Weight Reduction part 33

02 RS 08-27-2014 11:32 PM

Just thought I'd leave this here.. GB for lightweight bumper beams. (sorry mods, I know I'm crossposting, but this seems appropriate..)

Do you daily drive your car? Because if you do good luck when you get into an accident. I don't think it's worth the hassle.

Good luck!

Bumper beams aren't for safety, they're for insurance. Japanese market cars don't even come with them.

So I got my DBA rotors, and I also got a new blade for my sawzall. Weeeee.

wuuussa, eat an apple a day and you will never go to the doctor - save money :D
Vlad 09-04-2014 11:39 AM

I just weighed the R160 vs the R180, the R180 adds 10 lb.
Splinter 09-04-2014 03:13 PM

I believe the matching axles are also heavier
bue car 09-04-2014 10:47 PM

wet or dry?
Vlad 09-06-2014 05:58 PM

I had both full. I saw that I could bench fill the r180 without losing any oil by the axle seals. So I weighed both since the r160 had not been drained yet.
The Sti rear Brembo rotor is around 16 lb vs the WRX rotor is at 8 lb.
I wish these were lighter. Maybe in time I'll go with 2-piece replacements. Even better, if there was a parking brake caliper conversion, I saw that for a VW.

There's a lot of weight to be lost there if you pull all the sensors as well.
gtasti 09-08-2014 10:11 PM

I pulled everything from the main CPU under the ash tray

Left the behind the dash stuff as that a much harder task

There were a bunch of horizontal stabilizer ribs from a Bell 212 in the scrap bin at work, I snagged them and mocked something up. Keep in mind, this isn't a daily driven car.

Maybe it's a little much, lol.

But if I reskinned it it'd be a hell of a lot lighter than my V6 wing I have now, and it's designed to generate massive amounts of downforce...

The wash bucket wouldn't be in the final version.

That link might be old news to some of you , but I likes the no nonsense carbon fiber parts.
I did a rough estimation and if someone had all the stock pieces and swapped them out it would be over 200LBS of weight savings.
I searched some stock weights and got 60Lbs for the stock front doors and 48 for the rear but if you got different #'s it won't be off by too much .
Just found it so I thought I'd share it.

vicious_fishes 09-16-2014 06:00 PM

some of the stuff in this thread is madness. power steering delete?! "lightweight" WIRES? swiss cheese-ing half the car?

there's TONS of weight you can remove and not effect the drive/reli ability one bit. remove the bumper beams, lightweight pulleys, wheels/tyres, 2 piece rotors, flywheel, driveshaft, alloy hood, sound deadening, strip the trunk, front subframe U brace thing, A/C if you live in the kind of climate i do, injector covers, rear seat underbrace thing, battery, aftermarket exhaust... all that can be either ****canned or replaced with no adverse effects. and it totals like 300lbs+. and is almost all off the front of the car.

some of this other stuff is just mental though.

in related news, i'm getting an 818.:devil:
Splinter 09-16-2014 08:01 PM

I like how pretty much all the things you bring up are from my build.

If you don't like it, don't do it. This thread is about how to do it, not how to be a little bitch ;) Real men take power tools to their cars.

I do not give a **** about drive-ability or reliability. I want a fast, unique car.

This bull**** comes up in every thread about weight reduction about once a month. 'lol just take a dump before you race, same weight loss!'

Yea, but if you take a dump AND change all your bolts to ones that have just a single thread of protrusion past the nut, that's twice the savings!

But at the end of the day, we each have our own cars. I have mine, you have yours. You build yours how you want it, I'll build mine how I want it. And I'll laugh at you when I pass you on the outside, and you'll laugh at me when I'm broken down on my way home from the track.

Different strokes!

Weight Reduction
^^exactly

Hoods, driveshafts, exhausts, and a good lightweight battery are all $$$$$....but they are the best ways to remove a bunch of weight.

Lots of cheap/free things to be removed or lightened though.

I have an old base model so there's not much to begin with, but I still want it lighter....that's where the stuff in this thread really helps out.

Not making any other carbon components for vehicles at the momentbeen working on hard parts for engine stuff.

The Underdogs was us and our racing efforts. Maybe someday well be back at it, for now we are just busy with day to day work (which is also a good thing).

Thanks for contacting LIC Motorsports.

Our only carbon components are extremely lightweight, its the whole reason we made them (to be the lightest on the market) but now the only items offered are our rear flares, all other items have been discontinued and no further production of more products on the older platforms will be in the works unfortunately.

Seibon carbon still offers front fenders for your model year, which is a nice refined alternative.

So I was looking at some new rims and decided to look up some stuff, thought this was interesting http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=515709 So the. I researched some of our Subaru wheels and found this http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2239019

What I noticed on the thread is how heavy the new Wrx and Sti wheels at around 24 LBs per wheel!!!! , you could gain some performance by wheel swapping to some older BBS Sti wheels that are around 17 Lbs .
The Satch 11-08-2014 11:00 AM

I have a question for you weight reduction guys, there might be a better place to ask it, but I'm not sure where.

I picked up a set of carbon fiber doors for my 06 wrx from another member here, but they didn't come with mounting hardware. My idea was to fabricate a pair of steel plates per door and weld nuts onto them to mount the doors on the hinges. Does anybody have any experience with this or know a better way?
bue car 11-08-2014 12:39 PM

Easy solution is to just give me the doors :)

Your idea sounds good. Nice sandwhich wedge with surface area

Been reading this thread quite lot recently and I've gone quite far with my car.
The car is genuine V7 Prodrive edition STI. Currently running 570bhp/520lbsft

Don't have any weight measurements yet as I'm going for a roll cage so it will be weighed once complete.
Hoping to achieve 1350kg including rollcage

So focused and lightweight whilst retaining the oem heater and elec front windows.

So far I've gone for the following weight savings, however I'm yet to strip the doors. I'll be fixing the rear windows up and removing the impact bars on all doors.

Fully stripped interior inc all sound deadening and seam sealer, all trim, seat belts etc
No radio or speakers

All airbags gone
All excess lugs and brackets removed
Tow eyes removed
Front U brace removed
Evap system removed
Spare wheel/tools removed
PC680 battery
My car runs no rear bumper beam as standard
AP racing brakes 356mm 6 piston front/335mm 4 piston rear
KW variant 3 coilovers
18x8 Volk CE28N
Lightweight Simpson Race Exhaust
Prodrive/Sparco carbon seats
Momo 07 steering wheel

LIQUIDSK8S 02-05-2015 08:12 AM

Took my car in to get corner balanced, and finally got to see how much it weighs. It's a 02 WRX with a full 05 JDM STi driveline.

2903lbs with 1/4 tank of fuel and no rear wing/subwoofer. Also no water in the intercooler spray tank.

Here is the starting setup.
Total weight: 2903 52.58% cross weight
LF: 856 RF: 938
LR: 589 RR: 520

Weight distribution Front: 61.8% Rear: 38.2%

These are the final results after adding weight to the back for the sub/wing/water, along with a 205lb guy in the drivers seat. Bit heavier than myself (185lbs) but not a big deal.

Total weight 3152lbs
LF: 950 RF: 926 49.6% cross weight
LR: 640 RR: 636

Weight distribution Front 59.5% Rear 40.4%

So it should be around 3130lbs with myself in the car and 1/4 tank.

LIQUIDSK8S 02-07-2015 03:51 PM

I just realized one reason why my weight estimates were off by 50lbs. 16 of those pounds were from the tires. My current tires are Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 235/40/18 which weigh 26lbs. My estimates were based on switching to the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups 235/40/18 which only weigh 22lbs each. That's a nice 16lbs of rotational mass I will be removing soon!
