A-stock, will anyone whine if I remove my wing?

Got a STi, has a hitch (~+50lbs), want to possibly remove my wing (~-20lbs?). Autocross is a hobby that I like, but I still want to be able to customize my car by removing the wing. I figure the hitch more than makes up for the weight that will be taken off by removing the wing. I also have JDM fogs and lip which no-one locally has a problem with.
Remove the STi wing?
Will it be a big deal for local auto-crossing in a stock class? Also how much of an impact will it have if I want to go to a more important event?
I am just worried about complaints. How would the issue be resolved if it was brought up. A friend who has competed nationally said that they would put the car on scales, find out it weighs plenty and say too bad to the person complaining? ;)
Sorry for the long post?

Local auto-xers... maybe. Depends on the region. OUt of your region... you might run into a bigger issue.
Rules say you can add a hitch... but the rules don't say you can switch something out becuase you added a hitch. The rules also don't say you can remove a wing, or replace it with a smaller one (unless it was an option, and it's not) So 'by the rules' no, you can't remove it.
How do you 'deal' with it? Don't remove it and there's no issue.

Not likely. It would be illegal. Period. You'd likely be disqualified.
If you want to remove the wing, fine. But put yourself in a class where it's legal to remove the wing. Even at a local level, I have a lot of disgust for competitors who do something they KNOW is illegal, but who refuse to class themselves appropriately.

The deal is that even if your local competition says "OK run without the wing" likely at least one of them will be pissed off but won't tell you about it. Better to simply run STU or ESP where you can modify to your hearts content without worrying about upsetting someone.
That said I don't think anyone would protest at a regional level unless there was a larger points battle at stake.
--Kevin H.
Protests are incredibly rare in my area. 5 years in this sport and I've only seen 1 protest at a regional event. However there is a STRONG self policing culture. Friends don't let friends misclass themselves around here. :)

You can't remove the wing in ESP either. You can add to it but you can remove it. You can make it even bigger!!!

Around here if you are not competing closely with someone for a trophy position or a top 20 PAX position it is not a big deal.
Maybe instead of taking the wing off, you could modify the hitch to be removed, or remove a part of it? Just a thought.

Not being a Street Preparded competitor,I could be wrong about this, but aren't the WRX and the STI on the same line in the classing, which means that you could remove the wing under the update backdate rules?
Of course, in going back to the original post, the driver shouldn't be able to compete in stock class anyway with the addition of the JDM front lip. The fog lights fall into the comfort and convienience rule I believe. You should have to be running ESP or STU depending on the update backdate, and what you decide to do with the wing.

 I am not "trying" to do something illegal. I don't want to do anything but remove the wing because of the attention it gets and the fact it blocks some of my vision. I was just stating that I plan on keeping the hitch so it's not like I am trying to save weight by removing the wing. To me auto-cross is supposed to be about fun. I probably wouldn't argue if another STi in my stock class removed his wing, so I was wondering if others would feel the same way.
Putting my-self into other more "modded" classes will really screw me on PAX because I don't have any "mods" and don't plan on any. I like the reliability of the stock set-up.
Peace,

You can't have it both ways though. You either get screwed on PAX (just doing it for fun anyway, right) or you leave the wing on. That said, poll all your local competitors and see what they'd think. Around here people just run whatever they want and wait until someone comes to talk to them. If you flip that around you'd probably get a bit more respect.

Which is it? As Paul said.. are you out to win or have fun?
Win = Do things by the book and be classed accordingly
Fun = Doesn't matter what class you're in when you have removed the wing. You're still going to have fun.

That's what I think I'll do. I know all the corvette guys I race against and I am sure they won't care. The only STi's I've gone against are my buddies. I was concerned that if I went to a suby-challenge that it would be important. I like the fun but it's also nice to be competitive and I'd get slaughtered in another class. Thanks for all the advice, I must consider. ;)

No they are not considered the same line. I guarantee at a national event you would get protested for switching wings in ESP.

If STU inherits it's rules from STX, which inherit their rules from STS, removal isn't an option either.. Only replacing it with another spoiler is an option.
Either way, locally I don't think anyone would give a rats arse if you take your wing off for autocross. If they do, you better be beating them for them to complain.
In my region there are lots of guys who run in STX with catless WRX's, I don't protest as they are out to have fun like yourself in a class where their car fits in (except for the cat rule) and they are competitive enough that they don't want to go to SM or ESP (nor buy race tires & extra wheels). They are also friends of mine and ask me if I'd protest and I said heck no. It isn't worth my time or money. Of course none of them were beating me, but even still on a local level who cares.
Heck the guy gridded next to me at Nationals was illegal (I/C hoses) but I didn't protest because it wasn't a concern of mine. Had he been beating me I may have, but even still, that one mod shouldn't make him 'whoop up' on me. I was planning to mention it to him as a courtesy, but never got around to it.
If someone locally protests you, put it back on and tell them you're sorry, if not, have fun. That really is what this sport is about, especially on a local level.

you are being illogical.
on the one hand you want to reduce the weight of your car and have it be "OK" because its just about fun.
On the other hand you are unwilling to run in SM where it would be legal. Why would you object if its just about fun? Most local regions SM wont be any faster anyway.

Are you being sarcastic? I think I've stated before that weight is not the issue. I drive my STi as my daily driver and auto-cross it. I am thinking about getting rid of the wing for looks not for performance. My STi has to be at lease 80lbs heavier than a normal STi with the fogs and hitch. I leave all the crap in my glove box etc.. too. So I obviously won't have a weight advantage.
So ......from some responses that I have gotten, people would be upset if I took off my wing. Question answered.

(*sits down with his Margarita)
Classing your car isn't about weight... so why do you keep brining that up? In the rules, you're allowed to HAVE a trailer hitch.... it's written in there. However.. it doesn't say you can take something else off in stock to COMPENSATE for it. So stop brining the fact up that you're heavier than someone that doesn't have a hitch. You chose to have a hitch.. that's your call. You could easily put the tires in the back seat and not have to have a hitch. This is your choice and the rules allow for the hitch. Or... take the hitch off at events.
(*drinks a few more sips of his margarita*)
It's about what's right in the rules. Get a good foundation now, and you won't be surprised when you do well later on and are protested saying "It was cool with the local guys... all you national guys are stuck up jerks." (Yes, I've heard that a bit thanks) Auto-x is about having fun. Competition comes second. The part that is sooooo often missed is it's about EVERYONE having fun in the class you run in, not just YOU. Their fun is decreased when YOUR fun is just to remove the wing against the rules, when they are doing their best to COMPLY with them. Honestly... what makes you so special that the solo rules of your region don't apply to just you?
(*downs another gulp or two of a Margarita*)
So getting back to the point....
Class yourself where you *know* you should be classed (SM) for the removal of the wing... or don't remiove it and play with all the other rules abiding people (AS). This is not just an issue with you, it's an issue with everyone. Someone in your region could buy an STi tomorrow and remove the wing thinking it's legal to do so becuase you did it. Lead by example... don't remove it in stock.
(*finishes Margarita*)
Don't be mad that the rules don't say you can. They're there so it's fair to all competitors in the class.

So, for me to auto-x in g stock w/ my near stock 2.5RS sedan, I would have to put my stock sedan wing on? (I have the 2.5RS coupe wing from the same year.) It's no biggie, because I can toss the stock sedan wing on in no time. But how does that work if the 2 door model is offered with a different wing than the 4 door?

| KC | 10-05-2004 08:49 AM |
Technically... you're supposed to run the same wing. But this is where the 'package conversion' comes in. If you can completely upgrade your car to the same equipment as the 2 door, then you should be able to change the wing. Since they are essentially the same car, just the doors are different and the wings.... then you might be in the clear
I say 'might' becuase what I don't know is if that 'package conversion' means you have to turn the car into a 2 door. :)
E-mail [emailprotected] and ask him about the stock conversion and having a 2 door wing on the 4 door... which is exactly the same car save the wing and doors.

I'm certain an option package conversion can't be applied across body types because the rule essentially requires the car must end up IDENTICAL to the configuration of the desired package car as it was delivered from the factory. The only exception to this is items which may be replaced/removed as per the regular rules of your class.
There's no way you re-option a sedan into a coupe! ("Don't mind the extra doors?").

Yeah, unfortunately it is illegal in AS to not have the wing. As well as some of the other classes. Sucks doesn't it? If I get the STi next year the wing will be one of the first two things I change. It is ugly and messes up my rearview vision. I will still autox when I can, and in my local events it will not matter if it is not there.
I understand what you are saying. Even though it is "just for fun" we all like to win, and not lose. And going to some other class just because of the wing and not having a chance to win is no fun. Unless you are not a competitive person at all, which I never understand. Anyway, see what the local even people say where you race and do what you want to your car. As for me the damn wing is coming off no matter what.

KC's post needs to be bronzed. That's the best explanation I've ever seen of why competitor agreements to ignore parts of the rules are just plain wrong. Bravo KC!
