Coilovers will be the money maker in weight distribution. You can adjust ride height to shift weight, I highly recommend it if you're serious.
On the M3 I went from a 50/50 stock distribution sitting at 3420 lbs to 2980 and a 49/51 split. Before I added Coilovers I was around a 56/44 split. Those Coilovers did good!
MOST 'good' coilovers---the ones with stainless bodies... are only a couple pounds each...think less than 5...lighter than a strut/spring
the BEST way to save weight on the front of the car is...
battery
'U' brace
lw wheels/tires
'gbod'
lw crank pulley
lw bumper beam
the above will take an EASY #125 off the front of the car...forget struts
and all the other misc things that add up to an easy #20
and i see a lot of people doing a lot of real stupid things to these cars in this thread....quite shocking, really

Use google for gbod pics, they're basically a piece of metal that covers the fuel injectors. They are a MASSIVE pain in the dick to remove.
The U brace is a large piece of metal, shaped like a U, under the front of the car. It has your front tie down points on it and is basically only there for that and additional crash safety.

Here is some info which may help some..
Some research I did suggests that the R180 in an '07 Sti is heavier than the R180 in an '06 Sti, possibly adding as much as 20 lb.
This is because the '07 has a torsen limited slip locker, while the '06 has a mechanical, clutch-style locker.
Since the weight difference is rotating mass, it's effects may be equivalent to more than 20lb of weight savings.
A theory I have, which is not verified yet, is that the '06 and '07 6 speed transmissions are heavier than the '04-'05 by quite an amount.
I don't really know what it is, I am thinking it may be 40 lb.
This has to do with the center differential. The '06-'07 have an additional torsen locker, again rotating mass.
FIY, for the JDM cars, the years and nature of diff changes were the same as US. However, for the Spec C, they never went to rear Torsen, although they did so for Sti. I never looked into the center torsen for spec C, but I can look into it.
If you're looking for reliable, low mileage swaps, the JDM swap places usually have low mileage items. However the JDM 6 speed have shorter 5th and 6th.
They always have the same final ratios as the same year USDM Sti.

this #20 is really irrelevant as it is so low in the chassis...rotating or not...it isnt as big a deal as other rotating mass
im gonna get a cf driveshaft and not care a bit about the rear diff

Not to mention its so small in terms of size that it doesn't have the same effect a lw flywheel or lighter wheels will have. The only reason to swap diffs would be dependent on which style LSD you prefer.

I find it hard to believe they could stuff 20 more lbs into the rear differential, just by changing from a clutch type lsd to a torsen. There just isn't enough room in there for 20 more lbs of crap. The differential housings on these cars are so small.
I'm also having a hard time believing the the added torsen unit to the center differential weighs 40lbs. That may be a generous guess.

The 40 lbs for the center diff IS a guess (I think it may be 40), but anybody that wants to help me find a factual aswer, as to the extra weight of the '06-'07 torsen center, is welcome to do so.
We can make educated guesses, but maybe someone has the physical info.
As far as the R180, I can't say that I've found someone that weighed both, but I found two sets of weight info, from misc sources, when comparing the overall weight of an R180 with that of a WRX R160.
The construction of the torsen could (I am not giving this as a fact) have 3 pairs of worm gears in the R180 and to me it's plausible that those can be heavier than the clutch pack for the mechanical.
The R180 with clutch pack in the Spec C is a fact, via part number.
I just want to point out, as you guys start to search the threads, that the threads from 2006-08 have a level of confusion in them, as some were disputing at the time that torsen were installed in the R180, watch for that.
The reality, via part number check, is that they were and they started to be there for the year model '07.

So I got an answer about a Sti optional Mechanical center differential, it's weight is about 17 lb.
So I have to revise my estimate to 17-20 lb extra for the 2006-2007 6 speed with torsen center diff.
Also I found that the total weight of a torsen rear for a Mustang is 26lb. So therefore the extra weight of a torsen R180 could not be more than a few pounds.
So the total extra drivetrain weight of a 2007 vs a 2004-2005, I am estimating between the 6 speed and the R180, little over 20 lb, rotating mass.

Yes Sir,
But it can be rwd or fwd and twin engine. I should have taken pictures of the first test it was spinning the rims inside the tires for a few inches so i glued the tires to the rims.
It would be nice to set up one motor for acceleration and one for distance that would let it get going then the other motor would take over and keep it moving . I am way over thinking this

I have ordered a 4-point bolt in roll cage with harness bars on each side although I won't be installing it until I buy a new daily driver car some time soon.
I'm planning on removing AC, carpet, roof lining, back seats and seat belts before installing the cage, hopefully that will be enough to offset the extra weight. At least the weight distribution will be a little better too by adding the cage toward the rear of the car and removing the AC from the front.

well.....i finally installed the oswald lw front bumper beam.....and it is
taking whatever weight it ends up being---about 21 or so pounds i guess...off the front of the car so far foreward REALLY makes a difference in the way the car drives
i figure that i have taken somewhere around(im NOT l00py d00p and weigh everything to the bleeding gram like some here do  ) 125 pounds off the front of the car now, i guess...maybe a lil more
and that seems to be the key to the gd chassis......taking the weight off the front is magic for the way it drives....too bloody marvelous
now for the #3 li battery and a rear bumper beam and a few other goodies and it should be about done :ritz:

^^^Nice! I did the Oswald front beam too. What's your thought on leaving the OEM rear bumper beam alone simply for better weight balance? I realize overall weight reduction is ideal, but I've been thinking it might be good to keep that extra weight at the extreme rear to help the car rotate. Plus the rear beam install seems like a PITA.

The Uncle is right about people obsessing about every little gram saved.
Personally on my street car, I'd first focus on weight reductions like:
Lighter battery
Lighter rotors
Lighter driveshaft
Then as the parts become available, replacing steel parts with aluminum or carbon fiber...but I wouldn't sweat the small weight savings like lug nuts for instance.

Super duper. Not everyone in this thread is building a STREET CAR. I drive my car to meets, shows and races. That's it. It's not a daily driver. Just because it's not useful for your STREET CAR it doesn't mean that it's not useful. Quite frankly if all you're going to do is throw in a lighter battery, this thread isn't for you. This thread is for people who are serious about weight reduction, so if you're not, go **** post all over some other thread.

Agreed.
I think it's awesome to have people posting up the weight of every small thing. Yeah some go a bit crazy with things but good for them.
well.....i finally installed the oswald lw front bumper beam.....and it is
taking whatever weight it ends up being---about 21 or so pounds i guess...off the front of the car so far foreward REALLY makes a difference in the way the car drives
i figure that i have taken somewhere around(im NOT l00py d00p and weigh everything to the bleeding gram like some here do  ) 125 pounds off the front of the car now, i guess...maybe a lil more
and that seems to be the key to the gd chassis......taking the weight off the front is magic for the way it drives....too bloody marvelous
now for the #3 li battery and a rear bumper beam and a few other goodies and it should be about done :ritz:
i know this feel mate:
AC is gone - 9kg
bumper beam is gone - 12kg
subframe is gone - 10kg
battery is gone - 9kg
whole exhaust replaced with nice light stainless steel one - say 15kg.
valve covers are gone - 1kg
steel hood replaced with CF - 7kg
one rad fan gone - 1kg
all sound deadening off the firewall - 2kg
66kg/145lbs or so. even just driving out of the driveway with the new exhaust was an immediately, largely noticeable difference. let alone everything else.

Most cars have a second radiator fan just for the Air Conditioning.

anyway.....I have been watching this thread since day 1...and my comments stand
people are doing some REALLY stupid things to cars to lighten them...and people are WAY obsessing about it.....

Damn, 12 years and all you've done is a lighter battery? Are you on a racing team? Team 3 Toed Sloth?
You might not think grams matter, but my numbers speak for themselves. Now, if only I had the driving skills to match my car... :/

I remember reading all the IWSTI postings about the ACPT, because there were only few postings on NASIOC.
I would say of the Sti owners in that thread, probably 80% were happy and thought this was noticeable. Some were unhappy due to vibration, which ACPT fixed right away, by giving those owners replacement driveshafts.
Several guys documented improved gas mileage.
In my case, there were even fewer guys that paid for a CF DS for a WRX, because these owners focus on the 6 speed upgrade.
I thought that the CF would not only help with reducing mechanical losses, but also protect the 5 speed to a small extent.
I am putting through the 5 speed currently 340 ftlb to the ground, out of my EJ207, for 2 years currently..
Like I said, the 5 speed driveshaft is longer and heavier and therefore provides for a slightly more pronounced change.

i like that the cf absorbs most of the shock on hard launches as well as the other benefits
