean, lol.
Regardless, it should come like that from the factory! Looks way, way better.

Thanks. Impressive weight loss on that BMW. Close to 350lb?
I actually shaved numerous posts from the manifold. The ones you see remaining are the ones I must have for other parts to work. The intercooler support bracket and hard fuel lines attach to the three-post set, for example. It's just hard to see whats missing without something with which to compare. I'll capture some photons of the OEM and my modified one side by side next week when I do the install.

Yeah, some where around there. I should be around 3060 lbs by the end of the week (lightweight rotors, calipers and evap delete).
Ah, I'll take another look, I didn't really study your pic. I just remember it having a lot of crap on top... I wanted to do that to the STI I had; I obviously never got to it. :unamused:
It looks good though! Can't wait to see what it looks like back on the engine.

Anyone heard of ABS Dynamics? $600 for cf fenders... For a M3. But they have all sorts of cars available.
Anyone know how good their products are?
Or would someone with cf knowledge recommend seibon over them?

The hardware from just one side of the Tumble Generator Valve system weighs in at 311 grams. So for the both that comes to 622 grams (1.37 lb) if you just delete the TGV hardware.

Progress occurs in the intake manifold install/swap. Wasn't as bad as I thought to get the manifold off. Took about 90 minutes. But it took HOURS to get off the old gasket residue without scratching up the port mating surface on the heads.

While I wait for epoxy to set up, I looked at the unused cruise control throttle cable cam, the coolant passages and brass fitting on the throttle body. Started at 1063 grams.

Deleted the above, then a port and "polish" removing the lip and shaping the inlet to be more airfoil/less brick,

and ground down a bit of the throttle plate shaft and it's hardware.

Ended up at 930 grams. A savings of 133 grams (0.29 lb).

We inspire each other JD. :D Now, get that **** installed.
Back on topic: FINALLY got my modified intake installed. Took way longer than I thought.:unamused:
As you saw above I lightened the throttle body 133 grams

Hardware for the intake/TGV to head 288 grams

Reduced to 208. Saved 79 grams. Meh.

Fuel rails and injectors. 1227 grams.

Reduced to 1141 grams. Saved 86 grams by removing the last of the EVAP system from the fuel rails. Yes I tared out the box.

The intake manifold wiring harness. 1059 grams.

Deleted all TGV, EVAP wires, and PCV detection wires from the harness. I still run the PCV. Reduced to 815 grams. I found an additional 10 grams after the photo. Coppers heavy. I never suspected I'd remove 244 grams from the harness.
