Bring back the Golden Days of Cobra and GT40 wins at Lemans.....
Heres a cool story bout Dan Gurney
A Mk II GT40 was converted to an open roadster. It was given to Bruce McLaren for further development. The 427 powered car was entered in the `66 Sebring race and Ken Miles drove it to first place. An interesting story is told about Dan Gurney in that race. Gurney had qualified for pole position in a Mk II. At the start of the race, Gurney was the first one to sprint to his car, only to find his GT40 wouldn't start. The rest of the 64 cars had gotten away and were out of sight before he got the big block started. By lap 10, Gurney had passed 54 cars to take 10th place. By the first hour he had set a new lap record and moved past Ken Miles to lead the race. Gurney & co-driver Grant held 1st place until the very last lap. Only 1/4 mile from the finish the GT40 quit! Gurney got out and pushed the car across the line only to be disqualified. If he had stayed in the car, he would've gotten 2nd.
My Hats off to Gurney...... Lotta heart
Heres a little history..
Ford had taken the '67 LeMans, winning two years in a row. The other GT40's didn't finish. Only one was due to mechanical problems, the others were all out due to accidents. Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt drove Shelby's winning GT40 at an average speed of 135.48 MPH for the 24 hours covering 3,249.6 miles, breaking the old record by the greatest margin ever! That record wasn't broken until 1971. After the race, the 427 was dynoed at 499 HP, four more than it had at the beginning of the race.
So My choice is Dan Gurney..... I also heard he partied pretty good too...
Check out his Biography.....http://www.allamericanracers.com/bio.html

I don't think anyone mentioned Niki Lauda.
- Niki Lauda
- Ari Vatanen
- Jackie Ickxx
My favorite motorsports is Rally, then F1 so many of them are my favorite.
I also respect the accomplishments of Phil Hill, Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti.

Jackie Stewart- great commentary, too.
Derek Bell- it was always him and Hurley Haywood dominating 24 hours here at Daytona for years.
Aryton- no commentary necessary.

I would'nt say I have a racing hero, cause I don't have heros. But there are a few drivers that I really admire.
In no particular order. Few NASCAR drivers here, even though I'm not a big fan of the sport anymore, I did grow up on it.
Harry Gant: Mr. September, seemed like a gentleman on and off the track. I got the impression that motorsport for him was just something he really enjoyed doing, winning was just a bonus and he retired with class.
Alan Kulwick: Was underestimated, won a championship at the top of his sport without the best equipment. Probably the most exciting finish to a season in Winston Cup history. Nextal's contrived BS can't produce excitment like Alan and Elliot provided in '92. How can't you love the Underbird?
Dave Marcis: Worked hard, rarely had the best equipment. Rarely even had a sponser, but he'd consistently qualify and finish. You'll never see a driver like that in modern NASCAR, they don't want that kind of grit.
Mark Martin: Always carries himself well in an interview. Always gives a smile, and I was able to get his autograph cause he stayed two hours longer then he had to at a signing.
Peter Solberg: Flat out love of what he does and a never say quit attitude.
Tim O'neil: I admire what he's been able to acomplish and respect the knowledge he has to offer.
Carlos Sainz: Cool and calculating. His style is what I'd like to have behind the wheel.
Dan Gurney: Did not let a late start get in his way. Drove a wide variety of cars fast and hard. Smart enough to keep going in the buisness of motorsports. Being part of the AAR Barracuda team does'nt hurt.
Don Garlits: Innovator and great competitor. Helped make his sport safer.
Gerhard Berger: No clue to be honest, but his name sticks in my head. Maybe I saw him driving the red cars on TV one day when I was a kid. I am partial to the color red.
These are some of the drivers that have had the most influence on me, thats why I included them. I suppose it is a bit odd that even though I can't stand modern NASCAR, that I've been influenced by so many of the past drivers.

Great Thread !
I read it with great interest and unless I missed it I'm shocked that one name has not been high on the rally boys list.
Hannu Mikola - The best I ever saw and bridged the 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive era's with astounding ease. Pure class. :D

First race I ever saw was in Mason City Iowa. Half mile dirt track and they managed to get the good ol boys of nascar to perform for us. Team petty finished first and Cale Yarborogh came in 3rd on 3 tires, he was leading by a half lap until the right front sheared off. I was 7. Years later I ended up running the same track in a hobby stock T-bird. Met Don Garlits up at Brainerd once and Dick Landy,Don Nicholson and Shirley Muldowny at SIR Seattle. Garlits was polite but condisending,cha-cha was a b--ch,Dyno Don wacko dude but Dick Landy was down to earth and a straight shooter-he gets my vote. ;)

Kenny Roberts: (thread starter didn't say it had to be 4 wheels) Amazing on 2 wheels. Favorite memory when he did a little flat track with a 2 stroke.
Roger DeCoster: Hot dog motocrosser when I was a kid.
Jackie Steward: Just like his personality, gentlemen racer.
Rich Vogler: Quiet person, many throught he was an A-hole, but very good to his friends and did many good things off the track he didn't want people to know, very hard driver.
Ken Schrader: When he passes away, he will have a long list that people will say "wow I didn't know he did all that" I just like his personality and all the different types of racing he does.
Vince Kart Cochran: Won first kart race, Won 75% of his races in his first season-only finish out of the top 3 was a single DNF(road racing-sprinter). Switch to dirt oval racing, won local dirt championship. Many special race memories and trophies. Yes this is me, :p Seriously-karting was Pruitt
Rick Mears: Yes his wins in Indy, but thought he was a nice guy and had a cool attitude toward racing.
David Hobbs: Smart, funny, good racer.
Senna: You all already said it.
Steve Kinser: Wrench head racer.

Hmmm this is great!
Wayne Gardner - great bike racer, cars too!
Keke Rosberg - exciting to watch, if Honda was more reliable back then he would have won more
Gilles Villeneuve - if only he'd have been around longer :( guts and honour
Jacques Villeneuve - anyone how "Micheal" tries to cheat against and get the upper hand is a hero in my book
Colin Macrae - could drive anything fast, probably still can
Greg Moore - class, smooth driver :(
Richard Burns - would love to see him return
Petter Solberg - natural instinct, love to watch him drive
Alain Menu - great touring car action!
Anyone who enters the Isle of Man TT :)

Carlos Sainz
Bravest of the brave in a sport for brave men only
His nagging perfectionism for car setup helped establish several mfrs as world champs--Subaru, Ford, Toyota, Citroen
His style of choosing when and where to quit, and then having the decency not to kill himself before bowing out.
Watching his in-car footage, him sawing at the wheel...more than once I've patterned on that while driving too fast down some squiggly little road and thinking "ohmygodhowamIgonnagetaroundthiscorner?" and then doing one of those classic Carlos wheel twiddlling things, and somehow making it thru
His polite and articulate manner of talking to clueless TV interviewers, even when they are asking him painful questions like, "Why did you crash up there, are you disappointed?"
Sainz is SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING on camera than that colorless Loeb.
Sainz is The Man. Ze WRC weell not be ze same wizout heem.
Cheers,

The guy on TV I wish I could be though is Alain de Cadenet. Those Victory by Design shows are cool. It is cool he says, "I shallt have to drive this now" he puts on some old school driving goggles and rips up the country side in million dollar cars.

I'll throw in a vote for "The Stig," both past and present, from TV's Top Gear. The first one was Perry McCarthy, but we don't know who the current one is...
While not necessarily heroes, they're both pretty talented and drive a huge range of cars.

My list of top Racing Gods/Heroes are those Car/Bike racers that exhibit extraordinary speed. It is raw speed, above all else, that separates the greats from those that are merely good. In all I have six drivers from Formula One, four from WRC and two from MotoGP. In most cases, the creme de la creme eventually find their way into these three racing series which together comprise the top of the racing world. Of course there are a few exceptions such as Carl Fogerty who remained in World Superbike his entire career even though he could have beaten Doohan given an equal machine.
1. Ayrton Senna - F1 - The most talented and fastest racer of all time in any racing discipline. Period.
2. Michael Schumacher - F1 - Almost as fast as Senna but with more racecraft and less personality
3. Valentino Rossi - MotoGP - Senna's two-wheel counterpart. Redefined "Talent" in the MotoGP world.
4. Sebastian Loeb - WRC - As fast as ex-teammate Colin McRae on gravel. And he's even better on Tarmac!!
5. Jim Clark - F1 - The fastest ever until Senna came along.
6. Colin McRae - WRC - Exceptional car control but unlucky. Deserves way more than his one title.
7-13. Petter Solberg - WRC - Almost as fast as Loeb. Made Subaru teammate Tommi Makinen look slow!
7-13. Giancarlo Fisichella - F1 - Outqualified every teammate including Fast guys Ralf and Jenson. Unlucky Career.
7-13. Kevin Schwantz - MotoGP - Beat Doohan and Rainey in '93, driving a totally outclassed Suzuki
7-13. Jackie Stewart - F1 - The best driver of his generation and a real gentleman.
7-13. Rubens Barichello - F1 - A little slower than Schumey but still one of the fastest ever.
7-13. Marcus Gronholm - WRC - Made Burns look like an amateur at Peugeot.
7-13. Carl Fogerty - WSB - How did he not end up in MotoGP?

Gilles. When I was a teen, us western Canadians mistrusted all French Canadians, and for me to have him as my 'god' was a test of courage. Just mentioning his name would subject me to two hours minimum of verbal volleys, and defending him was my occupation.
I remember reading an article in some motor mag on him; a "day in the life" piece. He was living in Monaco with his wife and a two year old Jacques. In the article, he drove to work in Italy through the mountains in his Ferrari provided 308 with the baby and mother in the back "seats" with the journalist in the passenger seat. He drove flat out through the mountain passes, using the handbrake for the tight hairpins. Jacques slept through the whole thing. After kissing a rock dented the 308's quarter, he pulled a screwdriver out of the toolkit and punched it though the dent and levered it out.
Hardcore and tough. I'm still amazed someone like him made it into F1, and I wonder if it will happen again.

Didn't Kevin in his early years take it too them in a 600cc class riding a RZ350? When I had a RZ I think the company I got my pipes from advertised Kevin road for them and did above. Since you listed him you should know, would have been around 1984 give or take a year or two.

Henri Toivonen simply the best, on the limit and amazing (Rally)
Schumacher I still look at 1994-1998 where he did not have superior cars as the era to judge him,he was simply amazing, people like to nit pick because he is so successful but I think the numbers speak for themselves (circuit)
The best all around driver I have to pick John Surtees, only world champ on both 2 and 4 wheels ever!
Bikes it has to be Joey Dunlop simply amazing a shame that he died
