X-Games Rally pics, vids & discussion thread. part 6

ricochet 08-10-2006 12:22 PM
What a waste...

20 seconds of rally talk, and that was it, no pics or vids or anything.
Props to Travis for getting in plugs for his sponsors, Red Bull (nice hat!) and Subaru, however. Though, yeah, Jay didn't really let him talk about much. I also got the feeling that Rally was a bit of a dead topic to the audience. That or it was just too awkward to get in any more.

Too bad, too, since they had footage for a ride-along with Ken Block during the Super Special Stage, where I hear he smacks the car around pretty good. Probably cut so they could show multiple clips from that goofy Disney show.

Not sure about everyone else in America, but I'd rather see rally car action than see some dude get hit in the head multiple times with baseballs.

TG that's over soon :D
STI_SLC 08-10-2006 04:01 PM

this was a great showing. period... of course all of the cynical heads are gonna come
out of the cracks and dis the finer details..
pastrana? remove all of your opinions and break it down. this kid is good. so much
talent for anything with a throttle.
my boy block came in with a bronze which really stoked me out since he and travis
were the main reasons this was even in xgames. period.
as far as WRC, word around the industry is that he has already been looked at as the first driver from the US to ever compete in WRC. he is only 22 so i really dont
see this as a slim possibility.. i see it as when.
with 33 concussions under his belt from moto (yes 33) there will be a point when
hucking a motocross bike is not going to be very high on his list.
i have already heard reports and interest of making the rally portion of X, twice as big for next year.. personally, i cant wait.
great job for the top 3.. TP, CM, KB!
now when does the amatuer tarmac / canyon carving circuit get organized.......... please?

Travis and Ken have already done recce at the WRC Mexico and rumors are that they will do the same at least one time this year at another event.

Yes - I think it is a matter of when Travis tries the WRC - not if. My guess is the when will be quite soon!

Thanks to all for a GREAT show at the X Games.
ricochet 08-10-2006 05:43 PM

When I asked Pastrana about WRC last fall, he said his intention is to be the best in the world at whatever he does. And in rally, that means winning the WRC. So yes, just a matter of time.

I thought travis lived in maryland?
bjorn240 08-10-2006 09:57 PM

Travis lives in Maryland and owns a ranch in San Antonio. I live in NYC, and will do so for at least the next 3 to 5 years. I've been invited to go visit though. Apparently, there are jetskis, and I've only ridden a jetski once, so that seems a good excuse!

If we get invited to the Gravel Lab, we'll definitely go. That place looks sweet! I live in constant low-level dread that Ken will just use it to get faster and faster, and deny us all access to the Bat Cave! You wouldn't do that to us, would you, Ken? Ken? Hello?

I haven't hinted at anything, I don't think. In 2007, we hope to win the Rally America championship and possibly run some other events, time and budget allowing. As Ken said on Specialstage, twice now, I'm on a need to know basis! :)

ricochet, Thanks for that video. It was quite impressive to see the precision in which he runs that course. The two cars are almost indistinguishable before jump 1 and jump 2, and look like the even land in the same spot. I suppose the first jump may have made a bit of divot. What was the final time difference between those two pieces?

They're aligned with the moment Colin appeared at the top of the ramp. On the second pass he took that first ramp a little faster, flew just a hair higher/longer. He also swung wider prior to the jump (again, barely noticable, probably due to landing lower on the entrance ramp). The slow mo section is 60% regular speed. Someone want to grab a stop watch and figure out the difference between the two runs as he exits the screen?

subaru sponsorship letter - truth?
hi all,
the x games were awesome. thanks for the torrent.

i've been reading the comments about how some teams were limited by budget way more than others at xgames. i'm not sure how sponsorship deals actually work, but here's one version. last year i wrote a letter to subaru complaining about the drop in sponsorship, compared to previous years, for some teams who were at mountain trials 2006, bc. At my peril, here is the reply. i'm a bit new to rally so i'm not sure if it's true, or propaganda...?

*****NB - in the letter i wrote i stated CLEARLY that one of the rally volunteers told me about the sponsorship history and that subaru was no longer interested, even though his reply it was Pat Richard. I just gave Richard's as an example of a team that deserves more support.

here's the email i got back:

Brian Hyland <bhyland Fri, Dec 16, 2005 at 5:18 AM
To: Jennifer
Cc: Reid Thorburn <rthorburn

Jennifer,

Thank you very much for your letter dated December 2, 2005.

Subaru Canada, Inc. entered into Canadian rally in 1991 with Tom and Trish McGeer in a Legacy Turbo. We have had a team fielded in the sport from that time until the end of 2004.

In the late 1990s when Michelin Tire dropped out as the sponsor of the Canadian Rally Championship ( CRC ), Subaru was asked by the Canadian Association of Rallysport ( C.A.R.S. ) to help out the sport by co-sponsoring it along with Yokohama Tire.

Subaru Canada, Inc. has either co-sponsored or was the Title sponsor or funded the CRC from that time until the end of 2004.

In 2001, Subaru Canada, Inc. increased its commitment to the sport by entering a 3 car team into the CRC. The reasons were to both promote our product but also to try to increase the level of spectators, organizers, competitors, sponsors and other vehicle manufacturers.

Spectators went up, the events got better, there were more competitors, Toyota and Suzuki fielded teams during this time but there were no more sponsors. In fact Yokohama dropped out and Subaru was left to sponsor the CRC by itself. Over the period 2001 2004, Subaru Canada, Inc. worked with C.A.R.S to try to find other sponsors to help defray some of our costs that resulted from both sponsoring the CRC and also fielding the Subaru Rally Team Canada. Unfortunately, no other sponsors were found.

It was a very difficult decision to withdraw our sponsorship of the CRC but also to disband the Subaru Rally Team Canada ( S.R.T.C ). We had been together for 4 years as a team but a lot of us had been together since 1991.

The comments that you are attributing to Patrick Richard that Subaru Canada, Inc. had no more advertising advantage to gain from continuing to support the sport are hard to believe. In the end there were many solid business reasons for our decision but we still did not walk away from the sport. We continue to fund a Contingency programme for the competitors, we supply parts and service support for the competitors on site and we continue to work in the background of the sport to help make it better.

Again, thank you for your letter and the passion that you have for the sport. I hope that you will continue to drive Subarus for many more years.

Yours truly,
Brian Hyland

If anyone's interested, there's a nice writeup in the Motorsports section of Autoweek (Aug 14, 2006; Pg 48, 50). Big picture of Travis launching over the stadium jump on the first page, mid-air shot of Ken on the second, and a couple shots of Colin's famous roll as well. Only two pages, but it's no more than they devote to NASCAR or F1. Article quotes Chris Stiepock, GM of ESPN Events, as saying that rally will "definitely" be back next year. Rally America wants a Winter event as well.

Thanks Rallyroo (right-click, save as). I can see myself!

The latest Autoweek (Aug 21, 2006) has a Subaru ad in the motorsports section about rally at the X-Games. The header reads "Turning the X Games into the WRX Games. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru." Under it is a picture of McRae, Pastrana, and Block showing off their medals. I'm in the background of that photo, white t-shirt and sunglasses to the left of McRae's head. I'll try to get a friend to scan it, for those that don't receive the magazine.

This is turning into "Where's Waldo?" for me. Do I get royalties?

There are already enough sue happy people in America. Sure keeps the lawyers happy. Just recently a senior citizen tripped on the sidewalk at the city park. She sued and got $50,000 from the City of LA.

Completely different scenario, Subaru is taking advantage of psg without his permission. Subaru is making money off this ad.
This is not a situation where someone was an idiot and hurt themselves and tried to blame others.

Technically, if he is identifiable in the ad, they needed a model release from him. Sounds like pretty sloppy work by the ad agency.

Of course, I am not necessarily suggesting that you should go after Subaru for this...

psg 08-22-2006 06:48 PM

Isn't there some sort of clause on the ticket that says you consent to being photographed, broadcasted, etc? My face is slightly blurred, but looks like it's more of an effect of the focal length of the lens. I couldn't care in the slightest--it's pretty awesome in my book.
Hey psg you get that scan yet? I wanna see if I made it in the ad too.
No scan yet, but I don't think you or Twizhimself were in the ad. You guys were just left of frame against the wall, while I was to your left, standing on the bleachers.
Mopho 08-22-2006 11:40 PM
Isn't there some sort of clause on the ticket that says you consent to being photographed, broadcasted, etc?
If it was there, I believe it would only apply to ESPN/XGames to use the images, unless otherwise stated.

And I happen to have a ticket here and it basically says (you pretty much need a microscope to read it) you only gave permission for them to use your likeness for any live or recorded video display and or other TV transmission that is part of the event. ;)
