Best way to trim alternator bracket die grinder ?

I seen someone do it here
RavensFan7 02-22-2014 09:12 AM
Best way to trim alternator bracket die grinder ?

I was thinking of just removing the whole thing and taking a hacksaw to what I don't need....it's just aluminum I think.

I can remove a lot of metal from the alternator/ac bracket and the power steering/tensioner bracket....I wish I could remove them completely since I have no a/c or p/s....but the alternator and tensioner kinda mount to those.

If you're talking about the alternator support bracket, I used a dremel on mine no problem. Any pits that were formed were filled with JB weld and sanded down smooth.

down to 595, .79lb loss.
I just realized I can't take as much off my alternator bracket as I wanted, because I'm pretty sure it is a hoist spot for when I gotta pull the engine.

Also, while looking for that quote I came across some stuff about removing the one fan since I don't have a/c....I just have to look at which one doesn't spin when the engine is running I think.

That "a/c fan" is ONLY for the a/c right? It doesn't function any other time??
Vlad 02-22-2014 09:19 PM

No. The two fans work off a table in the ECU. The table looks at A/C, but not only.
Both fans have two speeds.
To complicate matters, the definition in Romraider is wrong.
I had posted the right definition, I forget where. the way to figure it out is to put the Subaru FSM next to the Romraider definition.
I think one of the cases was wrong.

In theory, you could delete a fan then go into the table and adjust it for the other fan and its two speeds.

I don't think I can do the romraider stuff with my ej22 ecu....maybe though, I'd have to look into it more....but I thought you couldn't do much with ecu's like mine.

I also don't have the FSM.

What do you mean by definition?
What do you mean by definition?
In Romraider, the tables are defined. IF the temperature goes over ..., THEN fan turns on.

The combinations of fans that they show in the "effect" are mismatched with the "cause".
The mismatch causes the user to believe that by updating XX table, he will trip a YY effect. Meanwhile, he is tripping a ZZ effect.

The descriptions only say "cover" which isn't very specific...and that is pretty damn funny all the google pictures are your car.

Cool piece though...I'll have to think about that one. I find myself using that mirror a lot....although like I mentioned before, I'm running out of stuff to remove and still be able to daily drive it.

I found the post in that thread: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/2391474-post292.html

He says 45lb weight savings but I bet it's closer to 35-40 lbs. In a GD it could be more.
Whats odd is the difference in the two weights. One guy saying 7lbs of material and the other says 40+.

IMO 7lbs wouldn't be worth the trouble, ESPECIALLY if you ever need to sell the car. 40lbs grabs my attention though. I'm curious about how this effects the rigidity of the rear though. Anyone know how much this would effect rigidity or does this spot not have much affect on it? Also, need to remember that you will lose the ability to put heavy items in the trunk unless you brace the new material, which would eat into a lot of the weight savings.
Steve.804 03-07-2014 11:53 AM

40lbs? No way. Unless you are also adding up the weight of the spare and jack? I'd only consider this if you are building a 100% racecar and trying to shed some of the weight that came with a rollcage installation. That way you aren't questioning rigidity either.

I'd just remove the spare and jack, get most of the weight savings benefit and invest in an Oswald rear bumper beam or the similar.
gtasti 03-07-2014 12:33 PM

I've seen someone make 2 aluminium braces from frame rail to rail after they cut out the tub.. The braces were for a fuel cell
conner02wrx 03-07-2014 12:43 PM

Take off your brakes and rotors. That will save you some serious weight. In all seriousness I ran a smaller gas tank and it saved alot of weight when full
gtasti 03-07-2014 12:44 PM

Which year is ur car ? And which gas tank
Serkan 03-07-2014 12:49 PM

I am sure there is more than 7lbs savings by replace the trunk floor with aluminum panel.

But I don't see the point removing weight from the back of the car.

You want even weight distribution as possible as you can get. I think it is 58% F and 42% R for a GD impreza sedan.

You want to transfer more weight on the rear suspension. So you move your battery, washer fluid in the trunk.

Best place to shave weight is in the front of the car.

bue car 03-07-2014 05:50 PM

^ That's how ill do my time attack gc in the rear, also, the diffuser will be HUGH and incorporate the trunk floor ;)
stretchedk7 03-07-2014 06:39 PM

Nice ^. was surprised at how little the tub weighed where the spare tire goes. the metal is so thin there though that cutting from the frame inwards (removing the tub area) it was maybe 5-12 pounds of metal. obviously removing the spare tire and all that as a total could be 40-55 all day.

i saved a ton of weight going to a fuel cell though. stock gas tank has alot of bs that goes with it.

Yeah, no power steering.

Related note....
An ej205 weighs more than my ej22e.... turbo stuff, more wires/sensors/solenoids, ect...

How much weight can I expect the turbo engine to add to my car?

...like 60-70 lbs?

I had to replace my wheel bearing on my impreza l no abs and one on my wife's wrx w/abs I found the knuckle is smaller and lighter for the no abs cars. So that might be a good place to save unsprung weight.

also, how much weight does that actually save? can't be much surely?
erok81 08-05-2014 12:13 PM

I'm mostly getting rid of it so I have a flat floor in my wagon. I with no rear seats or flooring that spare tire well makes thing a hassle.

Splinter 08-06-2014 11:53 PM

Looks like I'm back in the weightloss game

I'm dropping a turbo eg33 in my Impreza and I want to ditch the extra 100lbs I'll be gaining.

I just finished chopping out my whole rad support and I'll be building an aluminum boxframe support.

I'm working as a helicopter mechanic now so I've got access to pretty good aluminum fabrication equipment :D

Not really sure where else I can find weight up front to lose, the car is already pretty lean

I might finally pull the trigger on some DBA 5000 rotors, I'm deleting power steering and going to have another attempt at a smaller alternator, which means converting most of the lighting in the car to LEDs, which means I can run even smaller wiring. Deleting the vacuum booster too, going to a pedal box on the drivers floor. All in all I figure I've got about 30lbs to remove in this stuff, I'm working my way from the front of the car back looking for things, seeing as the extra 100lbs is all right at the damned nose of the car.

I snagged a whole box of junk aircraft wiring from work today so that'll give me a bit to do.

No it'll be a while before I get it on scales again

Last weigh in on proper race scales was 2790 with me in the car

I figure 600whp in a 2800lb car should be good for a giggle or two
