WRX show car part 1

Chris Morgan 02-08-2004 01:55 PM

WRX show car...
NO flames please ;) ok...my car has had extensive body work due to an accident I was involved in a few months ago. The paint imperfections are getting to me a lot..since my car is PSM you can see everything! I am thinking about this for a summer project... Car has JUN front and zerosport grill and eyelines already, and a body kit thats gonna change ;) Here are my idea's....

2003-4 Lamborghini paint job..not tellin which color
Smooth door handles, trunk keyhole, fill in line on the doors, shave side markers, shave antenna. Custom rock blocker material.

Now for the kicker. Cuz my car is so low right now and I have a JUN bumper..I have scraped many many times...I have been pondering Air strut suspension. I know, its a WRX....I love haulin ass in turns and the like, but the car looks so freakin mean...especially with a catless blitz nur spec exhaust:devil:

For the inside I wanna do a custom leather interior to match the outside color. Like little accents on the seats and stuff of that sort. I dont know what kinda rims I wanna get either. I looooooooooooooooooooooooove my Rota Attacks! Well, theres my baseline..if anyone has any imput please let me know. I think i am gonna "drift" away from the race car look..car is plenty fast for me, and F all the "NOOOO its a wrx, what are you doing?!?!" people, and finally do what I wanna get done to MY car!

For all that you listed I hope you have over 10,000 to spend....

Chris Morgan 02-08-2004 04:28 PM

Milla,

Never ever expected to see your name pop up on this thread! Just messin, your cars hot! Anyways, 10,000.00??? I have my ways. A reeally good friend of mine can do wonders with the air-strut suspensions. I have a bodyshop that can hook me up. The leather interior is like around 600.00. I can make that in a week or less in just tips doing valet! The paint job will be the most extensive part of the project. But hey, whats better than taking apart a car ehh? Putting it back together of coarse :furious: But seriously, if everything goes together nicely, its gonna be one heck of a car!

piker28 02-08-2004 04:31 PM

the real deal lamborghini paint is what will cost you 10 g's no matter who you know unless you kinda mix it yourself but then you cant say you have the real lamborghin paint

personally id think it will be ugly and heavy *shrug*
Chris Morgan 02-08-2004 04:35 PM

Damn, if the Lambo paint is that expensive, ill just do a pearl metallic yellow! Sheesh, i am not throwin down 10g's for paint.

Does anyone have any other ideas on what color to paint my WRX???? Not silver or gunmetal or anything like that. Maybe a titanium would be sweet! ehh??

-Chris
piker28 02-08-2004 04:37 PM

yea thad be cool

youve heard the saying "you dont just buy the car you buy the name" I mean why else would like bmw service visits cost some much and so on and so forth

i would never do the air strut suspension but its your car just do what makes you happy, coilovers would do the same though and the jun bumper is really low thats part of your problem
Chris Morgan 02-08-2004 04:44 PM

Seriously! The JUN bumper is 2 inches off the ground and I only have a 1.5 inch drop!!! The air suspension would be used solely to save the bumpuh! ANd cuz it looks badarse when the car is slammed for shows and what not:cool:

This just in! hehe...I was just quoted 400.00 to have my c-west rear lip molded to the rear bumper. Worth it? It now has really big gaps and what not..i need to eliminate this pronto!

-Chris
piker28 02-08-2004 04:48 PM

get coilovers
Chris Morgan 02-08-2004 04:53 PM

Heres the deal. I wanna be able to adjust the height of the car from inside. With coilovers you cannot do this. If I wanna raise and lower the car w/ CO's I am gonna have to get out of the car every time I wanna raise/lower...it would be a pain in the buttox! Like if I come up to a steep sidewalk or somethig ill just flick a switch, be high enough to clear and be on my way! Thats just my take on it. More of a safety procaution item that anything else.

Titanium metallic with a DuPont Chameleon blue over it. It'll be mostly titanium, but the blue will show up at certain angles and in certain lighting conditions.
djerickd 02-08-2004 05:05 PM

Look into the PRAXXIS Air Supsension.

For a decent paint job doing all the door trims and engine you will be talking about 4g's with just basic paint... Air ride isnt that cheap either retail it will got for about 2g's. As far as shaving things go I think the general rule is about 1g a foot that needs to be shaved... ( to do it the right way). Now if you have your connections more power to you. But if they are not going to do it right its not worth going to them if you are building a show car. I have alot of friends that do body work but I wouldnt go to them because I want my car to look perfect. As far as rims go you will be spending about 2500 retail price for a set of half decent rims. (Do not go with rotas for a show car)

Milla
MikalsWRX 02-08-2004 08:02 PM

yeah the paint is going to kill you. As soon as you say Lambo paint its like $100 an once. Just do it Yugo yellow :-) Laters Mikal

Well my ass is shaved...uh the WRX's ;) Here's a pic or 2 for ya just so you can see it and I think some of that sounds like overkill but will def be different which is nice to see!

Milla,

I was trying to be nice, now your just being an idiot. Leave it alone. I guess you don't know when to stop asking dumb questions. Questions like....Does my car look good? Guys does it? Then you whine about it if someone says the slightest thing about it. Im sorry man, but if you get irked by others negative opinions about your car, dont post pics of it on this site! Personally, it looks ok for a 2.5rs! But thats not what this is about. Just stop posting on my thread. Cuz I said so, and I am tired...and holy **** good night everyone! :furious:

Milla..Dude chill out man! I was trying to be nice, and you start asking like 21 questions about my trunk. I wanted opinions on the car itself, not the trunk and if the line would break. If I wanted to discuss that I would of posted about it. I dont have any problems with what people have to say about my vehicle. For Christ sake, my previous car was a 2002 VW 1.8T lime green Beetle..and I loved that freaking car and I had it for 3 years. So dont go off trying to tell me i am insecure about the way my car looks or will look in the future.

Dont do the air ride on a WRX.... Trust me, im an ex-minitrucker and nobody knows about air suspension like a minitrucker.

I know there are 101 ways to convince yourself that its ok, but its not meant for a wrx.

Trust me... I was a socal 909 air-susp pioneer .... my list of parts ive had exp w/

- Old school Gabriel hi-jackers air shocks ported
- motorhome airbag coil inserts
- 4 diff kinds of firestone airbags
- multiple onboard compressors
- solinoids
- Co2
- every thickness of airlines
- remote control key fob
- countless dead batteries
- countless air leaks
- fully skid plated under carriage (so i could drag frame and have a 10 foot spark rooster tail)

No matter what you do you will go through tires like nobodys business. Dont convince yourself that you can get it aligned at XX psi and not go through tires.

Anybody who has rolled on an air ride for more then a year will tell you that they have found themselves on the side of the road replacing a blown airbag. After doing it 2 or 3 times you will start carying with you every where you go:
1 spare airbag
1 change of clothes
1 complete tool kit
1 low profile jack
several air fittings
teflon tape
1 spare air hose

After going through all this would I do an air ride again? Absolutely!

Some people get their jollies from dumping boost through a RFL BOV, or venting NOS,, but there is NOTHING like the reaction you get when you rertrofited airbags meant for a suburban onto a minitruck, pull into a parking lot with 13 inchs of wheel gap, turn your dump valve and the whole truck drops and lays frame with a LOUD WOOSH as 4 airbags at 150psi dump.

So keep these things in mind:
- airbags are not for cars (hot rods the exception)
- air bags are not for daily drivers
- air bags will make the car handle worse

- air bags ARE for that sunday cruiser

Im outta the truck thing now, but ive been looking for a 65 lincoln cont' that will be tuckin 20's and a rinde on a 4 corner solenoid controled air.

Now that car should be on bags,,, not a WRX.
silverF4turbo 02-12-2004 11:42 AM

air struts like Praxis makes or air struts that let you dump your car to the ground like bagged Sport Trucks? If its not the first that would look ghey
quentinberg007 02-12-2004 11:46 AM

Silver probably hides imperfections in the paint. At least it isn't black.

Milla
Chris Morgan 02-12-2004 01:17 PM

Guys,

I agree that the air ride isnt for everyone. Perhaps only trailor queens should have em. I have a friend that has a 2002 Altima on air ride suspension. He has had it for a good 2 years, maybe shorter. He never ever had a problem. If you drive the car respectably (sp?) and dont do anything stupid, i think it should be fine. Air ride suspensions have been around since the 80's, they have been made more durable and such. I have done a lot of research on them. I am currently checking out the KMWPerformance package which is the 3/8inch FBSS competition fast bag kit. It comes with everything,I have talked to different vendors and they say its the correct balance for the car.

The main reason for this setup is so that my body kit wont scrape any more than it has. Also to slam it on the ground for shows. Ill drive it at stock height. How can I save the tires so hey dont wear so bad? Do I have to drive the car at the level its at now? I could just jack it up if I know ill scrape....slam it for show, drive at the level I have it at now. I have no problems with that. Are there downsides to this idea? Please post info!

PARANOID56 02-12-2004 01:52 PM

As for the trunk, you can just clime in thought the pass through, and pull the glow-in-the-dark handle, and it opens.
As for the air ride, there was a mag a few months ago, that has a system for the WRX, with three different settings on it from touring, to low, to track low. They said it was super nice (except for the price) but this kit was designed for our cars. I would get that one.
And Lamborghini paint is not that much, its just a color, find it on the color chart, and have it mixed up, then you have lambo paint, you dont have to buy it at the lambo dealer to have lambo paint
Now, get all this done, and show some pictures :D
Shane
AaronWRX 02-12-2004 03:46 PM

Do what you will but it would make more sense for you to get coil overs and drive your car at a sane height and, then for shows you just have to pull off the wheel and rachet down the coilovers for a seriously slammed look. .. after the show is over crank it back to your stock height.
collegedropout 02-12-2004 06:06 PM

I agree with AaronWRX on the bag idea (not for cars), except there is nothing wrong with bags on a daily driver. Otherthan that I think you should take the car to bare metal and get it all CHROMED. Then you can have a trailer queen show car, that was bred from rally racing.

BoostdScubaru 02-12-2004 08:35 PM

lamborghini paint??? you people dont know your paint... lamborghini does not make their paint ... just like chevrolet doesnt make their paint. dupont makes paint PPG makes paint... lamborghini does not make paint... there is always a supplier... find the supplier and the paint will be around $250 for a gallon
02R6 02-12-2004 09:09 PM

Pardon my ignorance but, how do you "fill in line on the doors?"

(Also, my key lock is shaved and I have never had a problem. Go for it.)
Chris Morgan 02-12-2004 10:40 PM

Just use body filler on the doors. I think it will give the car a wider look...cleaner. Due to the damage of the accident I was involved in, the passenger side is not up too par. This is 1 reason for me doing so. I agree on the lock on the truck. Also looks so so clean. It would be a problem at all. As told in another post on this thread, there is a glow-in-the-dark latch you can pull if your trunk won't open or whatever.

If you want to win shows, I'd recommend checking out some import shows where you live and see who is winning, if winning is your desire. In California it's the racers that win the 'Best Subie Category'. WRX's with the rollcages, heavy modded engines, NOS, Tein Suspension, etc... not airbags & Lambo paint. The cars that are shooting for 'Best of Show' do all the 'bling'. Best of show cars in Ca have about $150K+ in mods, if you want to win a Subie Category about $40K in mods might do it, but I guess it all depends on the import scene in your area. I've had my WRX, with $25K+ in mods, in 6 shows and I have only gotten 1 trophy, so good luck.

lil WRXer 760 02-13-2004 12:02 AM

I like air ride but I think you will get sick of the bounceness (sp?) But I think it would be sweet to have. I agree with most that its not for a WRX but I think it would look sweet. My friend had his Ranger bagged and we did have to change one of his bags a lot cause they popped. But that was out fault because we put the bracket on wrong. But my friend has his Integra on cylinders and he hasnt had a problem with those....so its probably all about what kit you get and who installs it. Overall, it would for sure be a fun thing to have...I just wouldnt have it as my everyday driver. But keep us posted on what you are going to do cause I would like to see it.
PeteDucati 02-13-2004 07:49 AM

January of 2004 issue of Import Tuner had a write up about the Praxis air suspension. www.praxissystems.com is their site.

Two things.. doesn't Tein make an adjustable coilover which can be raised and lowered from inside the car? EDFC or something like that?!?

My trunk release as always giving me problems.. until I install a different wing on my car (Tein wing). Crazy man.. crazy.

Shaving door handles, key holes, etc.. is awesome, good luck. I've also learned I have to pay to get the job done right. It's better to have someone you don't know who has a fantastic reputation do the work than your buddy who's a really good body man. If you tell the bodyshop to make it perfect and they don't, you can always make them do the job over again.. your buddy may not me so willing. And remember, if it's not perfect, it's NOT perfect.
Chris Morgan 02-13-2004 08:56 AM

Milla, Thanks Bro for the offer But I am all the way down in So Flo and shipping would be like buying a new set! I was pondering some 5 zigen 18 inch 5 spokes in Chrome. I am not a chrome wheel guy, but damn I think it may look good. As for the shows guys, it really doesnt matter if I win or not. I love to show off my creativity in my car. If it looks good to me, thats all that really matters. Winning is just an extra for me. Thanks for the positive feedback. I am looking forward to dumpin' my rex. Later this summer Ill see what I can do about the pics!

Milla...I'll see what happens. It won't be until later this summer that I will go out and snoop around for some rims and tires. Im liking the 18's cuz I can drop lower with that size. 19's might be a little big for me...but I will definently keep in touch and let ya know whats goin on.

PD's right...the article was in Import Tuner and before that, Sport Compact Car (the one all the others get their articles from anyway). Praxxis is prolly the best way to go. But do yourself a favor and read the articles first do to some research.

The EDFC made by Tein is designed to remotely change the valving of the shocks (compression and rebound), NOT the height. That would be one crazy set up tho, if it did!

I'm going to be shaving my trunk lock, too...I installed a solenoid and relay to control it from my aftermarket keyless alarm system. Next up are the doors...and not to worry, I'll always have an emergency way in  blowtorch!

Honestly dude, if you go with stock seats wrapped in leather you're not gonna get a lot of points for that at a show. Even though the leather is "custom". People with aftermarket seats will get more points than you will. If you wanna get alot of points for your interior I'd go with:
1. Decent brand of aftermarket seats, or jdm sti seats. Get all four, or cover the rear bench to match your new seats. Also get some decent harnesses
2. Wrap whatever you can find in carbonfiber
3. Neon or Led lights in the footwells
4. Lcd screen in place of the doubledin stocker. I'd stay away from the fold-out units, everyone has em and people aren't impressed with them anymore.
5. Lcd screens mounted in your headrests.
6. Decent stereo equipment. A custom enclosure in your trunk is a must.
7. Wrap all your pillars in either carbonfiber or alcantara suede.
8. Roll-cage. It doesn't have to be trackworthy, even a cusco bolt in cage will do.

That's all I can think of for now. Anyway, builiding a car that will even place at a show is buku bucks.

LOL, dude that's the funniest crap I've ever heard. You're not gonna win a show without ICE. And stock equipment doesn't give you any points at a show, even if it's brembo brakes or Version8 seats in an sti.
BAC5.2 03-02-2004 01:52 PM

I didn't read the whole thread, just skimmed it.

If you do air bags, you'll regret it. Not because of reliability, but because the car will handle like a turd.

When you lower the bags, you lower your CG. But you also decrease spring rate. So now you are super low, with more body roll than a caddy. You'll also likely scrape from heavy braking.

You raise it up, and your spring rate effectively increases but your CG is now 3 feet off the ground.

Airbags + handling = crappy.

If you are only after show, and highway comfort, then go for it. Otherwise, it'd be as foolish as 3" pipes on an N/A car.

Just my opinion though. The Praxxis kit is wicked, and that's the route I'd go.

LOL, dude that's the funniest crap I've ever heard. You're not gonna win a show without ICE. And stock equipment doesn't give you any points at a show, even if it's brembo brakes or Version8 seats in an sti.
I have an LCD... but Like I said.. you dont put LCD's in the back of an STI seat or Recaro...

I am no show car.. I'd rather have mech mods, but I needed the lcd in my din area for HKS CAMP.

Milla. Don't ever post to me again or quote what I said.

Have YYYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUU ever seen a winning wrx?

I have yet to see a WRX or STI with LCD's in sti or show seats. And covering the pillars with suede??

I'm stating my opinion... If you try to flame me this thread will soon turn into another milla flaming session.

Don't u have to go wash your car for F&F 3 or something?
Um yes I have seen a wrx that wins shows. He is a member on this board too david reider.

I am stating my opinion you know nothing about show cars. To win in most shows you have to have like 3 or 4 tv's.
