Good point about protecting the wheel bearings from heat. That would push 2 piece rotors to the top of the list for weight reduction. They are a reduction in unsprung, rotating mass AND save your bearings (and life?)...all while improving the cars braking.
And they look sweet.

how much did the front dba 5000's run you?
| Diversion | 04-05-2005 07:56 AM |
Bemani is talking about the brake dust shields that cover the backside of the rotors - I think that's what he means, the shims weigh nothing - so that's pointless. I already removed my brake dust covers.. they aren't that heavy, but I figured both fronts and bolts weighed like 1.5 lbs.

Dust covers are a differrent story altogether:D They do help w/ air getting to the bake of the rotor, I take mine off every spring (put them back on in the fall).
The 5000 run $450-500. I can't remember what the outer discs are, but pretty reasonable.

Hey, you're talking about the guy that even pulled the fog lamp fuse and has no spare fuses in the car
Anything unimportant in the interior that is held on with 4 screws, I made it down to 3 ...
So yes, I'm talking about the shims  But that sounds like a bad idea so I'll give that up.
My dust shields are LONG GONE.
My next step ... get a sheet of carbon fiber and see what the hell I can replace with it.
DBA has 2-piece rotors, for those of you ready to do a brake job. Get you some cryo-treated rotors & pads. I did, but I have the "Cobb Stage 2" kit, which aren't 2-piece :( The 2-piece rotors are "ultra-light" according to the site. I would be interested for someone to compare the weight of an un-used stock rotor with the rotor and hat from DBA. Shawn? Do you have the weight of yours?

I weighted the DBA 2 piece rotors (slotted), it was heavier than the DBA 1 piece (cross drilled & slotted). Of course, the 1 piece was used, 2 piece was new too ...
5010 (new) - 14 lb 11.2 oz
650x (used) - 13 lb 12 oz

Also in the trunk...has anybody removed the bracket for the jack? What did you use to drill out the spot welds?

Any one know how much the stock WRX spolier weighs?
Also someone suggested taking out swaybars if you onlydrag race.
If I am on stock suspension, can I do this for my day at the drag strip or will the car be un drivable?

6 lbs IIRC. If your driving in a straight linw and a flat surface, the sway bars could come out (might as well take the subframe out as well- 22 lbs)- sway bars are ~ 8 lbs each.
I have no experience drag racing, but have seen cars go awry (other lane) on TV- no sway bars might be problem if that were to happen (having to turn the car)- I don't think it's very common, but something to think about.

I tapped away some more of the sound deadening under the seats. I suggest the chisel and mallet method. Again, I have to recommend Turtle Wax Bug 'n' Tar Remover in the spray bottle. If you tap the one inch wide chisel with a hammer/mallet/handle of a big-ass screwdriver...and then clean up with the tar remover, you get the least mess or damage.

Lets see what else are we forgetting:
- Remove that useless windshield; damn thing is heavy and real men dont need one anyway!
- Take out all the seats; you dont need them. Just use a pillow or yoga mat those are pretty comfy, but than again comfort is hugely over-rated.
- I would also remove the entire drivetrain. With the weight reduction you are looking at you won't really need one.
- Dump that girlfriend of yours. All women ever do is bitch and add more weight.
- Get a limposuction even if you dont need one; every ounce counts.
- Doors will have to go too.
- So is the sound system.
- And seatbelts too. They are for suckers.
- Real men dont need airbags either they use old people and children instead.
I hope I didnt miss anything...

That sounds like a lot of work. I guess you could scrape or sandblast it and then paint it. I don't know how much weight that would save you. Rust would be a big risk.
It is still a good idea, though. The proof is that WRC cars are like that. I think that they get a good coat of paint on every square inch of the car.
Too bad Subaru doesn't make aluminum cars.
....someone posted, somewhere, that it was almost 40 pounds difference....just the lid....no wing....but that is just what I remember...dunno if it is true
I WILL have one.
wow, that is a lot. But they are charging $550 WITHOUT shipping for an UNPAINTED trunk lid  I would rather pick up a cheaper, lighter (most likely) carbon fiber trunk lid and then paint it.
BTW while im on the subject. Does anyone know some place that sells trunk springs for carbon fiber lids.....or will I have to find spec-c trunk springs (are they even different???).
edit: I see scotty. So I can sleep sound at night if I remove them?
so does removing these bumper beams decrease the structural integrity of our cars in high speed accidents, or are they mainly for low speed impacts?
Japan has a 2.5 mph low speed standard, the US 5mph IIRC. The US model will withstand damage better at low speeds.
