MISSING FORMULA CULPRIT OF SCORING ISSUES
AT ATLANTA THE TIRE RACK SCCA PROSOLO

TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 25, 2004) An error in timing and scoring software was discovered Tuesday through testing by SCCA Solo Officials after several concerns were discussed at the Atlanta ProSolo, Round One of The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries.

RaceAmerica, the company that provides timing and scoring equipment for all events in The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Program, was asked to improve its software in an effort to alleviate problems that had surfaced in an earlier version of the scoring program. During the reprogramming, a formula used to include reaction times in overall scores was inadvertently omitted for the left side course.

During Saturdays action in Atlanta, several competitors questioned the validity of times shown for the courses and a test was performed in order to determine whether a problem existed or not. The test executed on-site came up inconclusive, prompting officials to believe that the angle of the finish lights, on a sloped hill, was causing an optical illusion.

SCCA officials were not aware of the extent of the problem until after the event was completed.

After a round of software testing by Accurate Technology Inc. (ATI) was completed Tuesday afternoon, the missing formula was determined to be the cause of the scoring issues.

Competitors who were at the event will be given the option of keeping points they earned or deciding to make the ProSolo a non-points event. If they choose to make it a non-points event, entrants will be allowed to start the season over and count the best three events out of the next four toward their season point total.

We apologize for the inconvenience of this issue, Director of Solo and Road Rally Tasha Goodale said. And we feel this is the most fair solution for everyone involved.

Aside from the programming glitch, the ATI scoring system proved to be up for the weather challenge the ProSolo weekend provided. Despite constant rain and chilly temperatures for almost two full days, the display boards and scoring system overall registered scores without fail throughout the event.

The scoring software will be fully operational in time for Round Two of The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries, set for March 13-14 in San Bernadino, Calif., at the Norton Airport.

For questions regarding decisions made, please contact Tasha Goodale at 1-800-770-2055.

I kinda think I know what the answer is going to be... everyone who didn't finish 1st... do-over!
MNbiker 02-25-2004 03:14 PM

This seems like a pretty evenhanded response by the SCCA. Those who drove well are rewarded. Those who feel slighted get a "mulligan". Now if only Tom & KC didn't have to drive 1,500 miles to take their mulligans. Guess I'll be seeing you guys in Peru, after all....

p.s. Now taking bids for the co-driver's spot in my car at Topeka!:D

Hmmm... I guess I'll keep my points... Funny thinig is, I pulled all .5XX lights on Sunday. At least I got some good practice now.

If everyone was subject to the same error, what difference does it make?

Dont all entrants do both left and right courses?

Scott

Yes everyone does the same courses left and right an equal number of times, so it doesn't make much difference. Even in the super challenge you do both courses head to head.

Yes they do, but in ProSolo reaction times are supposed to count. If someone got a a 0.800 reaction time and beat a person by 0.100 that had 0.500 lights, the person with the 0.500 lights would have normally won the event. That wasn't the case here ON THE LEFT SIDE. Apparently the right side was counting.

Even though Mike King is still a bastard ;) he would have beaten me even if the timers on the left side were correct. We had the reaction time discrepency on the RIGHT. He ran like an 0.800 light and I had a low 0.500. That would have made the difference, but apparently those times were counted. On the LEFT side, he had a 0.550 and I had a 0.506 (or 0.509 I don't remember). Either way, that doesn't make up the 0.040 difference, but it does bring it down to 0.004  mike, did I mention youre a bastard?

Now, I wonder if I should start the season over and run DC,Toledo, Oscoda and have Peru as a backup? Or should I just take my 2nd place points

Yes, for those who are hoping for a season championship, that would seem to be mandatory.

For those like me who would just like to qualify for the Finale while doing the minimum amount of travel... I'll keep the 13 points for third place, thank you very much. See you in DC, Toledo, and hopefully Topeka!

I'd just start the season over in ESP if I were you...cuz you ain't gonna win STX no mo! :D Actually I think the WRX will do just fine in ESP...would be fun to beat up on the Camaros and 'Stangs after all the trash they've talked about the STis. Our WRXs are gonna make a much better Pro car than Tour car, I can see that now. We'll see...

Speaking of Subaru $$$... The contingency info came out after the Atlanta PRO, but it says for every event this year... Do we have any chance of colllecting from the Atlanta PRO?

I was going to ask what is required to get the contingency? Did I need Subaru stickers on my car somewhere or is the fact I'm driving one good enough? The scca.org website seems unreachable right now, what were the details of the contingency?

Ok it's back up and answered my questsions. Although I'm not sure about the statement:

"Payouts are presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed drivers per class in the 2004 The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Championship Super Challenge and Ladies Challenge events."

Are they missing a comma so it would then be "ProSolo Championship, Super Challenge, and Ladies Challenge" and would only apply to the year end championship event in Topeka or what?

Phil
I admit, that answer is somewhat vague in its' definition. One could take it as per event or the year end... KC? Tom??
jcroy66 02-28-2004 07:21 AM

That sentence seems a little vague, but the "payout" section seems a little more straightforward:
PAYOUT SCHEDULE
Per Event/Super Challenge& Ladies Challenge
1st $500
2nd $300
3rd $200
Year-end Class Champion $500
Year-end Overall Champion $500
If they only intended to pay out for the Pro championship and the year-end champions, I would think they would say that, instead of "Per Event". So I think they're probably going to pay out for every event and for the year-end champions. That's my interpretation of it, anyway.
jbrennen 02-28-2004 07:15 PM

I received an official letter from the SCCA (Tasha Goodale) today about the Atlanta event.

If you wish to void your Atlanta results, the SCCA provides you with a form to do that -- you need to sign it and return it to them no later than March 24.

(They also indicate that you can opt out by email -- I assume that means you can meet the deadline by email on March 24, but would still have to submit a signed request as confirmation...)

If you do nothing, your Atlanta result will be considered as an official event.
KC 02-28-2004 09:44 PM

I believe I have a co drive, and it's before the deadline. :D

I was running 12k springs in Atlanta and that back left turn on the left course was brutal due to the bumpiness or undulations in the pavement there. I'm also dropping the spring rates a bit, like 8/10.

I saw the video from one of your runs, you were bouncing pretty bad there. My car was bouncing like a pogo stick through the slalom on the left course. And that was still with standard 8/6 springs (not for much longer :D ). The surface didn't really look bad to me, but I guess the water might have been hiding the bumps. ;)

7/14 is kind of extreme. :alien:
stxwrxracer 03-01-2004 03:07 PM

Yup, 14s it was...I actually got the JICs in and I was like...do I put the 5's on there or change to the 750lb springs I have sitting in the corner just for kicks. Well, they work fine on smooth stuff, but when it comes to any kind of uneven pavement, it won't keep up. But I put the 9s on it over the weekend, just because my chiropractor was getting too expensive, and the car just woke up. There is actually some lean in the car that I can work with, rotates great, and it now gives the shocks and swaybar something to work with. When I changed the springs out, I noticed they had only about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of travel that could be used. Pretty wild, since I'm sure that the extra travel was from the big bumps that I hit on the street every day and the turn around in Atlanta:huh: Oh well, we'll see how it goes....

~Mike
Fastech 03-01-2004 03:56 PM

Yeah, wouldn't it be nice to actually have an autox venue that was smooth enough for 14kg springs! :D

I don't think the JIC's can handle much over 10kg with the standard valving anyway. (No matter what those bozos at JIC USA say! ) I have 8kg/10kg Hypercoils installed on my JIC's right now, and it seems just about perfect - although the setup is a little bit scary for icy Winter driving. (especially with some rear toe-out and the rear bar set to full stiff!:D )

-Steve
ChrisDP 03-02-2004 01:29 PM

Mike, something rather amusing... I bounced on the rear end of your car, and thought "this isn't THAT stiff... it still compresses. Kindof a jerky rebound though, does he have enough shock?" Kiko pointed out to me "you are moving the whole car!" Sure enough, I looked and saw that your rear suspension wasn't flexing... it was your tires going BOING! with each compression. Eesh. So now you say it's even better? great... just great. :)
